  1. The kitchen starts with large beakers (three, one in each of the grinders), the garden starts with one in their grinder, and, to my knowledge, Xenobotany starts with one in their grinder as well and actually has a direct line to people that can print off extra with no trouble.

A grinder can hold ten items for grinding at a time. I've not really run into an issue with that, even grinding a lot of things--everything gets done at different times, so I just make the trips while waiting for the next batch to grow. Granted, it wouldn't be game-breaking to be able to grind up fifteen instead of ten things, but I've not seen it used to capacity very much. Maybe others have?

  2. This is (or should be) already a thing, as per the Makeshift Chemistry PR:

    Quote

Certain reagents, like any kind of alcohol, space cleaner, sterilizine, honey, and to a very, VERY small extent water, will disinfect wounds when used on rags.

I don't know how powerful it is, though.

  3. What VT says is totally true, but also new, useful tools are always welcome.

Bit niche, but I was thinking a type of tool that gives a much higher chance for strange rocks to give their contents rather than dust (as per a welder). Miners sometimes find them and there's no reason to take them along.

That's. Yeah, that's strange. For some reason, I was thinking there was only the one sink in the backroom. That was inconvenient about a year ago, if I remember correctly.

But since there are in fact two, it probably should've been replaced long ago.

Shovel was meant mainly for digging sand and glass. That is why you can dig buttloads of it in 3x3. Finding resources in sand was meant for Industrial drills. Miner are getting Class E KA instead of pickaxe in Geeves update, so I do not think they will go dig sand for resources are round start now.

So... You're nerfing something you see no one going to do anyway? That doesn't make sense. That sounds like the opposite of balancing. You're pushing something that you see as lesser, even lower, to make the one that's comparatively good, even better. That's just silly, isn't it? If miners can get a little (and I do mean, a little. 6 or less, diamonds usually far fewer. Perhaps two on average.) of each material through digging for a half an hour right now on top of about 500 sheets of glass, I don't see how that's a bad thing. It's not like they're fully supplying the whole station with piles of diamonds. It's glass and a smattering of mats to keep science occupied and get their KA upgrade. … The same as anyone using a Class E KA.

To put things into perspective. You can dig 1 turf safely 10 times (on the 11th time you dig down to the next level). During that dig, you have a high chance (but not a guarantee) of getting a pile of sand and/or a piece of material. Yes, there are legitimately times when you dig a turf and you get nothing. There are times when you dig a turf and get only a piece of coal. Digging multiple turfs at a time offsets that chance because it will usually be a net gain of material. It's mindless work, it's slow work, and if you're fast you can even tab out to switch songs while you're digging and not lose time.

I know you haven't played much mining, so you don't really know how it all relates together, but that's what I'm trying to get across. Shovels are literally innocent here. No one wants to shovel more than necessary. It's not bad to get a couple diamonds over to research before you get your Epic KA. I'm certain scientists appreciate it. It's just a different way of accomplishing the early game hurdle all miners have to go through.

  6. This concept is brought up a lot. It gets tiring. Oftentimes, it's a matter of our economy making no inherent sense. I've seen pizzas charged for 20 credits, I've seen them charged for 120 credits. There's no "I'm getting a good deal!" or "That's a fair price!" feeling when we see the numbers, because they don't mean anything. One shift you can have $100, the next you have $1000. There's a reluctance to pay money when you aren't sure what you're paying money for. You could be giving away a third of your living wage for a pie.

And sometimes, a chef or bartender just doesn't want to. The charging minigame isn't fun to everyone. So it becomes a matter of nice convenience for everyone to chat to each other instead of bringing up the metalephant in the room of our economy making no sense.

  7. Basically what everyone else was saying. Fold the option of being a Karaphact or a Hopeful into the TCFL, let Karaphacts and Hopefuls join up to prove themselves. A third response team just for one species is asking for trouble. It opens the need for there to be Skrell response teams, Tajara response teams... It gets to be too much.

  8. I have concerns. It’s hard to put into words, because it’s only a collection of impressions and opinions over time. Frankly, I don't see you as the most trustworthy or hard-working. More of a come-and-go type. And I may be completely wrong. I don't see behind-the-scenes. But that's what I've mostly gathered over my time observing you.

    Onto the actual essay stuff.

Your definition of asexual makes me tilt my head a little bit, as your essay says that “not asexual” Skrell are still… viewing sex as generally non-sexual, making them just as grey-sexual as the rest, which may just be something a little lost in translation. Your need to define the dating lives of Skrell makes me tilt my head a little more. How Skrell get dates isn’t really something I personally think the lore needs to expand on. I've now, for some reason, become a little concerned about Skrell dating becoming an actual main part of the lore. And for how long are you going to be interested in expanding the lore? We’ve gone through a couple devs recently, for different reasons. It’s been said you aren’t the most active lore deputy in the world.

Sometimes you latch onto a thought and hold onto it regardless of what others might say. This can be for some kind of mechanic or for some piece of lore. Sometimes things can sound like a really good idea to us, but when put before others, there are often holes found and disagreements. Part of being a good leader is to hear all the concerns and dissents and reasonings, understand the consequences better with the new information. Say half the populace likes this new thing, half does not. Is it better to act in favor of a new idea or conservatively? I’m still against Skrellekinesis, for one. And rewriting Skrell history can have… really big, really really big effects. Skrell, more than any other race, is in-tune with their history. Long lives and mental connections will do that. If you shift their history, you shift their present.

Skrell are a hard thing to understand. I’ve been doing it a while now, and my views and opinions have had to change and shift over the time between Loow and now. I still have my faults on interpretation. I only know that every change can have severe repercussions if we aren’t careful. I’m working through the fallout of a recent one even now. I ask for very very light treading.

  9. Sand is worth 1 point each. Sand and shovels are so very innocent. The only time a miner digs sand is at the very beginning of the shift, because going out to dig with a pick was hell on earth and a lot higher risk if you happen to lag or not notice a hole. This change would make it so early game digging was pointless for how long it would take, but raises up later-game digging. No one does later-game digging. At all. Ever. If there's some guy who has been out on the asteroid for two hours digging holes with diamond drills, please direct them to the rocks. The rocks are where you get points and profit. Not the dirt.

At current, digging for a half hour can usually get you enough points to get your gear from the vendor, which is the average for good miners. A half hour of work usually means you get enough to start actually doing your job. This change would make it completely useless to ever use a shovel except if someone asks for glass. Glass would be in the same boat as plastic--never made unless someone requests it (and always given a weird look when someone does), rather than "we always have some extra lying around" as it is now.

To help reduce the bloat, how about we introduce a foreign representative in lieu of governmental reps like PRA, so on.

We would then have the factions themselves, then foreign representatives whose allegiances will be plainly stated in their records.

If we are worried about bloat. maybe just add one or two alt titles like "Consular Officer" and "Representative"  and just have some closets of clothes and McGuffins at the place they spawn at.

This makes a lot of sense and I agree this is a fantastic way to handle it.

  11. If Tajara get their own representative type, it would only make sense for every other race to have one as well. Skrell, Vaurca, and Unathi are obvious, with Dionae possibly tacked on with Skrell interests if that route is one we want to go on. IPCs have their own factions, but I don't know enough to say which one would be best (my first thought is SIM, though). My mind is also jumping to possible Elyran, Dominian, and Eridani (suit, not dreg) representatives.

This is a good chance to open up IAA-type play to a lot more possibilities. I'd say it's fine to give it a trial-run now, but to also keep in mind that representatives will be really Human and Tajara based with an IPC or two. It won't be too far, demographically, from what we already have, except... well, being a Tajara would be easier.

  12. A very overdue change, for sure. Though I do like emergency responders having their own green shade as far as medical is concerned. It helps in picking them out of a crowd (to the point where I think Emergency Physicians should have green labcoats, though they currently spawn with EMT jackets) and distinguishing them from other medical personnel.

I will say that the collar looks a bit like a strange hood. Perhaps a pixel too think? I don't really know. The + symbol looks oddly placed on it. There might also be just a tad too much black in the design, too. I think if you give color to the few pixels below the + on the back, and shorten the front bottom trim down one pixel, it might give a bit more color to it. Or it might just look like shit.

  13. If cargo were not given the grace of it not being illegal, security would be within their right to come in and confiscate anything they'd consider dangerous that they might've seen on the cameras. The same applies whenever research decides to make a gun. If this regulation were to not exist, the jobs of weapons researchers and cargo techs would be severely hampered if security came in demanding they turn over their dangerous items. Not that they should. But they could.

The idea is not to just allow that, that whatever is in the warehouse belongs to NanoTrasen.  Anyone removing items for personal use (not professional use; distributing to workplaces is part of the job and part of the reason this regulation protects the warehouse) is a thief. If the item is considered a part of non-regulation gear, is dangerous, is anything considered an illegal item to possess for your station, then it is contraband.

That being said, it would probably make sense for it to be a theft and contraband charge depending on the item. What I think you should be lobbying for, is a reduction specifically to the severity of non-weapon contraband charges. Things that wouldn't be considered dangerous shouldn't have 15 minutes of brig time, I think. (Though I might say a metal foam grenade might be skirting the line if you consider how fucking terrifying it would be to suddenly be encased in walls, even if they were weak walls. It'd give me nightmares personally.)

  14. I'm okay with these, but like said above, they don't look quite like leather. They look like soft fleece, which is fine, but shouldn't be called leather. They do look like they'd have a hood?

I think the issue is the lack of stiff shiny-ness.

I'd be fine with mute Cargo people, it's a similarly low requirement job and I've seen mute miners do fine - the better ones often establish a signal for "help needed" like blowing into the mic loudly and stuff like that. Many Science roles + Biochemist also aren't really impacted too badly by muteness, though I'd hesitate to say anything outside of those roles would be viable for mute people. Certainly Engineering, Security and actively healing Medical roles all require speech.

Technically, any job can do fine as a mute person if you make signals and use a PDA. But there's a difference between "Urist blows into the mic." and "Urist says, 'Hey, there's a nest of carp DIRECTLY above the mining airlock, so, uh. Watch out, and also come help me.'" It should not be a requirement to know sign language to be able to talk to your coworker safely while EVA (much like checking your phone while walking, it isn't exactly safe to check your PDA while EVA. Funny thing, a miner has actually fallen and died while doing so in the past and it was pretty hilarious, especially since the trauma he got was muteness.) which is why I think EVA jobs should not be mute.

I also believe that mute scientists/roboticists (not xenobios or xenoarchs or plasma researcherbombpeople) could also work, but the more exceptions made, the more difficult the rule becomes to wrangle and remember.

to me these seem like the positions least suited for deaf or mute people.

    do you mean supply?

They're safe in the station and, when they need to talk to people, can PDA without putting themselves or others at risk, because the only people they are communicating with are right in front of them. And that, really, is where the bar is in my mind. You have to be able to do your job to a satisfactory standard AND not put yourself or others in danger. Service covers that, and so does cargo tech so long as they aren't PDAing their miners to distract them.

    Pull ? your ? punches ?

Otherwise use rp to have your character reconsider fighting an alien with sharp talons. It's not their fault if you pick a fight.

Pulling punches causes no damage. There are times when you want to cause damage, but not so much they bleed violently and medical and security lose it. That (correct me if I'm wrong) is the intent of the suggestion.

As for the suggestion: punching, I think, does not make much sense for how clawed they are. As humans will break their thumb if they punch incorrect, Taj and Unathi will slice their palms if they punch incorrectly. Maybe some kind of (not default) backhanded bitchslap would make more sense. Otherwise, yeah, pretty hard to punch if your claws prevent you from doing so.

  17. Alright. So uh. Back in the day, there was a rule put in place where mute characters could not be in fields other than service or civ. It shuffled some characters out of their job, and it has since also forced some characters to not be mute anymore. The Rule was put... somewhere (?) and seems to be forgotten, wherever it is. It was an understanding of people around at the time.

We've gotten new players since then.

There was an argument on the shuttle today in looc about mute miners, of which there are now two, without admin interjection on the topic. Which seems to imply that the Rule, mentioned above, is not so much in effect anymore, because mute miners were among those not allowed (you could be a cargo tech, but not a miner in civ. It was deemed too dangerous).

Basically, is the Rule still in effect, and in what capacity? If it is not, I'd like to know. If it is, can it be put down somewhere for people, new and old, to view? Maybe when you select the Mute disability (though I know it's often better to NOT select the mute disability so you can still do headset emotes), or in the rules proper under Creating Characters? I'd just like some clarity, something to give some kind of confirmed yes or no.

This set an excellent bar for holiday events. The entirely separate map (THANK YOU JOSHIE) was what really set it apart from other events. No obligations to work, with a whole new environment to explore. It was like super extended, and it worked out wonderfully. The additional NPCs were great. The small events like the hotdog eating contest were nice touches. People made their own fun and had a great time. I think this was a fantastic test run for holidays.

I bet the map would have been even better with more advance notice!

Overall, this gets me excited for future holiday events. Well done to everyone who handled it, from map to dev work to npcs to organization.

Basically this. Doxx just pulled the words directly from my brain and put them down for me, so all I need to say is

    "I agree."

  19. I think I like a mix of the blue and the silver tools. Like, some tools look a lot alike (even now), so the color would help. For example, use the silver version of the hemostat and blue version of the bone setter, and the silver version of the cautery and blue version of the scalpel. The bone saw we go with should probably still be powered to fit with the current effects (and sound) it has as a violent tool, so perhaps not the middle version. I'd really love to see them spread out on a surgical table.

The other things do look quite cartoony. Not wholly sold on them. They just look large, I think. Though I like how it shows how "used up" the kits are.

Here. I did something creative for people of Aurora Station on my free time. Please appreciate my work.

I appreciated your work. Then the longer I looked at it, and the more time passed, I appreciated it more. Then I thought, "Free real estate" and added the Beisel flag to see what it looked like. I thought it was pretty neat, but it's your work so it's your call whether this concept should be added to the pool.
