[Accepted] PredatoryInstinct's Command Whitelist Application

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

BYOND key: PredatoryInstinct

Character names: Malcolm Reeves, Hans Hofmann

How long have you been playing on Aurora?:
Daily for roughly two months, perhaps a bit more. Time flies on SS13.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?:
I feel that between the character's IC knowledge, background compounded with my OOC knowledge of the game and systems used in the realm my character inhabits (Security) I would make a good addition to the list and be more able to help other players around me.

Why did you come to Aurora?:
I haven't played SS13 for a good four years, coming back to it Aurora was the first and only server I tried. The folk on around the time I play (Middle of the night, central.) are awesome, IC and OOC.

Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?:
Yes, of course. Before I started the server I spent an hour on the rules, jobs and then a solid three reading lore.

Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they?
I have not received any administrative actions.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about:
I think roleplay is less of more than one thing in the way this question is phrased. To me, roleplay is taking control of a character in a game world, whether it is in an online 3D game, a board game in real life, simply all in imagination with dice to determine actions. Roleplay is taking that character and deciding their actions, reacting to things, all as the character. Essentially, it is to pretend you are someone else via a make-believe character. What it should be about is completely up to the setting, characters, their motivations, and drive. It is difficult to explain what roleplay should be about if it is left open like this, though the closest interpretation I can understand of the question I can answer like this. Roleplay should be about having fun and making sure others have fun. Even through conflict, anger, frustration and so on- but these things should be kept IC.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?:
I believe the purpose of a Head of Staff is to give a slight guiding hand to the motion of things. To bring authority to a department as to not have chaos or self-appointed leaders that end up falling through in one manner or another. It is someone who is able to help people learn the department and should generally at least be familiar with every role in said department. Besides helping their own, they should have the ability to communicate and cooperate with other command staff in order to conduct the station as a whole in the way that it needs to react to resolve emergencies and so on.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?:
Someone who is whitelisted for a command position should generally be knowledgable about their department, the game mechanics and roleplay. It is not even to the extent that a command staff should know about these things, but be willing to help others with them. Throughout roleplay or through other means to teach someone what they need to know to make their stay on SS13 a pleasant one. Nobody likes to be told that they are bad and not told how to correct being bad, or even what they are bad at. But everyone has room to improve.

Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau Ceti and how it affected your character and their career?
Just ten years ago Tau Ceti severed from the Sol Alliance, under heavy influence of NanoTrasen. Since then the mega-corporation has had a heavy helping hand in the wealthy system's way of operations in many aspects, including military and economically. It has been to the point that the Republic of Biesel is almost solely reliant on NanoTrasen on these two fronts in particular. Because they have grown so reliant on NanoTrasen, the area is a hotbed for high paying jobs with an absolute monopoly on the resources of the system. This is what called to Malcolm Reeves for a change in pace from staffing corporate escort ships between Sol and Tau Ceti. What better a place to settle down than a station in an economically and culturally enriched system such as the NSS Aurora.

What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted?
I only plan to play Head of Security to be quite frank. I would need to play more of the other divisions to even think about playing one of their heads.

Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.:
Malcolm Reeves, Head of Security. Makes sense ICly and the character is very well received already.
I have another character I plan to bring in as a Head of Security with a bio and backstory nearly fleshed out.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?:
I would rate myself a strong seven or eight, though I believe everyone has room to improve. I am not excluded from that.

Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action?
I do understand this and would have no issue with it being removed if ruled as such.

Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles?
I have spent a long, long time making myself familiar with the other command roles even though I don't intend on playing them in order to know how they will be interacting with the role I do intend on playing.

Extra notes: None I can think of, thanks for reading.

Probably the easiest +1 of my life. I play security most of the time, and most Wardens that play the role are laughed at when they try to help coordinate officers, and rightfully so, as most Wardens don't know what they're doing. Not to name any names or throw people under the bus, but recently a Warden asked an HoS if they could distribute less-then-lethals to the sec department because the Tesla had gotten loose. That aside, when Reeves attempts to coordinate officers when there's a lack of HoS, people listen, because both he and the player playing him know what they are doing. Not only is he great at keeping security organized in the absence of a Commanding Officer (I've played with him enough on low-pop to know this), he doesn't immediately go valid hunt mode the second an antag is spotted. He often will go out of his way to LOGICALLY give the antag a chance, for RP sake, while not screwing over his entire department in the process. I've seen him involved in a number of hostile stand offs just due to their being barely any security on shift in the first place, and every time he puts RP before combat until he has no other choice but to start fighting. All of this, and I haven't even mentioned his ability to RP, which is top notch and then some. He's not one of those Wardens who will spend their entire shift at the kitchen or the bar talking to whoever, he manages to perfectly balance doing his job and RPing with whoever. It's without a doubt in my mind a good idea to give this man HoS, I guarantee it'll only benefit the security department, and the server, as a whole.

+1. Reeves is a solid character with a great background and would make a great addition to command. He places roleplay before gameplay, and in my opinion that's more than a good thing. Pred knows how to roleplay, past that, and is truly great at assessing a situation and taking charge. While I don't play security, I have seen him in action and acting as an interim HoS. He is more than capable of taking on a command role, and with his talent for roleplay he is capable of setting a great example for anyone around him.

+1. The times I've interacted with Reeves, he's demonstrated to both be capable to deal with risks to the crew in any situation and to provide interesting RP for everyone involved. While most of my interactions with security have either been getting brigged or dealing with an antag I can say that if I had to point at anyone to disprove the stereotype of validhunting sec, Reeves would be one of my first choices.

While a man with few characters, I'd normally expect people going for whitelists to have at least a few more than 2, but I'd say at the very least that Malcolm Reeves is a solid character, and that I could see PredatoryInstincts playing a head of security at the least. From what I've gleaned from his personality OOC, it seems that he puts a good number of thoughts and premonitions into how Reeves reacts to each situation. While not always translated the best into writing, he makes a character that you can get to know, and even associate with if you have the right background. +1

+1.

While I've only had a small amount of roleplay with Reeves, what little experience I have had was exceptional. Very high quality /me actions from this player the entire time. I would be quite happy to see this player as HOS.

1+

Decent dude. Has always roleplayed very lengthy with good emotes and for me, I automatically have respect for. I've seen him rp emotion like fear and stress and it'd be nice to see some one who puts that much effort into their rp as I do. Most HOS' I see show little to no emotion and they are like stone cold machines except for a very select few. I'd be interested to see some one who plays a character that feels real in a command position like HOS.

I'm not very good at writing supporting text and I don't think I'm well known enough that my word carries much weight, but Reeves is a solid character with good roleplay, and a firm understanding of the strategies I think that Security SHOULD employ. Reasonable force / tactics / communication. Doesn't just bark at people and AFK until the fighting breaks out. All in all, +1 would make a great HoS.

After playing a decent amount of rounds with Predatory's HoS', I can say I firmly stand behind my original post. He has done a great job in even the most high stress rounds, and is easily a model HoS that other aspiring Commanders (and plenty of existing ones) should look to on how to be a good HoS. Even in a role like Commanding Officer they still take the time to RP and contribute positively to each round, regardless of antag involvement, but especially when antags are involved. He gives them more then a fair chance and plenty of RP opportunity (whether they take it or otherwise) before ordering a hostile response if they continue to prove to be a threat. He's a great fit for the position.
