[Accepted] MissNatcula's Command Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND key: MissNatcula
Character names: Lin Dyslioth

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Over a year. Hard to pin point exact time.
Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I think I've demonstrated I'm plenty capable as playing a main warden and through my own characters story progression I think its coming to the time she moves up in her career. I love helping cadets and training them everything about the servers warrant systems, proper ways to approach suspects and also promote rp through it while also training them how to play. I don't see a lot of other people doing this and I know if I make HOS I can train officers to be better as well. I already have so many neat little training exercises to do. I feel like a lot of people already look up to my character for leadership when stuff happens. I know they don't need to listen to me as warden but usually there is no active HOS in my time zone and often I end up helping keep every one together.
Why did you come to Aurora?: I originally came to Aurora when Bay announced they would be moving to their new map. I didn't feel like the huge change in rp; from the original format of ss13, so tried out Aurora and fell in love.
Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yes
Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they? I got a warning for being a bit salty on a cult round. Had nothing to do with playing my job and more on being forced antag.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying is taking the role of some one fictional that you designed and playing out their actions to tell a story. Interacting is done by acting out what your character would do as if writing a book or story. Your character can be as far or close to who you really are however in the end you are playing a character in a otherwise fictional setting opposed to just playing a game where everything you do is what you personally would do and not what a character would do.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: The purpose of any command position is to be a leader figure and create a bond/team with your department. You are in charge of ensuring people correctly follow what your department stands for; Director ensuring research gets done, CMO making sure malpractice isn't happening and so forth. I'd like to also think that command staff set an example both in and out of character as new players no doubt will have interaction with command and its good to have people in the position that are willing to help as I feel, they should have a good grasp on the server standards and rules at the point they are whitelisted.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: I think that whitelisted people; as said before, are there to set an example and uphold the standards required of them. I expect to see players with whitelists demonstrate good rp, follow the rules and in general play on a high standard that others hope to achieve themselves. I also think command and other whitelisted roles are there to look out and help those new not turning away new players so easily as others in the department might. We all were new once and when some one looks unsure of what they are doing its always great to approach them friendly in looc and help them out instead of just ahelping them when they inevitably make a mistake left unattended. I've personally helped a lot of new people learn the basic gameplay through teaching them as a cadet both providing IC interaction and looc guidance if they don't understand how a mechanic works.

Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau ceti and how it affected your character and their career? Lin is not a political big head or really into the news. She watches what is broadcaster on the networks and is highly susceptible to false information due to her lack of drive to commit herself to researching deeper into news outside of basic outlets.

Being some one from Sol and only living in Tau Ceti for about nine years and originally came for school at first the introduction of the new species of Unathi was a bit shocking. To her xeno interaction in general was a bit of a culture shock considering her origin lacked the sight of them for the most part and she only saw them second hand through media. She herself is against the use of cybernetics unless they are needed; such as losing an arm or leg through accident and organic regrowth and cloning is not an option, so when the Aut'Akh first were introduced as a new faction of Unathi she was rather disturbed a person would go through such a procedure willing for how she sees it, religious reasons. Outside of interaction with new species Lin's stand with current events have been quite neutral. Changes in xeno activity have been the main impacts she has noticed greatly yet still leaves herself out of due to a lack of understanding of them.

So this all doesn't particularly effect her since she lacks a huge understanding of culture ways to begin with regarding Unathi. The rare time she deals with them in the brig she treats them as any other which often leads her to learning new things about them; such as Aut'Akh can hide tools inside themselves and cell arrangements need to be chosen carefully.

Since Nanotrasen has given mass internships to these Unathi Lin has just learned to accept and work with them with little resistance from her part. Since she had began working for the company and is rather devoted to their cause she sees no reason to go out of her way in resisting them.

What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted? Mostly HOS for progressing my one and only characters career path. PERHAPS I may play other roles; excluding CE since engineering is the only department I don't know how to play mechanically at all. I have no plans to make other command based characters at the moment.

Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.: Well I only have one character, Lin Dyslioth and currently she is a security main and will fittingly progress to head of security.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I rate myself on the high side. I love to sprinkle in realism in my roleplay. Such as despite my character not being in pain crit I'll often use the rest verb to express pain, shock and fear. I play fair and give antags chances to speak and rp instead of being some one who rushes them mechanically. I also treat the station in a realistic manner where my character is against immediately pulling out lethals from the armory as realistically the station would not actually be under constant threat of traitors, wizards, weird creatures and malfunctioning AI's. I very highly deny AI malfunctions till its very obvious, I act unknowing of traitor PDA pages and have it investigated, I strive to keep unknown life forms alive for research study as I feel a lot of people just jump to killing them opposed to enacting new contact protocol. When I see a vamp on top of some one on the camera I don't instantly jump on the radio saying some one is being attacked, and more of them doing something 'questionable' or 'inappropriate'. I like to give antags a chance especially if I find them very early in the round and play naive often. My character doesn't expect to get jumped, and is roleplayed as such.

I strive to play within my characters knowledge. An example would be when robotics makes a really bad ass looking mech; that I totally want to pilot, but since I've decided Lin would not be trained in piloting mechs I stick to this and roleplay needing to be told basic controls and so forth. Some people find this trait annoying and expect other characters to know everything in their department but I stick to my restrictions rather stubbornly. I find having flaws and restriction to your own department realistic. No one person can completely and masterfully do everything. Especially considering her age. I think this should also apply to all command. Every one has something they don't know or understand and thats completely fine. It gives some one else the chance to fill that spot. After all a department is suppose to be like a team. Every one has their specialisations.

I also highly enjoy rping emotions. A lot of people I find are quite flat. I like to rp shock after experiencing heavily traumatic experiences. If my character is dealing with personal issues she may stray from her daily routine and in whole making her appear real. A lot of people disagree with this and don't like when my character drops her job and breaks down in tears after watching all of sec get wiped out by mercs but how can you say thats not what would really happen? We are playing people, not robots. A show of emotion really makes a scene more believable. I'm here to entertain some ghosts with A grade acting with spots of badassery when the time calls for it.

I hope to bring all this to HOS as quite frankly, HOS' I see currently act like stone cold, security machines. Its impossible to get to know them and what kind of boss is that?

Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action? I understand this completely.

Have you familiarize yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles? Yes.

+1 Lin Dyslioth is my favourite Warden. If she was to step up from being warden, to being the HoS, maybe security would be a better department. Either way, I'd love to see her as HoS. Perhaps captain? Have you considered running the station MissNatcula?

+1 Playing with Natcula's character Lin is a blast, sometimes I spend more time in the brig as an officer role-playing with Lin than I do outside patroling, Lin is a very approachable character and is always a great character, doesn't jump on the valid-bandwagon until we know for sure that we need the weaponry, and will always try to roleplay it correctly and TALK to the antags first, before saying "Ok, they're armed, and they already shot at us. killemall" A lot of HoSs I've seen will automaticly see say, red suits and just go "red alert, grab lethals, we're going in hard" Having Lin as a HoS would be a huge and nice change of pace.

+1, I think natcula would be perfect for a command whitelist.

Big +1 from me, Lin is my favorite warden and interacting with her is honestly the best. I've been on both sides of my characters hating her and my characters loving her. Nat is amazing at RP'ing her character well and seeing Lin in a HoS position will be both terrifying and amazing.

I'm gonna give this a +1, I've known Natcula for a fair bit of time, and they are very well off in terms of RP and is a very kind person at that, who understands and learns quickly.

You got +1 from me

Lin is actually a really good security character and I have such good interactions with them when I am antag.

I am automatically going to give a +1 because she does roleplay with passion that I do not see in other players. Given that she shows that drive no matter what happens to her character.

Cloning her has always been traumatic and amazing.

+1 I don't even look at many applications, but this one gets my Plus.

Why?

The character ICly is up for the promotion. I know some about Lin to realize she's ready for it, and it's a REALLY good fit for HoS.

The PLAYER is a great RPer and someone I'd like to see in Command.

auto +1 from me, Lin is one of the sec players who is just about always fun and interesting to interact with, especially as an antag which really says something. I honestly can't list or think of any bad experiences I've had with this player, and I've never seen them have problems with others either.

-1 While I agree with the PLAYER behind the character getting the whitelist, I disagree with their choice of character.

We're talking about a character with a severe medical record of depression and anxiety throughout all her life being promoted to one of the most stressful, burdening, taxing, mind-breaking roles on the station. It makes little to no sense at all, and a lot about the character would have to be discarded in order for it to work.

Get the role, then play a new character in it.

+1 From me, good char. They always did great antag related rp and leave chances for interaction instead of a shootout.

I for one feel the warden that willingly shared photos of herself in a bikini around the office and spent a round wearing a ball gag everywhere would make for good head of security roleplay.

I could shit post about equally bad/worse characters that exist right now in command positions but I'm gonna keep it classy. I'm not even going to post my defence. If admins want to question me they can do so and then I'll post about the criticism stated above.

For now, thanks for the support so far guys.

The existence of worse characters does not make actions valid. It is the right and conscientious thing to do to address this; either defending it or indicating that this behavior was out-of-line and you don't intend to repeat it.

I don't want to drag anything that's IC into this, because I firmly believe that Incident Reports are and should remain entirely in-character, and even someone who's violated no Out-Of-Character statutes and perhaps even played in an exemplary manner should potentially face repercussions at the hands of CCIA when it would be story appropriate. That said, that does not mean that the two can never overlap: I believe that what I have seen of your playstyle has contained both significant pros and significant cons, that I want to address.

First, on the pros, I have a couple of logs (particuarly from mid last-year) where I praise certain lines in private messages. My favorite one is this:

Quote

Lin Dyslioth says, "You are pretty much free to order whatever and then you pay with your own money."
Lin Dyslioth says, "If its work related you give the ticket over at Odin and get the money back."

Which addresses the existence of a wider world beyond the Aurora. I like this kind of unnecessary but ultimately positive addition to standard play. These exist in a couple of way, shapes, and forms, and I regret that I did not catalog them all when I saw them, because that will make them seem to waver in comparison to the rest of my feedback, which is not the case at all. These have very much endeared me to your character when I have seen them performed, and have helped to immerse me in the Aurora Universe.

I also like how you answer several of the questions; "I like to give antags a chance especially if I find them very early in the round and play naive often. My character doesn't expect to get jumped, and is roleplayed as such", "I like to rp shock after experiencing heavily traumatic experiences. If my character is dealing with personal issues she may stray from her daily routine and in whole making her appear real. A lot of people disagree with this and don't like when my character drops her job and breaks down in tears after watching all of sec get wiped out by mercs but how can you say that's not what would really happen?". These are two stellar answers, and a lot of what you write mimics this sentiment.

However, I do have my grievances as well. To preface, I do not believe I allow my characters' emotions to cloud my OOC judgment, so I feel somewhat comfortable making comments on actions which are in the process of being resolved ICly.

Quote

Georgene Harris says, "This man says he was threatened with a shotgun."
Lin Dyslioth asks, "By who?"
Drew Ashby folds his arms tightly to his chest, "Don't know his fucking name."
Lin Dyslioth says, "Then can't help you."
Drew Ashby asks, "What?"

Quote

Drew Ashby says, "At the brig? So he's fuckin' arrested? So get someone who's not on their period down here."
Lin Dyslioth shouts, "EXCUSE ME?!"

The issue I hold with the above is not my IC inconvenience but the fact that a man threatening someone with a shotgun was less important to your character than being told that she was on her period. I do not believe this to be believable play. For that matter, I do not believe that refusing to arrest act on a gun-wielding assailant because my character was unable to provide a name is all that believable either, but I'm trying to be careful not to focus on my character or their emotions here.

I have seen second-hand similar misplacing of priorities ICly, but I do not have the logs to back that up.

Ultimately, -1. I believe that unless there is some reason that this is not representative of your overall play, that I cannot support your application, although I believe that is a temporary disavowal rather than an indefinite one. You clearly have the capacity to be a Head of Staff, but I think you should consider more intricately how these emotions your character feels interact with the wider world.

+1 for the following reasons:

IC: She is consistently working with the laws and procedures to generate the RP that is sometimes required that even an Antag lacks. She is more then willing to admit her flaws, and does what she can to overcome them. Her IC issues are worked on ICly with others that does not effect her ability to be commanding when need be.

OOC: She is a fun person to talk to and helpful in times when ia question needs asked and should be known ICly but is otherwise lacking. The knowledge of the game makes the multiple characters more believable then otherwise would be in some instances.

The only problem I see here is that you want to make Lin a Head of Staff. I can understand why you want to do this, but please, consider her mental state, you know it better than anyone of us. You made it very clear that she has mental health problems and that is fine. I like Lin very much. Really. But think for yourself if such a person should and could be trusted with being the Commanding Officer of a security force. I guess you have to pass several psychological tests and mental screenings - I doubt she would pass them all to a satisfying standard, which again, is fine.

You get a +1 from me, but only if you make another character for the command role, as hard as it might be. :)

I'm not Natcula ovbiously, but you did leave out some context. EG:

Georgene Harris says, "This man says he was threatened with a shotgun."
Lin Dyslioth asks, "By who?"
Drew Ashby folds his arms tightly to his chest, "Don't know his fucking name."
Lin Dyslioth says, "Then can't help you."
Drew Ashby asks, "What?"

Ok, so you have that right there. What happened afterwards? Did she follow up? What was the context before hand? Were you aware if anything else was happening behind the scenes that you didn't know?

Lin couldn't help you, because she didn't have a name. After, did you tell her what they looked like? What was there job? You can't make a warrent unless you know there name. Perhaps if you add a little more context it'll mean a lot more.

I did say I was not going to comment in defense but I think I am now on a particular topic because obviously there is some misinformation/assuming on my characters mental status.

I see that people seem to think Lin has mental issues. If you read her medical records; which every would have so idk why people are acting like NO ONE in the middle of hostile space in this universes day an age would not have one, she suffers from DEPRESSION. Her 'anxiety' came from school if you read her records correctly. Thus, since she is no longer in school anymore; obviously, she only suffers from depression due to backstory reasons. Which is treated by her prescription. With combination of therapy; which is filled by a player on station because there is therapist/psychologist position.

Her 'suicidal' and 'mental break downs' come from antag rounds. Which are not canon. When she does once and awhile show signs of her depression from lack of regular meds being taken or not having gotten to talk to some one for a long time they are mild. She is not as talkative, withdraw, but in the end she does her job. If you knew anything about my character you'd also know she is fiercely dedicated to NT and the law as well and no matter her 'mental state' she upholds it. Would you as a company literally dismiss a possible HOS that devoted to your company just because they have depression? There is only one, ONE round I can recall that she was heavily depressed on an extended round and she BARELY interacted with anyone so unless you were a ghost floating around its hard to see how you have painted my character in a light of 'mentally unstable suicidal whack job'.

Also Aurora is not a military base. People seem to treat it as such. I'm not going to go into detail of some of the outrageous command personal I've seen over the time I've played on this server but Lin having depression is certainly not something that just would strike her from ever getting promoted to HOS. She has been interm HOS several times and people have had no issues with her nor did her depression or any other mental status effect her ability to lead/command.

But oh no~, depression and mild showings of it is completely off the table and my character is totally and utterly unable to pass whatever command training but all these other people some how got through. They would for some reason hire extremely temperamental Untati, racist Tajara, tyrant humans, totally uncooperative folk and self experimenting skrells before some one with a minor mental condition.

You got be kidding me. Have you seen some of the other characters in command over the time I've played here? Now this is a issue I feel belongs in discussion somewhere else on the forums, not my command app.

Now Ornias I'd like to say, you should post the whole scene because you are being highly deceptive in what really happened between your character and Lin. Proven by your cropping to only show Lin in a bad light. You didn't remember any details of what they looked like, their name, nothing about the person that aimed a gun at you other then VERY generic details. Lin asked your character to come with her into the bar to point out the proper man because there was two people behind the bar bartending and SEVERAL people all scattered around the bar that could be any of the people who aimed a shot gun at your character and you refused and pretty much acted nutters that the guy was going to kill you despite an officer was OFFERING to protect you and go with you to PROPERLY arrest the RIGHT suspect and also talk about the situation. Then you said you wanted a officer not on their period after fighting with Lin and refusing to comply at all in her investigation attempts to help your character. This was also after another officer; who was a cadet, before Lin even showed up ALSO tried to assist you if I remember correctly and we were talking on security about you before Lin was even introduced to the situation. But yes, thanks for the worry that my character was more concerned she was insulted then his safety after she literally offered to hand hold him and arrest his offender IF only he complied and pointed out the correct suspect.

Woah there - relax. I can only say what I seen and experienced with her. I do not - or very rarely play security, so I never experienced the spicy inner-department memes some people brought up. I am just trying to tell you why I think that a new character besides Lin would maybe be appropiate to make for the command position. It was neither critique nor did I even bring up anything specific.

Also, to your "[The] Aurora is not a military base.", this is absolutely correct, yet handling firearms and enforcing law still requires a very strict mental screening. At least its like that in my country. Same with the military, but again, we are not the military. We are basically police, and being a police officer requires (again, I can only speak for my own country) strict physical and mental capabilities.

I still give you a +1, just think about what I said and don't take it as an assault.

+1

I fully support this application, considering Lin Dyslioth for promotion and all. Having played many rounds as her Head of Security and even just watching sometimes as other roles or ghosting, I believe she has the IC and OOC fortitude to brave the role that she is applying for. I guess my only disappointment will be less roleplay with her, since I am a Head of Security main, hah! But really, that is a good gripe to have. Miss Natcula has been a long time RP partner of mine and the main reason I came to the Aurora. Over the years she has demonstrated respect for and willingness to uphold what RP really means and is. It is not just the Aurora for her or her characters, it is the entire galaxy that has effect on the character's mind. From small things like returning a ticket for reimbursement at Odin and the like. I see nobody really RP things that can or would occur outside of the station between myself, her, and such a small number of people I could count it on one hand.

In short, with absolute certainty, I believe that Miss Natcula as a player and Lin Dyslioth as a character have the skills and knowledge required to be a Head of Security. I'd be happy to make an officer under Lin's command, unlike all but two other HoS characters I can think of off the top of my head.

And as a secondary note to the banter going on in this thread, y'all really think that even my characters as HoS are completely blank slates with no physical, mental or emotional issues? Yes, they deal with situations quickly, efficiently and provide doors for antagonists to RP with, but they have their fair share of being human, just like Lin does. It is the difference between roleplaying a flat character that is just sort of along for the ride with small bursts of character here and there, but that ultimately fizzle out, and roleplaying a character that is nearly indistinguishable from a human person. I guess I'll toss my two cents in as someone who values roleplay and say that the ladder is where you should be aiming, and if it is not then we can simply look at it from a perspective of which is a greater concern- winning and gameplay, or story-building and roleplay. Pick and be honest with yourself which it is, because I know where both I and Miss Natcula line up.

With the behavior shown by the applicant here, a strong -1, actually. I don't think someone with a mindset of "oh there were way worse things so let me do this bad thing" would be a good command player.

I think she was just trying to point out to people why it shouldn't matter if some characters have a few issues... I think at least.

+1 from me, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Lin in an interim command position, but I have seen her take charge of the ISD on occasion, and done so skillfully in terms of RP and leadership.

@VTCobaltblood Not saying that at all but ok. Your opinion. I'm pointing out a clear hypocritical issue of people crapping on some people but not others who do worse. Again, belongs in another forum as a discussion.
