Add swords and other things to Mechsmithing

Recommended Posts

Heeey

So uh, apparently there's been a few ideas to add for mechsmithing, but I thought I'd just create a thread for things that I think would make it cooler/ what ideas would be nice for it.

So far, I have three main ideas.

1. Mech swords/shields/melee.
The use of a sword is outdated somewhat because bullets and guns are just that more efficient, but when the sword is as large as a person, and is being swung on a hydraulic arm nearing the speed of sound it just makes sense to have it. Additionally it would go great with the tread base for a mech, because those seem to be designed for charging.

2. KA Holder-slot

Miners like to use KAs, just add weapon for holding and firing KAs.

3. Buffer-Treads/cleaning tools

Basically, a set of legs and equipment if you want to make a mech for the janitor. A rare thing I know due to material costs but hear me out, the Janitor could move at a relatively good speed and clean the floor as they go.

Anywho I wasn't really sure who to talk to about this, so I thought I'd just blurt out my somewhat crazy but nice ideas that I think are sorta cool here.

What else could mechs do with?

>mech with a sword

Ronin was the worst Titan change my mind.

This is pretty dope, how about some scanner arrays? For materials, for thermal vision, idk Bluespace shit even? That's what comes to my mind.

A massive esword to slice through doors? Sign me up.

Not seeing the combat use so much, except on a light mech with a leap function ^^ but that doesn't really fit the heavy stuff robotics usually builds.

I'd love a shield though... Mechs should have frontal protection * 10 so you have to do the magic teamwork thingy to take them down.

I'd go with a "No" for swords and shields. Lemme explain why.

As far my view on popular mech culture is concerned, there are roughly two main interpretations of mechs in media. The ones which I consider "believable", the best examples of which can be found in the Battletech universe (yes, I am aware that there's also a lot of crud in the BTech universe, but the core mech designs are good and relatively practical):

And then the other is animoo style mechs:

I would personally see our mechs erring on the former side, which would mean that swords and shields are too impractical for them. Simply because they lack the articulation required. Prefer guns and missiles instead.

The Ronin from Titanfall 2 WAS cool but it was objectively the worst Titan in the game balance-wise.

I don't necessarily think it's "unbelievable" either that certain factions would fix mech-sized swords onto mechs, but I do not think it should be produceable from NanoTrasen fabricators as their combat doctrine is far different than that of what the Hegemony might do for combat mechs. If combat mechs are even considered inoffensive technology to use in the Hegemony for that matter.

Mech Shields would be interesting but I think it should be energy-based or bust, really.

Really pointless when mechs already do a lot of unarmed damage and can break doors and etc.

I truly don't believe our mechs would be anywhere near capable of that, nor do I believe any faction in the lore would have mechs with that sort of speed and (as Skull mentioned) articulation.

Excuse me Skull but there is a middle ground:

Well if swords are unrealistic, maybe add some kind of leg-shield that can deploy infront of the mech so it rams into people. I'm just saying cause right now we've got two pairs of legs that work for two different things, the treads make a mech turn slow, but move fast, and the quadrolegs make a mech turn fast, but move relatively slow. So one pair of legs is good for ranged combat, and the other is good for charging and melee combat that we do not have.

See, I think the issue I'm seeing here as that I don't view the mechs we have the same as either of those two views that Skull presented. I see them as smaller and significantly clunkier.

This guy being a good example, just gotta close off the cockpit.

My only issue with this bad boi is the ammount of articulation it has. To me, the amount of crontol input you would have to access for 3 actuators that rotate and bend separately as well as 5 human-like digits would be insane. And that's just one arm, now do another arm and two legs, plus possible torso twist. And if you think some sort of glove like control system works, it only does until you have to flip a manual switch or press a button in the cockpit, then you're risking hitting crew nearby or dragging the mech's knuckles on the walls or ceiling. When I said clunky, I meant clunky.

Some man want's to add a robot sword and now you guys are having a discussion about robotics while science casually breaks the laws of physics and chemistry is just a mixing game.
I'm gonna take Alb's position here and say that swords are really not needed due to how mechs are right now. Their melee attacks are not only extremely potent but can knock back targets, making it incredibly annoying to fight against a mech when you have a stick with a knife added on the end. A valid middle point would be to nerf the mech meele attack and transfer the lost damage over to some melee weapon of some kind.

Janitorial stuff would be.. never needed. While cool yes it's honestly one of those things that just get's ignored after everyone had their 3-4 rounds of fun with it after it was merged. Also mechs with KA's would be fine, not super up to date regarding what new way miners found to absolutely abuse the system and if that can even involve mechs but I see no problem with that.

Btw anime mechs are for weebs and I like my big clunky death walkers with more missiles and weapons strapped onto them than one single man could ever want.

I think Mechs should still be powerful in melee. if your trying to fight a mech with a spear, getting your face slapped off by a huge metal death machine is the logical course of events. but on dedicated melee weapons. I do have to agree swords are probably not a good fit. a shield maybe could work in tandem with ranged weapons.

A mech with powerful melee and speed will obliterate anything around it.

A mech without speed and melee will get kited.

A melee focused mech should have the same mechanics as unathi do. A modest base speed with a burst sprint and a temporary speed loss.

The Mech needs to be able to close the distance, and if the mech stays in melee range it would be devastating. But if you are able to counter that rush then you can keep kiting it.

Swords and shields would be sick if you do the above.

I imagine it's lost on people that the farthest Robotics can construct are exosuits designed for Security/Asset Protection purposes. Not Kaiju-slaying war machines or Metal Gears.

I imagine feasible designs for metal-gears and Kaiju-Slaying war machines exist though, At the VERY least, there are probably mechs being produced to match the size and strength of Vaurca war-forms.

A kaiju slaying war machine would just be far too big to make in game, sadly. Although canonically I would wager that Purpose probably has built super-mechs but just have no use for them... yet.

The only melee equipment they should/could have is shields, honestly. Let a mech be a mobile wall if required. We don't need melee weapons for mechs and as stated, their current melee ability is strong enough. Also, regarding the whole idea of melee mechs, they're a absolute meme. There's no need for any of them in our lore outside of maybe mech fighting shows.

I imagine neither would fit in a station hallway, or be produced by a commercial-grade robotics fabricator that's roughly the size of a stationbound. It's already a bad meme that Tajaran tanks can fit in the hallways.

This is called "shooting it with missiles and cardox"

Mechs are implausible at melee, you do not want people getting anywhere close to the cockpit or to damage your legs. They would really just be walking missile racks, like the old Durand.

The 40k Universe has some.. inspirations... for any melee weapons.

Yeah, I'd rather see our mechs look more like BIG ASS FUCKING TANKS than just...big machine people with a smaller person inside.

Mechs are equipment, and should look that way. Hell, I'd love having like just a key or something as ignition. Imagine how badass starting up your fucking mech would be,

sliding the key into the ignition while the machine whirrs to life, euphoria only experienced by mostly German crane operators

I'd like to golly and gawk all day, but honestly, if push comes to shove leave the crazy-ass swords to the antags.

...wait, what am I talking about?

WAAGH! PAINT IT YELLA! IT'Z DA BOOMIEST KOLOR! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
