Remove wizard from the secret rotation

Every single wizard round I experienced is like a round that's had a SPELL cast on it. It negates the server's atmosphere and roleplay quality. It's like a server debuff. Just get rid of it. The gamemode sucks. It feels out of place. Etc. Etc.

 

Someone will inevitably cry "IMPROVE NOT REMOVE". Fine, I'll present an alternative that keeps the general vibe of wizard without it being a blatant meme gamemode, where gandalf the blue shows up and casts magic missile. Polaris has an HRP-friendly version of wizard, called technomancer, which is not only better suited to our atmosphere, but also a far more interesting and engaging antagonist. https://wiki.ss13polaris.com/index.php?title=Technomancer

I am on edge for this decision. I enjoy the idea of altering the role to be more HRP friendly, but due to our expectations, the wizard can be corrected with an ahelp if they fall out of line into LRP category.

Like Ninja, I want there to be two wizards to balance Ninja/Wizard roundtype. That is another topic.

If we can get technomancers into play, that would be cool but I have a fear that security would strip them of their belongings as soon as they get their hands on them, so I dislike the limitation of the cores.

Again, I am on edge for this.

There is a built-in failsafe to prevent coretheft when it comes to technomancers. First, I think they can be locked on- second, if they're taken off, they rapidly destabilize and start killing anyone who touches it and isn't a technomancer.

You called it. Here I go. IMPROVE DON'T REMOVE. Or, in this case, replace with a functional equivalent. We shouldn't strike quality content from the game, especially a classic and popular game mode which does in fact have plenty of HRP potential, it mainly depends on the wizard's player. UNLESS we have an appropriate equivalent gamemode to introduce.

If someone is particularly memeworthy, be sure to ahelp. I do this frequently to bad wizards.

I feel like sometimes I contradict myself when I voice my opinion. While I do strongly believe in rework and not remove, I think Wizard is just one of those gamemodes I can't see as fun on a HRP server. It doesn't really fit the aesthetic of most SS13 servers, even the LRP ones. It's a gamemode designed to be fun for chaotic servers when you think about it. 

So with that in mind... Yeah, I think removing it from secret is a good idea. If people feel like they'd like to play Wizard for some reason then they can vote for it. Half the wizard rounds go the same way anyways. They steal the Captain's ID, steal guns and just cause mayhem around the station with the crew having little to no ability to respond... or it's Wizextended (not always a bad thing but hey).

I'd be inclined to support since I don't really like wizard rounds generally. However, I've enjoyed some and since the biggest issue here seems to be the trolling and so on, I would just stand for supporting a more thoroughly enforcing of the rules, and maybe being way less lenient with such LRP gimmicks.

Please God yes, oh God please remove wiz from secret.

There's much less to gain from wizard being secret in comparison to something like malf ai as that's supposed to be built as a secret.

For me at least wizard is quite dispised and it's the only type of round I've been willing to cryo in just from being fed up of dealing with the same damned gimmicks over and over and over again. I dislike constantly having to RP that i've never seen someone teleport before when really it's reaching the 50th time until they inevitably either fireball me to death, turn me into a statue or turn someone into a farwa. Same tricks, different pony. 

I generally feel the mode would fair much better if it was always voted on as that might entail someone actually having a worthwhile gimmick.

I'm fond of the gamemode, because the culture around wizard usually lends itself towards gimmicks that aren't inherently about beating the shit out of the station crew like malf is, and the kits available give the user a lot of control. The gimmicks I've seen usually focus around fucking with the crew, rather than killing them.

On the flip side, if we had more player controlled round types that aren't designed from the standpoint of station vs. antag, I wouldn't miss this game mode if we removed it. Just as, say, the merc game mode tends to produce gimmicks that pit the players against the station as antags, Wizard creates Wiztards. If you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Removing Wizard from rotation should be something done later.

Having played Technomancer and fought it, it's a fairly enjoyable take on wizardry. I'd like to see it ported though I imagine due to some mechanics involved it'd be a challenge.

Removing something from the secret rotation might as well be removing it entirely. The majority of the rounds are either extended or secret. It is very rare to see something voted for specifically. 

That being said I like the proposed replacement, I had the removal of MALF on my mind is all, I wish there were improvements made there is all, but that is outside the scope of this thread.

Who said this is being removed from secret? Far as I know, a dev is working on it atm.

I was on the fence as we've already lost malf, but fuck me the pattern of early morning lowpop wizard has been so horrifically painful to the soul.

 

Removal, replacement, whatever. It's garbage. If I hear one more 'Hello, I got lost, is this a space castle?' or 'I just graduated from wizard school', I may go insane.

I couldn't +1 this hard enough. You can only run from one side of the station to the other and back so many times trying to deal with a wizard who just keeps teleporting away the second they so much as see you before you want to blow your brains out. It literally plagues deadhour rounds and all a wiz has to do, which they have plenty of times, is go lich and it's GG for the deadhour station. It never gives good RP, it's never fun to deal with, and it's never satisfying to win against, because it took two hours of running around maint with them teleporting constantly before you finally get a sneak tranq dart on them. And even then they still get a get out of jail free card unless you meta knowledge their robes off or they tell you their robes are the source of their power. The only way you can reasonably take off their clothes is if you get them to the brig and try to get them in orange jumpsuits, but good luck getting them more then a few steps before they teleport away and uncuff themselves. God awful gamemode that isn't worth the 1% of time it MIGHT be enjoyable.

Against just removing more and more gamemodes, we will have less variety and people will get feed up with the rest of the stuff we have right now.

I think changing the name to something more science fiction in nature will assist with a lot of the memes that arise from Wizard. I believe Polaris had a different name that was more desirable. Techno-something?

 

I also want to propose considering Cnaym's suggested changes to wizard spells as well as addressing the wand of change, allowing Science to manufacture a cure in some way or making the spell itself temporary. 

 

I often find wizard to just be 'silly extended' more often than not so I wouldn't mind seeing some form of a change.

I believe the issue isnt the game mode but a lack of creativity in said play style. Improving on the wizard role would be better. Editing spells and even adding new ones that can help drive rounds better might be a good idea. It's hard to keep coming up with new ideas when you play the same thing over and over.  That's why I barely do merc/wiz/weeaboswordmaster anymore.

Wizard was not objectively bad like malf AI was, so I do not see the merit of removing it. Geeves has a good bandaid PR up right now.
