OOC: So here we go folks, Sol's government has been faced with a crisis and snap elections for a new leading party+Prime Minister, and it's up to you the people to choose the future of the Sol Alliance. This is a blend of IC and OOC; I am reforming the Alliance, but in a way that gives the community the power to decide the path it takes.

As it stands, the Atlas Party has a cautious majority, taking advantage of the outrage over the now disgraced and resigned Prime Minister and his rather exasperating decision to offer amnesty to all Unathi raiders under fealty to the Izweski. With the crisis remaining volatile and Nanotrasen's blockade by omission leaving an entire planet cut off from space and on the verge of a minor interstellar war, Alliance voters have quite the investment in picking their new Prime Minister "Correctly".

The amount of votes Atlas has 'received' that a party needs to surpass in order to "win" will be withheld until the vote concludes, to leave you all in suspense and put some investment into the elections.

If you are fanny-troubled by this decision, please PM me.

Utopian Front

Candidate: Ashley Logan

Domestic Agenda

Ashley Logan has a reliable history of strong domestic platforms. She has pushed to incorporate all races and species equally into the Sol Alliance. When she was governor of the inner colony world New Edinburg, she had one of the first Tajarans in her cabinet serving as Minister of Education.

Foreign Agenda

Logan has a reliable friendly stance on other factions in the galaxy. Her drive for cooperation and co-existence would, if elected, lead to a friendlier and more galactically active Sol Alliance, with the potential byproduct of a downsizing of the great Alliance navy.

Economic Agenda

Minister Logan has had little benefit or drawback from their economic agenda. It's decisively average, and analysts say an economy under them would be the same shaky and uncertain economy that the Alliance has had since time immemorial; but no one expects them to make it nose-dive...

Trans-stellar Relationship

Mega-corporations are a source of prosperity and opportunities for all people and species, to Logan. Their party has long applauded Nanotrasen for the diversity of its workforce and progressivity of its leadership. While the incident with the Unathi have caused an uncomfortable position for them to find themselves in, analysts predict a Utopian run Sol Alliance would be a very friendly place for the mega-corporations to flourish even further.

Worker's Party

Candidate: William Davidson

Domestic Agenda

William Davidson has long been a friend of unions, being the President of the New Mumbai City Union before being elected Minister to the Senate. The party itself is a loose alliance of unionists, socialists, environmentalists, and others of the 'left' side of Alliance politics. This has them take a very lax stance on many things currently regulated in the Alliance; he has long lobbied for the legalization of ambrosia and mind-breaker, as well as greater civil liberty and legal protections from police overreach.

Foreign Agenda

The Worker's Party has no unified foreign policy; analysts' opinion on their stances vary wildly. There is in-fighting on how to handle the other alien races, sometimes carrying speciesist undertones, and Davidson himself has not commented on this outside a compliment to the "Skrellian allies" during a campaign speech.

Economic Agenda

An economy under Davidson is expected to face difficulties, as he is known to expand regulations and protections at the expense of corporations, and these tend to require hefty tax increases to afford. His calls to "Unionize all trans-stellars" also has many either leery or hopeful.

Trans-stellar Relationship

"UNIONIZE OR DEMOBILIZE" the chant goes. Davidson's pressuring mega-corporations to unionize and give their workers sweeping new protections and rights is seen as irritating by the trans-stellars. The fear of this being the actual position of the Alliance government itself rather than the handful of governors, mayors, and candidates running around keep several board of director's up at night.

GAIA

Candidate: Miles Theodore Chater

Domestic Agenda

Chater has long sought reform of the Alliance education system. He has been critical of the heavy decentralization of history courses in particular, and has proposed that after resolving the Unathi situation his next big policy push would be for standardization of Alliance educational standards, and a reducement in immigration for aliens into the Alliance until unemployment is tackled, and a push of fostering the multiculturalism of humanity that makes it stronger, for GAIA. The critique against decentralization extends to the rest of the Alliance political system; a government under Chater would see political power once more shift inwards to Earth and Mars...

Foreign Agenda

Chater has been critical of the Alliance' policy of stationing the military in alien systems. He has stated that if elected, he would demobilize the Alliance Navy from the Tajaran and Unathi systems, moving them to the outer colonies. He would leave the fleet's Skrellian positions untouched; Chater has a positive stance on the alliance between Skrell and Humanity.

Economic Agenda

The interconnectedness of the galaxy is not a positive, in Chater's mind. The sharing of technology and partnership that can be beneficial to humanity are to be encouraged, but the investment in the alien system's is something that he wants to see reduced. In short, invest and localize industries onto planets, reducing their dependance on interstellar trade, making them more self-sufficient and equalizing wealth among them.

Trans-stellar Relationship

GAIA blames the trans-stellar corporations for the rampant poverty and lawlessness of the frontier systems of human space, and at the edge of Alliance space. Chater has called for a crack-down on Nanotrasen, especially since Nanotrasen has almost caused a minor interstellar war with the Unathi. He claims that the mega-corporations are "out of control", and seeks a firmer stance on curtailing their extremely troubling power and influence.

ATLAS-SNL

Candidate: Cesare Pietro Valerio Augustiani

Domestic Agenda

Cesare under his Consulate in Europa, has been an avid supporter of the police and educational forces, for their aid in liberating the working class Human from echelons of poverty and squalor, he calls for increased funding to these sectors to combat the mass poverty and crime issues caused by the lack of education, especially those drawn in to piracy to support their families.

Foreign Agenda

In the way of foreign relations, Cesare has been without a doubt a jingoistic influence, many a times upsetting Xeno diplomats by staging demonstrations in favour of the annexation of Moghes and Adhomai, however out of respect due to their development Cesare refuses to comment on the Skrell and Dionae.

Economic Agenda

Unfortunately Cesare, is honest with his rhetoric on the economy, for during his tenure as Consul of Europa, he has nationalized several of the large corporations on the planet to be placed under public authority, this while good against exploitation, is not good for the competitiveness of the economy with the European economy facing a small deficit from the increase in Minimum wage and loss of competition.

Trans-stellar Relationship

As stated by the Manifesto of New Rome (governing document of ATLAS-SNL thought) the party reminds everyone that they are Corporatists, opposing the rampant free market created by what they call the inefficient and corrupt Liberals. As such they take a hard stance against Nanotrasen due to not only their status as the Scrooge McDuck of the galaxy, but also for their diversity in employment of Non-Human minorities, despite this however, ATLAS supports Nanotrasen in their quarrel with the Unathi in the name of Human solidarity.

Question--maybe I missed a previous post somewhere, but what is the stance of the ATLAS party and its candidate?

OOPS

http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=13833#p13833 < here it is

TBH I included Atlas at the last minute, forgetting to include their info, because I thought it would be hilarious if some people wanted to stuff their ballot and make it harder for anyone else to beat them.

I'll fix that in a bit.

((So if ATLAS wins, are we gonna have to deal with

"Fuck the [insert your whitelist race here]" every round?))

No, because it is still our servers players, just because the government stance changes in the fluff, doesn't mean that NT's stance will change, nor that of the players IC.

Now can everyone just please calm down and STOP JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS BEFORE JACKBOOT FIXES HIS OVERSIGHT. Jesus

Edit: he has partially fixed this oversight by providing a link to the original application for ATLAS.

Just what pops out at me. Anyone can let me know if I'm off the mark.

TLDR Choices:

1.Same Sol Government. (Like this vote never happened. Seemingly nothing changes.) Loves aliens all over. NT is love.

2. Raise Taxes, Legalize Meth and Unionize workers. NT are oppressive jerks who need to unionize workers.

3. Humanity tries to fix its own problems. Fix education. Aliens are okay. Move troops out of Lizard/Cat space. Send troops to help the neglected Outer Colonies. NT is too powerful and isn't helping Sol.

4. Literally Fascism. A few interesting ideas revolving around "I hope you hate aliens, because we sure do."

And here we have it. The mechanics and implications are hitherto revealed:

ATLAS, by virtue of IC events to add to their threat level, gains a +7% to their total vote percentage, taken out of the lowest 2 parties.

GAIA: 44%

ATLAS: 36%

Utopia: 11%

Worker's Party: 9%

This is the new make-up of the Alliance Senate, and our new Prime Minister is Miles Theodore Chater, since GAIA went over the 40% threshold necessary to 'win' the PM seat.

As it stands, it looks like we're facing a coalition between GAIA and ATLAS. I'll work out what exactly this means from the IC route with the players who formed these parties, but as it stands, this is the new government of the Alliance.

Full disclosure note:

The mechanics of the voting was slightly tweaked to accommodate the original unpopularity of the original. So if these mechanics are different than originally stated elsewhere, that's why.

Couldn't Gaia form a coalition with any of the other parties to get a majority? GAIA and ATLAS don't seem well matched politically. They disagree on almost all policy points.

Wouldn't it make more sense for GAIA to try to merge with the Worker's party? They'd still be up by four points, and their views seem far more compatible.

Except you know, they agree on everything except foreign policy.

Hmm...

Domestic: Agree on Education as a Priority

Foreign: Major disagreements. ATLAS is jingoistic, GAIA is isolationist.

Economic: Minor disagreements. ATLAS is statist, GAIA is isolationist.

Trans-Stellar: Major disagreements. Both agree that mega corporations are a problem but disagree on why and in the key issue of the Nanotransen scuffle with the Unathi, they are completely opposed.

I'd say that it's more that they have a few points of similarity, mainly in Domestic policy. For the rest... not so much.

Also, if they merged, they'd almost certainly have to make concessions to the other party due to their size, and the more extreme elements might split from both parties weakening the coalition. It would be better to take a weaker party who has less to offer and more to gain, and completely absorb them.

But this is ultimately up to Jackboot.

Would it not be more interesting and offer more opprotunities for shenanigans if we had the two major parties struggling to cooperate and reconcile their differences to govern effectively? The government doesn't have to be effective and streamlined - there's a lot of story still to be had if they're as dysfunctional as the US Congress.

It would, but wouldn't it be more interesting to see them struggle if all four were players? GAIA needs either the Workers, or Utopia, to get a majority. Either will do.

ATLAS needs BOTH to win a vote, but if they get both, then they can overrule the leading party.

In this case, the two smaller parties have a lot of power. A coalition just destroys all that juicy bickering and backbiting.

Except no one likes agrees with anything Utopia says,

Isn't it lucky for everyone then that one does not have to agree with one's allies of convenience, merely to find ones goals temporarily aligned?

Well, as a creator of Gaia, I have decided to listen to Jackboot's suggestion and ally it with Atlas. The thing is, after a long discussion with Tytos, I have realized a good deal of goals align, but approach differs. So, why not. It's still an alliance of convinience.

With more than 80%, they can pull off everything efficiently and without much resistance. The new government will now attempt to solve the Unathi crysis.
