Species you are applying to play:

Skrell

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt):

Pale Blue-Green

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?:

Yes

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I want to play this race for a couple reasons. I've always planned on making a skrell application for quite a while, but I never managed to get around to it. Namely, I think the idea of the skrell being a highly technologically advanced race that was present on the galactic stage well before humanity is a very, very cool thing. They also have a unique sense of "alien-ness" to them I suppose, with their usual way of interacting with other people and how they see the world. The whole genophage thing aside, their society is also in a pretty well-off state, which is quite a refreshing change to me compared to other races like Tajara and Unathi. Most of my characters also tend to pretty heavily believe in synthetic rights, mostly, and getting to play a character that has an obvious reason not to feel as such would also be nice.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Skrell tend to face things from a largely logical point of view, rather than an emotionally fueled one. While some might think this makes them come across as cold and emotionless, this couldn't be further from the truth, as Skrell are a highly social and emotional species, but many of the nuances of their forms of communication are lost on humans and other species that lack the ability to pick up on them. They place a high value on science and discovery in their society, as well as pursuit of these fields for self gain. Skrell live by far the longest out of the other races, sometimes up to 500 years old, meaning that many will tend to experience very much in their lifetimes, or likely may be far more educated than other races. They also, for obvious reasons concerning the Glorsh-Omega incident, tend to have a considerable distrust and in some cases hatred of synthetics and artificial intelligence.

Character Name:

Lusqiil Weiish-Kal

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Lusquiil was born in 2392, on the icy world of Aliose. Both of his parents were researchers - his father a medical scientist, specialising in the field of genetic enhancement, while his mother was a scientist with a specialisation in chemistry and physics. Lusquiil was an only child, as the rigorous fertility treatments that his parents received only went so far for the two; allowing them a single child, but nothing more. This led to the both of them putting a large amount of pressure on Lusquiil to succeed from a very early age, but also treated him as a considerably spoiled child, as he would be their only one. They imparted their most important values onto him, the principles of Qeblak, a distrust of synthetics, and a proper respect for the sciences. They set his path for him very early in his life: he would ultimately have to adopt a field of scientific research to take part in, and contribute to Skrellian society in some way. Fortunate for Lusquiil, even without his parents' direction, he always had a keen interest in the various fields of science. As such, he was encouraged to go down that path - to gain the pride of his parents, to contribute to the grander society, and to fulfil his own wonders and desires, too.

Lusquiil graduated from his initial schooling among the top five in his class, his highest marks in chemistry and botany. He initially applied for Gliutip’lyaz University, remaining hopeful that his grades would be enough to ensure entry - however the Jargon Federation is a large place, and he found that he fell just a bit too short. Not willing to let one roadbump throw him off track, he applied for a less renowned but still respectable university, and gained admittance. After his studies, he took on a specialisation in biochemistry and in the field of xenobotanical studies. He became eager to learn of new ways to engineer plant life to gain different, more interesting, and helpful traits. With dreams of discovering and creating brand new hybrids of plants, as soon as he finished his education, he travelled to the second wave systems; to Xrim specifically. It's there that he helped document, research, and experiment with the variety of immense plantlife that was found on the thriving jungle planet, which kept him busy for a number of years.

After a decade of this work, he found himself wishing to go to new places, and to experience new things. Lusquiil was always fascinated by humans after contact was first made with them. What facets of their culture he had seen he enjoyed thoroughly, but he'd never truly had the opportunity to meet any face-to-face. Longing not only for a chance to experience contact with them himself, but also the chance to analyze and study plants types that humanity cultivated, he set forth for the system of Tau Ceti. This worried his parents considerably, due to tales of the propogation of synthetics in human space, Tau Ceti especially. He was unsettled by such tales as well, but he assured them that he wasn't going to let them intimidate him. With his parents' hesitant blessing, he left for Tau Ceti.

Lusquiil initially found himself on Luthien - an unideal environment for him, to be sure, however he worked predominantly inside climate controlled biodomes. He assisted with the research programs that handled research and development of resillient forms of flora and fauna for adaptation to extreme environments; obviously focussing more upon flora specifically. His work caught the eye of a NanoTrasen representative, and he was offered a position aboard the NSS Aurora. Naturally, Lusquiil was hesitant at first, hearing of the company's use of Artificial Intelligence and stationbound units, however it's not every day that an offer to work upon a cutting edge research station comes around. After some consideration, he accepted the offer, and began employment under NanoTrasen.

What do you like about this character?

I like that the character possesses a lot of curiosity; which is something that assists greatly in his line of work, but it can sometimes be a double-edged sword, getting him a little in over his head. He is also a studious worker that genuinely loves his choice of career, and having a character that entirely loves his job will be something fun to do, I think.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

I'd keep it around a 7.5-8/10. I'm decent, or at least I like to think, but I'm far from perfect.

Notes:

As always, any criticisms, both positive or negative are always welcome and encouraged!

This is a +1 from me. I haven't interacted much with Cactus IC or OOC, but the writing on this was surprisingly pleasant to read IMO. I got a good sense of Lusquiil even before the 'What do you like about this character' section, and think he'd be a nice addition to the GROWING SKRELL ARMY species' playerbase.

I am curious about Lusquiil in the present tense. I'm curious as to what his goals, aspirations, and hobbies are, as well as his outlook on the arts, both old and emerging. Things in that sort of vein! Not many think to include - including myself - what is, in my opinion, the most fun thing to write about the characters, which is what they like and dislike.

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

As for the rest of your question, Lusquiil's ultimate goal, likely like many others, is to ultimately contribute to the wider society with his experimentation by creating genetically superior crops in the hydroponics industry, but that's his more wider goal. Short term, he seeks to learn more about humanity and even the other more recently discovered races. Not only that, but he's especially interested in the flora types unique to their homeworlds, and wants a chance to research and document those in a lab. Ultimately he aspires to make his parents proud, to become a scientist of note, and for his work to make some kind of worthwhile difference.

As for his hobbies; gardening (just gardening, no experimentation) is something he finds to be thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing. As well as that though, he is a great appreciator of music, and as such often listens to it in his free time as well, the human classical genre being his favourite. He even finds painting to be enjoyable, despite being beyond terrible at it, too. They're very much not a fan of the louder and more fast paced music genres of more modern times however, prefer quiet nights in, and have an affinity for taking care of dionae nymphs almost like pets.

Because I'm a bad friend, I took a super long time to get around to saying anything nice about Cactus. May he forgive my arrogance.

I won't claim to be any sort expert on the Skrell or anything, but I did have a good time meticulously picking apart reading through this application. I can easily vouch for Asaar and Reid being good lads, and I think Cactus has the sheer mental fortitude required to pretend to be a space frog.

I admit that I've become very endeared to this character very quickly. They're a little spoiled, they've faced a little bit of defeat before, they went to the planet I wrote - and you've even written in the importance of hydroponics farming! You have a very well-written frog.

Application accepted. And I'm really sorry for the late reply.
