  1. This is a pretty simple idea. Only important people who would have cloning in their Nanotrasen healthcare plan should be cloned. This means Heads of Staff, Security, Engineers, and Scientists would be candidates for cloning. Civilians like Bartenders, Assistants, Cargo Techs, etc. would not. It makes sense that a large mega corporation like Nanotrasen would undercut employees like this and it also encourages people to not be as liberal with their lives or with killing people unless absolutely necessary. From a gameplay perspective, I could see a lot of people not liking this idea because it would mean if someone ganked you and you were a botanist or chef or something then you'd have no chance of coming back unless you had on medical records that upon death you would want your brain donated to science or something. This is just something that popped up in my head while reading through lore and I figured i'd run it by the suggestions board since i've noticed some discussion about Aurora not being a "true" heavy RP server.
  2. Thanks for the welcome! You'd be right! If I have to slow myself down with colors I like to run Boros or Izzet but I got a major interest in trying out Simic. Otherwise my preferred type of deck is colorless EDH. Right now I run Daretti red artifact EDH because money constraints my dream Karn deck. Simic is really fun, always have lots of options. I however run mostly a monogreen eldrazi-but-not-really deck that's almost entirely singles, except for a few ramp cards and counterspells (mono-green counterspells, they never see it coming). Yeah I really find the "bounce for bigness" effect interesting, plus all the draw power you can get from it. Do you run that one green eldrazi card that spits out the little 0/1 tokens? I forget what it's called.

  4. I noticed the Aurora wiki's lore and I dip in there once in a while for a better understanding of things or when i'm character creating. I'd definitely be interested in learning your antaggy secrets (and also getting to set up singulo again because lately i've been on servers that only use supermatter and lemme tell ya that's a nightmare!)

  8. I agree that it shouldn't be a job, but if it were something that people get randomly selected for now THAT would be interesting. Then it could be this whole thing where the person either keeps their powers a secret or hands themselves over to the proper authorities and hope for the best. Geneticists wouldn't have to grind through enzymes for the power and instead could just extract a buffer from these individuals if they so choose. This all being said, I don't think everyone should be gifted exclusively with TK. Bring back some of the minor powers for this sort of thing. Some people might get some sort of great advantage that they can choose to use or ignore, and others might get nothing or a minor power that may or may not benefit them. If the right staff are on board then who knows, SEC could turn into some sort of psychic super force for the shift or Engineering could be wiring solars naked. Or your friendly neighborhood psychic janitor would get swooped up, loyalty implanted, and set as SEC's secret weapon against communi- I mean seditious corporate mutineers.

  10. Hello! My name is David but I go by Aetherscald, I am turning 20 in 8 days and this post is to introduce myself so that I can better ingratiate myself with the Aurora community. I'll start off with how I got into SS13. I first learned of this game via 8chan's /v/ board. They advertised their resident server known as "Hatestation" and after reading the starter's guide on the wiki for /tg/station I went ahead and took the plunge to understanding this game. I honestly remember very little from when I first played or what other servers I went on, but I do remember being very confused by the way things were different for every server due to different codes being used. Events I distinctly remember was being asked to play cards by a changeling and getting eaten, waiting 50000 years to get cloned while reading the wiki for more information, and my first attempt at being a Roboticist, while being aided by a janitor borg who kept giving me posters to hang up around my lab while I tried figuring out how to make an exosuit. From there it's just been me dipping my toes in other science related occupations and learning the ropes through trial and error. My first experience with RP was when I was about 13 and I was involved with a Bioshock roleplaying community on Deviantart where I peddled my own fanon of the underwater city of Rapture being rebuilt by splicers of different factions. After that sunk and I lost interest I got more involved with a Fallout roleplaying community on Facebook where I really honed my writing so to speak and made long lasting friends, despite interest falling and drama increasing in the community. Now i'm here and very interested to be a part of something a lot more interactive. My biggest flaw as a person is that i'm impulsive which is reflected in how I play my characters sometimes. For example, as of this writing, I am currently banned for blowing up the holodeck on impulse despite not being an antagonist, purely because I acted on the impulse of doing so for my own entertainment. While this may seem like i'm prone to shitty behavior, I promise that it's not a consistent thing that happens and you have nothing to worry about regarding whether or not i'm going to stab you in the eyes with a screwdriver "because I felt like it". If I wanted to do stuff like that regularly, i'd go on literally any other server where you're allowed to do that. I like this server's feel and community so I plan on keeping myself on the level with it's rules in the future. I strive to be creative and unique with my writing and characters while also remaining inspired. Generally if someone says "This character reminds me of...." then I feel like i'm not doing good enough. If someone goes out of their way to tell me that they really like what i'm doing with a character then I enterprise on that and try to flesh it out some more. Otherwise, I try to be as friendly as I can and meet people with similar interests. And this is the point of this post. My interests are watching films like Goodfellas, Rocky, The Wolf of Wall Street, Pacific Rim, etc. A wide range of music that I can't really narrow down to a specific genre as being my favorite. Reading anything dystopian or "close to reality, but not quite" books. And world building my own ideas as a hobby. My main communal hobbies are Magick: The Assembling, shooting the shit with my buddy in his garage while he fixes up motorcycles, inviting friends over so I can make them food and catch up, and dating once every three months. I leave to become a U.S Navy Culinary Specialist on the 28th of this month so i'll be inactive for a few months after that. So yeah! Feel free to ask questions or talk to me or whatever. I'm really chill about things and generally don't mind talking about anything. I can be crass about personal subjects though so if your dog died, i'm honestly the worst person to talk to about it.

  12. BYOND Key: Aetherscald Character Names: David Swainsborough is a scientist/xenobiologist who has an obsession with establishing a scientific legacy for himself. He alters between having dementia to having cancer in his nervous system depending on which job he's playing. As a cancerous Xenobiologist he is obsessed with finding a cure for his disease through slime breeding, which leads to him attempting to breed green slimes and injecting himself with the core. Thus curing him and securing his legacy as the first xenohuman to cure a terminal illness. As a scientist he is obsessed with perfecting a formula for a chemical gas bomb that can reach supernova proportions. Aodh O'hara is my engineer of Celtic descent who is prideful of his abilities despite his gimp leg. He aspires to become a chief engineer as well as to know the ins and outs of the station. When he's not working, he's drinking at the bar and challenging his coworkers to boxing matches. Salvador Guttierez is a Colombian quartermaster who has a secret life of crime. He stylizes himself as a smuggler of weapons, drugs, and bodies and is always looking to cut a deal with the right people to get ahead in life. Quick to sell his associates out to stay one step ahead of a prison cell, he has evaded prison for years. A womanizer by heart, he has a soft spot for the ladies and will sometimes take a risk to woo any he likes. Species you are applying to play: Dionae Gestalt What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): n/a Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: In character, I love playing a neutral alien species that just want to perform a task and learn things rather than be emotionally invested in anything like character relations. I like that Dionae are hard to kill as well and I generally don't like waiting forever to be cloned or borged or what have you so staying alive is a plus. I also just generally gravitate towards hiveminded or plant-like aliens anyways. I've played a dionae nymph and gestalt a few times before on other servers so I already have some experience with the species. Out of character reasons are that I play the game on a slow crappy laptop and I move noticeably slower than other humans when i'm playing a human. This isn't a problem as a dionae gestalt however as there isn't any delay for a species that already moves slowly. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Dionaea are generally unambitious in comparison to humans. They love to learn and are very curious, and also have no concept of human concepts like sleep or personal space. They also refer to themselves as "we" or "us" in reference to their existence as several lifeforms. Off the top of my head I believe they also emulate other species' emotions and personality quirks. Character Name: The Canopy of Horizons Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs The Canopy of Horizons was grown from a diona pod in the Zeng-hu pharmaceuticals labs by a fellow Dionae gestalt named "Light upon the Silver Lake" who was the resident Xenoflorist. Horizons would go on to learn from the scientists and Lake, the fundamentals of botany and chemistry. Eventually, once reaching adulthood, Horizons decided to dedicate their life to researching plant-based animals and organisms, hoping to find a correlation to their own origins. Through years of dedicated observation and study under the tutelage of other Zeng-Hu scientists, Horizons grasped the mechanics of botany adequately and filed for transfer to an outpost on a terrestrial jungle planet, bidding farewell to their former colleagues and Lake, their mentor. Upon arriving Horizons allegedly made great strides researching sentient plant life but was forced to leave due to a strange anomaly occurring to that planet's star, which led to Horizon's current namesake, as the event nearly led to their death from lack of radiation to feed off of. This event would also have a dramatic effect on Horizons, having him research and invest in religion before deciding upon their own theological philosophy that they sometimes share with other individuals who are interested. Zeng-hu would establish an inter-corporate employee contract involving not only Horizons, but 137 individual workers as well, to foster relations with Nanotrasen for future collaborative projects between companies. This made no difference to Horizons as they were more than happy to work in a larger more well equipped station with a diverse host of crew. What do you like about this character? If I had to say I liked anything about Horizons, it would be their fondness for other Dionae and organic life in general as they are a station born and raised Dionae, hardly experiencing a wholly natural environment save for their own lab. This leads to interesting interactions with dionae, humans, tajarans, etc. but also makes Horizons less likely to want to interact with IPCs or go anywhere there isn't a host of organisms. They enjoy the company on living breathing beings but are reluctant to be reminded that they are in space and surrounded by metal and plastic, save for the few pockets of organic rooms that exist on the station, such as the library or hydroponics lab. So I basically like my character for liking their roots. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Probably an 8/10. It really depends on how engaging the other person is. Notes: The primary jobs The Canopy of Horizons would stick with are Chaplain or Botanist, possibly even Xenobiologist. It goes Chaplain medium, Xenobiologist low, Botanist High. This is mainly because I want this character to be someone nobody NEEDS to be quick or responsive for.

  14. Maybe what would be better is a "mafia" game mode where if there are three people in a department that aren't in a Head position, one of them is selected to be a goodfella and is given special orders. So if you're in SEC chances are you're a guy on the inside and you're able to manipulate your fellow wiseguys' earlier release if they get caught or delay investigations. Engineers can sabotage and arrange meetings in the maintenance tunnels. Scientists hack their autolathes to provide contraband and maybe even research illegal technology. Cargo smuggles things in, etc. And they're all given some universal tools to doing this and are given a goal like "steal $200,000 worth of stuff, escape without getting pinched" etc.

    Good God

Take it from me kids, breaking the rules is sometimes fun! *ollies out*
  16. I suppose you're all right and I don't see any point in persisting the idea against a unanimous opinion. Are there any ideas for changing it to be less antagonistic and more of an interactive thing? Maybe it could serve a purpose as a game mode antag?
  17. Exactly. Almost no one save for the Research Director and the med team that comes to rescue you from your brood will ever see how the process goes and even then no one really cares. If anything it makes Xenobiology more doable and interactive since they'll be able to generate their cores and implement them in unique and interesting ways. Like a traitor xenobiologist could finally be arsed to use pepper spray and emp cores if he wants to. The possibilities open up in a whole new way. Hopefully this is considered for the new map at the very least.
  18. So in the month or so i've started playing SS13 and the past few weeks in particular i've hung around Aurora, i've had a recurring thought. Due to the heavy RP aspect of the server affecting gameplay to a significant degree, I wondered if there could be a more RP orientated occupation that manages to make waves if you can do it effectively. Something like Psychiatrist except with risk and reward implemented. To that extent I propose the occupation of a Professional Criminal. Now most may be thinking "People break corporate law just fine enough already, why would we add a job that focuses entirely on that?" and rest assured I have it thought out. Let me lay down how it would work. Summary: A professional criminal or just professional to save words starts in a vacant office or in the bar if there is no vacant office when the new layout is implemented in the future. A professional will have some unique features at his or her disposal but it's entirely up to the player's imagination to decide what their goal is. Are they an intergalactic drug cartel kingpin? Do they specialize in aiding antagonists such as Vox Raiders with stealing or Syndicate with infiltration? This is entirely up to you. In game modes that require no real interaction with antagonists like extended, you can just as easily commit yourself to establishing a network of criminals amidst the station using your powers of persuasion and of course forms of leverage such as money, drugs, favors, etc. Purpose: Ultimately the professional's job is to provide interesting interaction among station crew. This doesn't mean the role is geared against SEC or command personnel at all actually. Quite the contrary, the professional is likey to aid SEC in a myriad of ways in exchange for turning a blind eye to their clandestine operations. An example would be identification of revs, giving information that would lead to apprehension of antagonists, providing special services not available to them, etc. As said before this relies on the player's RP ability. Mechanics: A professional needs to start out with the seeds to bear his or her criminal empire. These seeds would be something along the lines of a forged ID that can be rewritten to say that the criminal is one job when they are not. A criminal would start with a watered down traitor mechanic of getting items from a PDA code where they're able to procure special items such as a cryptographic sequencer that is RESTRICTED to only affect certain machines such as gibbers and autolathes. This is to encourage forming ties with other crew members to expand your criminal options in unique and interesting ways. For example, paying a chef to "handle some garbage" for you by using that gibber you "upgraded". Or acquiring an RCD from a scientist's hacked autolathe, to whom you promised energy weapons to in exchange for their silence and a moment of time in their laboratory. Another feature could be notes on where to find dead drops for you to unlock and use the contents to further your machinations. One idea is a machine that you can establish a network connection to your seedy organization (or Syndicate's) communications relays to redeem stolen items and equipment you procure for cash or points to access new tools or to pay off your patsies. Other items from the PDA could be insulated gloves, PDA cartridges, disguises, and even information on crew members to determine who would be the best to ask for their assistance in your dealings. Interactions: It's entirely up to the player how this played and I can say it'd probably be one of the only roles that can both help and/or hinder the crew in it's special way. Distribution of illegal drugs and weapons can make medbay and sec's jobs a nightmare no doubt, but having an informant who possibly works with a real threat to the station could make their presence worth it. AI and borgs would no doubt be the Professional's only natural and consistent enemy due to the fact that they cannot be swayed with money or substances in general, and strictly adhere to their laws unless tampered with. Which would encourage a professional to make friends with his local Roboticist to rectify this threat. In-game, the general rule of thumb should be that no one knows this person is a criminal until evidence is found of their activities. Which could make for an interesting shift for Detectives or even sec officers who go out as undercover cops. It's up to everyone how they want to approach this role both in terms of playing as and playing with. Off the top of my head this is all I can think of though i'm sure if anyone has anyone questions i'll be able to answer them sufficiently.
  19. In my experience as a Xenobiologist, generally people let the slimes pile up on the operating table and never really get around to harvesting the cores unless it's a specific slime that they wanted to breed or they need grey cores. Also if there are two xenobiologists, neither of them usually want to be stuck doing repetitive harvesting at all. Also the piles of dead monkeys bring to question hygiene and disease in an RP sense (maybe also an in-game sense, I don't know if you guys coded the game to make dead monkeys cause disease if left out too long) which is why I suggest putting recycler machines in the game that allow you to basically stuff a slime/monkey into its respective machine and out pops a cube or core. It'd make soloing Xenobio less tedious and also there would finally be a point to having a bunch of dead monkeys lying around, rather than shooting them out the airlock or giving them to the chef.
  20. Alright cool. I don't ever see drones so that's cool that it's an option. I hope that means it has a good chance of making it in. It really is satisfying just having an armada of medibots stationed at the mech bay garage doors, opening the doors, setting them to patrol and watching them fly out like the Wizard of Oz. Then of course they go all over the station looking for people to heal. I never get to make security robots but I assume it's the same concept. Check it out on a server that uses /tg/station's code for a better idea of how it works. I'm really bad at explaining and selling an idea.
  21. Yeah but i'm talking about when people die. Then they'd have something to do instead of dogpiling on whoever killed them or whatever else it is ghosts do.
  22. On the /tg/station code there is a feature that gives roboticists' the ability to scan for any nearby robots and send them on patrol or whatever. You can also access their maintenance panel and affect behavior which is neat. Also you can create drone husks with the exosuit fabricator for a very minimal amount of metal and glass. Ghosts can then go inside these drones and repair the ship but are not allowed to interact with crew members in anyway whatsoever. They get their own laws which go along the lines of "fix the ship, don't talk to anyone, don't prevent damage just fix it, people don't exist, don't do anything other than fix the ship." and I think it's a nice way of letting ghosts observe or stay busy until round end or they get borged/cloned/etc. as well as letting the ship last longer. Also people can wear them as hats which is pretty dumb but could be fun shenanigans. I figured this was something worth suggesting since it's a neat feature that can really keep people occupied during slow rounds and give Roboticists some interesting PDA stuff to mess with.
