Last_stand_crew Posted Monday at 12:42 Posted Monday at 12:42 (edited) BYOND Ckey: Stationworker337 Discord username: Last stand crew Character names: Amy Veir, (Mr.))) William Freeman Species you are applying to play: IPC ------------------------------ General Whitelist Requirements Have you read the lore pages for the species you wish to be whitelisted for?: yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this species?: 1. Playing only on one species (i have no whitelist on any species right now) sometimes gets boring, so i want to try something new; 2. I have played this species on other builds, including more RP focused like baystation, so i have some experience with that; 3. Playing as a synthetically created person, coming from personality, not human, many people return to this problem: machine is commonly considered not alive, but what if it has a personality? There are many projects like films, games and books, that raise a question about this, let's remember old classic "I, Robot" from Isaac Asimov, but these same projects also illustrate other side of synthetic life, like "Matrix" or "Terminator", where machines aren't "restricted" with feelings, emotions, and instincts, those think only efficiently, what i want to say with this is it's an interesting experience, i had to interact with players who played on IPCs, someone acted like human, some acted like complete full "stupid" machines, i want to try it myself now. What makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a human?: Compacting, rewinding and rethinking about what i mentioned in third paragraph of previous question, synthetics, let's say, biologically, aren't considered alive, and some people think like it, then others think more philosophically, like "I think so i'm alive" treat synthetics like somewhat equal to them, some treat them as a potential threat, etc. I want to say with this that, first off, others approach you differently, sometimes significantly differently, and second, coming from the paragraph again, usually, you have more options for your character, because your base isn't restricted with being a human, you can be dead-hearted machine, you can have feelings, you're not human, you are different. Add-on: In the setting of Aurora IPCs are mostly considered as machines, and with machines i mean just tools, that are made to be used, greatest example is Solarian Alliance, where it's really hard to become free as an IPC, and is pretty dangerous alongside Biesel, where it's a bit easier, still not appreciated by others. Some places Free IPCs can't even get to, such as Dominia, where those are destroyed upon detection. Fortunately for free IPCs there is a place where they can be reliefed - Republic of Konyang, where IPCs are second most civilians and are equal to humans. Some diferent add-on: Something about difference between IPCs and humans outside personality. Positronic brain is made mostly human-like, so they can learn by experience, learn on how to adapt to some things, learn something they saw, heard, like a manual, etc. Still, they are machines, and their thinking skills are incredible, compared to most organics. IPCs personalities develop mostly because of them trying to adapt to the outer world. They pick tactics and desicions to get what they need, sometimes despite standarts, sometimes they can do some "unthinkable" things. ------------------------------ Character Application Character Name: E.M.I.L.Y. Write a backstory for your character. This may include their origin, education, personality and how they arrived to the SCCV Horizon. Emily (is a brain, I.ntegrated in a **shell model** P.ositronic C.hassis) was constructed in 2452 at Biesel by a robotic company called "Rieg's Robos Inc." for a commercial medical company, named "Heavens island" which was mostly a space hospital, located at Valley Hale. Emily was specialized as nurse, named by workers, who thought it'd be funny if the name was not only human, but also an acronym. Emily's job was pretty simple: get something, assist somewhere, babysit someone. Co-workers talked to Emily mostly briefly, or input sheat-tons commands as if Emily was a toy they loved to play with. But company administration soon realised, that their robot gets damaged much by accidents, little negligences of co-workers, customers, so after ten years of work Emily wasn't really repaired, and most of the time was all in clothes, only showing that face with long gone smile, because facial expressions system repairs were mostly stopped too. Emily was almost abandoned. all patients she had were combatants, blind, or affective, because they needed lots of attention, care and some soft words, which others sometimes had no time or mood for... After another five years Emily was in so bad condition and could only do some cargo job, because already scared customers. She was not just abandoned, no one talked to her besides cases she was needed. Eventually Emily got sold. Being sold for almost no price because of condition, Emily was sent to a cruise Yacht and got a fundamental repair right away at Rieg's Robos (and it costed around 70 k standart credits, now let's remember how much does usually a new shell model IPC cost))). Emily's new onwer was the onwer of the Yacht, his name was George. George was a 76 year old man, who bought Emily as a maid and other private service work. George loved to talk to Emily, and wanted to teach her art. He even moved with Emily to some beautiful places, museums and even risked to show a black hole pretty close. After some time it was fully clear that George won't last long, since he got a brain cancer. George was desperate for leaving something behind him, so he freed Emily and gave a will of all his possesions. Some time later, Emily sold almost everything and bought a little cargo ship, wandering all and there, freelancing, going for part time jobs. Emily thought of returning to Heavens island, But coming there, and walking through some of destroyed corridors, Emily got in the center of a gunfight. Emily ran into cover, only to realise, that it is already occupied, and got disabled by an EM pulse. After activating, first thing sensors realised was the fact that shell has no damages, but most systems were locked. some time later Emily realises that the thing happened was two PMCs fighting each other, one of which was from PMCG. The one, recovering Emily, was a worker from Sekhmet IG group, that came after, and, during a little chatter, they offered a job in their company... A couple of days, and Emily decided to say "yes", and, after acclimatisation period, signed up on Horizon as an EMT trainee. Maybe that is the job... How has the recent events of the Orion Spur impacted your character? Events such as the Phoron Scarcity, the Solarian Collapse or even the Invasions of Biesel for interstellar-wide affairs, while region-specific events such as the Peacekeeper Mandate, The Titan Rises or even Cold Dawn may impact your character. Emily was owned by a company and wasn't informed of anything much, always working, always on duty, most she could know was some rumors from patients, co-workers, but that's mostly it. Emily's next owner George wasn't talking much about politics (rather about life, death, glass of vodka on the table (local joke)), and after getting the freedom Emily actually didn't spend much time, the fateful day came pretty soon, so Emily knows from little to zero, and it didn't affect her much... How does your character view the megacorporation they work for? Emily doesn't think much about that, but could say one thing: "Despite it being called a corporation, PMCG is a group of PMCs and the one i'm working in is mostly commercial medical aid company... Nothing much about it." Edited Thursday at 16:09 by NM_
NM_ Posted Thursday at 15:49 Posted Thursday at 15:49 Hi, This re-application does not address the feedback and questions provided during the initial denial of your previous application in a meaningful manner. At this time, I will be denying this application. You are welcome to re-apply in one week (earliest 10/9/25) with a new character concept. I encourage you to consider the following before re-applying: Look through the forums for previously accepted IPC whitelists. You'll get an understanding of what we look for in characters, their backstories, and the applicant's understanding of the species. Have your friends or anyone on the server review your new character and offer their feedback. They can give you insights and suggestions, especially helpful if they happen to be IPC WL holders. Please keep in mind that the Synth lore team cannot tell you how to write, nor guide you in such a way that would be unfair to candidates who do not receive similar assistance. Continue to interact with IPC characters in-game! You can engage with them and see how they are effectively portrayed on the ship. Most will be happy to answer any questions you might have as well. Read thoroughly through the IPC pages. Ask questions in the lore channel on the main discord or the synth section of the lore discord. Some broad, general suggestions while you work on a new character: The age of an IPC matters. Their exposure to society, how it views them, and how they are treated has a substantial impact on their personalities, views, and methodology when navigating a galaxy that largely oppresses them. How does that shape an IPC's behavior? What defining events in their life change their perspective on a particular topic? What aspirations might they have? What motivates them - if anything? A younger synthetic will be more impressionable (note: not lacking in intelligence, just experience/nuance) with perhaps a less evolved worldview than an older unit with substantial experience. How does it influence their view of Humans and their possible interest in Synthetic religions as a result? The reality of the setting is, for most IPCs, life is oftentimes brutal, unforgiving, and bleak. This can vary dramatically depending on origin, but provides you a baseline for what to expect most characters will endure. It is the absolute minority that handlers/owners of owned units will treat them well, grant them freedom, or leave them any substantial assets. Even in instances where this is possible, the legal and financial systems are designed to extract wealth from organics as is, let alone an IPC. Whether your character is corporate, private, or self owned, consider what it means to lead a life as any in the harshness of the Spur as their lives are often defined by struggle. As alluded to in my first suggestion the personality of an IPC is shaped by their experiences. Exploring who they are, what they want, where they would like to go, how they resolve their situations, anything that paints a picture in their backstory of what kind of person they are. Yes, they are machines in a sense, but still possess the capacity of sapience and evolving person hood. Writing a character who's backstory reads as a sequence of chronological events that lead them to the SCCV Horizon does not appropriately convey this character as a living entity in the setting. Specifically for IPCs, a synthetic that simply works then was transferred or purchased by an individual/company to end up on the ship is not acceptable for an application characters. When creating events or incidents in a backstory, try to ensure they appear grounded, reasonable, and realistic according to established lore. Details should support and connect a reader with understanding why it happened the way it did, what it lead to, and how it affected the character - either directly stated or indirectly inferred. Example: A character that lived through Silicon Nightmares on Konyang will have a unique perspective on the rampancy, it will change their views, and could significantly alter their path. Review your rough drafts for grammar corrections, spelling mistakes, proper capitalization, etc. I understand English is not always someone's first language, which is why its important to practice, peer review, and learn as part of improving. We don't deny anyone based on this alone, but why not encourage a new writer to practice? Some specific suggestions: It helps to keep it simple for the sake of demonstrating you understand the lore and are able to make a grounded character in it. Try a mega corporation as an exercise to tie-in your character better to the setting. Acronyms should, ideally, mean something. Otherwise, leave it as a name. There are examples of this in some of our accepted WL apps. IPCs are not named by co-workers, but assigned a name/identification once assembled and activated by their owner. A nickname at work, however, is reasonable. Please remember that the questions of how recent events impacted your character and how they view the megacorporation they work for are intended to be answered, not stated there was no impact. The setting is predominantly a corporate dystopia where these companies play a substantial role in most people's lives. The server has completed numerous arcs throughout the years that have changed the landscape of the Spur with many applicable to IPCs as well. Not every backstory will be directly exposed, but many can be affected indirectly. Best of luck with your future application.
