General Whitelist Requirements

What colour do you plan on making your first alien character?: Green.

Have you read the lore pages for the species you wish to be whitelisted for?: Yes.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this species?:

Up until recently, I really hadn't engaged much with skrell lore on the server. I read some of it on a whim and it clicked with me, so now I want to try out some new character concepts.

What makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a human?:

Skrell are shorter, moister, and more brightly colored than humans. Their faces aren’t very expressive so determining a skrell’s mood requires the interpretation of body language, headtail movement, and accompanying sounds. They have a unique psionic sensitivity that both bonds them to other skrell and makes them vulnerable to surveillance and manipulation by Federation authorities. Skrell live a lot longer than humans and possess a correspondingly far-sighted worldview.

Culturally, skrell have no concept of gender. Their sense of humor is absurdist and doesn’t always align with their human coworkers. They have a strong sense of community that’s reflected in every aspect of their central state, the Nralakk Federation. Due to events in their past, their opinions on artificial intelligence range from skepticism to antagonism. As one ventures farther from Qerrbalak, more opportunities open for skrell to hold opinions and customs outside the norm and, in some rare cases, even develop formal opposition to the government.

Character Application

Character Name: Xawla Qurett

Write a backstory for your character. This may include their origin, education, personality and how they arrived to the SCCV Horizon.

Xawla Qurett was born in Fedas’qlip, Aliose, in 2403, to a five-member Xiialt Quya. The Quya consisted of local medical professionals, all secondaries, with a dozen depth college degrees between them. All five were unified in providing their child with the best education possible, in keeping with Qeblak traditions. A receiver according to their psionic capability exam, Xawla displayed moderate signs of psionic proficiency, scoring in the second quartile for their region. Despite rigorous attention from their Qrri’Myaq, a surgeon, Xawla did not show any particular affinity for the sciences. Throughout scuttle schooling and reefgarden, they received slightly above average scores, a result of diligence and brute force studying than anything else.

Xawla enrolled at the Hoq’tola’zlip Municipal University to study medicine in 2453. Well-regarded as an arts college, its scientific output was marginalized compared to the Aliose University of Medical Sciences and similar institutions. Despite limited scientific ability, Xawla felt immense pressure from their surroundings to pursue a scientific field. Their Qrri’Myaq and Qrra’Myaq were all medical professionals, as were many members of their local Qeblak observatory. The planet of Aliose itself specialized in medicine and research, leaving a strong psionic imprint on Xawla’s ambitions. Their grit and determination was only sufficient to score below the average in many courses, making their decade in depth college a stressful period in their life. Resisting the temptation to accept failure and drop out as some of their Weishii colleagues did, Xawla renewed their effort and did eventually complete a degree in early 2463.

It became clear by the end of Xawla’s studies that another degree was not in the cards for them. They wanted to work as a physician like their Qrri’Myaq despite harsh competition with candidates that possessed multiple degrees and higher scores. They eventually found work as a laboratory technician for Ziip’Ta Medicinal, subordinating themselves to several former schoolmates with better academic pedigrees. This work continued for five years, as Xawla stewed in their failure to meet their own exacting standards. However, their precision and dedication to their work attracted the attention of a supervisor, who provided career guidance to accomplish their ambitions. As a degree-holder in medicine, Xawla could find opportunities in human space, where competition was not so fierce and all Federation colleges were well-respected. Through the Work Initiative Program, they partnered with Zeng-Hu Pharmaceuticals to become a physician aboard the SCCV Horizon, allowing Xawla another opportunity to prove themselves in a lower-pressure environment.

As a sensitive receiver, Xawla is heavily influenced by Nralakk superculture. Their SCI of 5.74 reflects a general adherence to Federation norms and has potential for growth given Xawla’s youth. Like other followers of Qeblak, Xawla is an amateur stargazer, using their weekly observatory hours to both network with neighbors and ponder their place within the wider galaxy. They view their own status in the Federation as testament to Qeblak values (diligence, patience, and studiousness). In their free time, Xawla reads, tends to their household dyn garden, and snuggles with their pet sqamp, Florp. They are an avid fan of Seaside Shuffle, viewing it as a natural complement to Xawla’s own desire for self-improvement.

Politically, Xawla is a federalist and unilaterally supports the Nralakk Federation’s current policy platforms. They’re active in neighborhood improvement projects sponsored by their ward council and gained local acclaim in 2462 by organizing a food drive for Martian arcologies affected by Violet Dawn (although the residents of Red Gaia apparently didn’t enjoy Xawla’s lortl). They have a typical Qeblak superiority complex, viewing followers of Weishii as slackers and dismissing Suur’ka and Kir’gul as subversive ideologies. Xawla looks forward to the further integration of Hive C’thur as a supplemental labor force of the Federation, despite viewing the use of Bound Vaurcae as eerily similar to synthetic labor. Likewise, Xawla is accepting of the Xrim Covenant and Conglomerated Choir of Nralakk and is generally appreciative of their efforts to adapt to skrell culture. It’s worth noting that Xawla has never actually met a Vaurca, given that they only comprise .08% of Aliose’s population.

How have the recent events of the Orion Spur impacted your character? Events such as the Phoron Scarcity, the Solarian Collapse or even the Invasions of Biesel for interstellar-wide affairs, while region-specific events such as the Peacekeeper Mandate, The Titan Rises or even Cold Dawn may impact your character.

As a Secondary, Xawla has recently lost access to government-issued youth serum due to the Phoron Scarcity. Despite their youth, they still worry that the loss could be emblematic of a larger shift in Nralakk quality of life. Restricted travel, reduced patrols, and a general decline in economic output contribute to a sense of pessimism that grapples with the government consensus that such restrictions are temporary. A recent renewal of cooperation between Nralakk and Biesel appears promising, however, for Xawla’s place in the Work Initiative Programme. If they elect to pursue the WIP as a long-term career, a greater amount of funding for Nralakk-Biesel partnership programs would increase the amount of positions available and hopefully, provide opportunities for promotion.

How does your character view the megacorporation they work for?

Xawla holds a favorable opinion of Zeng-Hu Pharmaceuticals as the megacorporation most closely linked to the Nralakk Federation. Over a century of cooperation has brought the two entities close together, and Zeng-Hu’s focus on scientific purity has proved appealing to Xawla’s Qeblak sensibilities. However, Xawla disapproves of Bishop Cybernetics due to its position as an IPC manufacturer and is reluctant to cooperate with the company on any future projects.
