MintyGums Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 BYOND Key: MintyGums Character Names: Vince Jesse, Susanna Fraser Species you are applying to play: Dionaea What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): N/A Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes, a few times over. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I really like how dionaea function, and how intricate their social structure is. The fact that they merge and split, form new bodies, and have a greater capacity for knowledge (by growing in numbers) is really interesting to me. I also really like how different they are from normal human biology, and how they are not well understood. In real life, I find plants pretty interesting and really like how Dionaea are based on plants but also a completely original species. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The main difference is their biology, and how that impacts their speech, especially if they aren’t familiar with human social norms. They might use ‘we’ instead of ‘I’, they are also slower, and can elongate vowels and use ellipses in speech to show that. Their slow speech provides an excuse for my slow typing speed (bonus!) They have no need to eat, drink, breathe, etc. and won’t spend free time to do those. They treat each nymph as an individual, but also each group of connected nymphs as an individual, which will confuse humans they communicate with. Character Name: Whispering Of The Men Heard From Afar By The Lone Nymph In The Metal Tunnels And The Spark Of Affinity For Vegetation (abbreviation: Whispering Of The Vegetation) Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Slithering out of their pod, a lone nymph observes its surroundings. Hydroponic growing chambers. Two dozen tentacle people, lying silent on the white, sterile floor. A monitoring console, showing an red alert in an unusual language. The nymph rustled, wondering if any other Diona were around. They got no response. The nymph saw a body that was barely alive, with holes in its lower torso and legs. The head rose up, eyeing the nymph and saying an indistinguishable sentence in Skrellian. The nymph took a bit of blood, and started to understand what the Skrell was saying. They followed the orders of the Skrell, albeit with some complications, and eventually helped the Skrell to get up and function. The Skrell was depressed at the fact his colleagues had died, and had only a single nymph, staring blankly and unable to speak back, to accompany him. A few days had passed, and the Skrell has decided to try to teach the nymph a couple of things about his life. He started with his job and where they were. He told of the Dionaea and xenobotanical research ship, one with a similar design to many other small research ships with various purposes, owned by the Jargon Federation. He said that they had been studying plant genetics and the effect of different energy sources on the behavior of Dionaea. This particular nymph was part of the heavy radiation group, and grew healthy and strong. They were shown how the consoles function, the growth of plants, and taught genetics and biology. The two started to use paper to write in Skrellian messages and illustrate ideas to each other, so that the nymph would be able to communicate thoughts back. A few weeks went by, and another nymph had emerged. Suddenly, an alarm went off! A fire was detected near the main entrance airlocks, and the Skrell was terrified. People were banging on the doors, and a few consecutive explosions were heard. Thinking quickly, the skrell hid in maintenance and hid the two nymphs in a nearby ventilation duct. Peeking through the vent's dampers, they observed a group of Vox and Humans rush into the labs and take a hefty amount of chemicals, hack into many scientists’ bank accounts, and trash the place even more. This happened every few weeks, each time the raiders took as much as they could back. Today, Whispering Of The Vegetation calls this an attack on their Skrell partner, and tend to be scared around humans and especially wary around Vox. They also learned to hide during this, and the Skrell told them that it was always best to run rather than fight. The Jargon Federation considered all of the ship’s crew deceased. The ship’s communications had been destroyed, but the Skrell attempted to send a small range emergency distress call, hoping for a response. Flash forward 18 years, the Skrell has died. Passing from old age, they lived a long lifespan of 342 years. The Diona has also grown into a worker, named [see above] composed of 5 nymphs! Finally the distress call was answered. It was a small NanoTrasen vessel, with about 15 humans aboard. They took the worker in; initially the gestalt tried to hide, but a flute was able to calm them down enough to come with the humans. They used a universal recorder and asked it of its story. Interested in its intelligence, they gave it a standardized knowledge test. It did exceptional, and was transferred to the NanoTrasen High Academy. They studied science and language for 9 years, getting their PhD in plant science, and had grown another nymph. A month after graduating, they had been recommended to work aboard the NSS Aurora, accepting the job of xenobotanist. Whispering Of The Vegetation has grown in emotional maturity since the hatching of their first nymph. They understand many human ideas, for example, when their Skrell mentor had died, they had not given a single care. By learning from humans, they were able to be remorseful and now think of themselves as indebted to the Jargon Federation for their knowledge. They have always had the desire to fit in somewhere, and are very interested in the Epsilon Ursae Minoris gestalt. Perhaps they may join and share their knowledge with them someday. What do you like about this character? They are awkward and somewhat quiet around others, usually only communicating internally and observing from afar. They also have a pretty interesting backstory of working their way up to a job, and they were raised by a single Skrell. They are used to being isolated and know a variety of languages including Skrellian(they can’t speak it), Tau Ceti Basic, and, of course, Rootspeak. They have 3 dedicated movement nymphs, 2 thought-focused nymphs, with one of them specializing in empathy and communication, while the other is more logically inclined, and one nymph mostly focused on metabolism. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I’d say about a 7 and a half on a scale of 1 to 10. I am new, but learn quickly and speak in a sort of natural way, using punctuation, ellipses, etc. I need to work on acting realistically, but I guess that will come with practice. Notes: My backstory is somewhat long, I can provide a tl/dr if needed. This will also probably be my first character.
Elohi Adanvdo Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Hello, Minty! I see you're rather new to the community, so let me welcome you to Aurora! I'm glad to see you're enthusiastic to become a part of the community and becoming further involved by chosing to go for a Diona application, no less! And right off the bat, I can tell you're pretty dedicated and a good writer. There's no need to give a tl;dr version- this shows that you've put in a lot of thought into your character, and just how much it's more or less grown on you. And clearly, you've spent the time to read their lore. You have good writing, and I really like how the Dionae would be showing apprehension and caution towards others- it's a rarer sight to see for one to act anything other than passive and calm externally. However, there's some trouble with the backstory, namely the trouble itself: there's far too much violence for it to be realistic in Aurora-lore. To keep it short, there's no way the station would survive that many attacks and yet still somehow be a target again and again in the future, and zero chance for the surviving Skrell to be able to live. We try to keep all antagonistic encounters to a minimum. Also, I have yet to correct in the wiki in how Diona grow, their need to eat, and languages they can mechanically access in-game, but I will explain here until then: A single nymph cannot sprout another unless it was through a seed, in which each form of Diona will release only one a year. Otherwise, planets would be overpopulated by Dionaea, and that poses a massive problem with their need to eat, which they do actually have. They also can't heal or move well without- to be able to heal faster, more energy than what is processed by the light is needed. And sadly, as a mechanic, you won't be able to hear or speak the Skrellian language with the code as it stands now (however, that may be fixed). And lastly, your account is rather new- too new, to the point where no one really knows you and can provide any feedback to as of who you are as a player, so despite your good writing, I'm going to have to decline your application for now. But there's an easy fix- I'd like for you to take a week and a half, maybe two weeks (or longer if you'd like), to play in-game and build a reputation with the community. During that time, fix up your story to something that's a bit more lore-friendly and acceptable to the Aurora-verse, and re-submit it when the time comes. And to help get those reviews make sure to advertise your application by posting a link to it in OOC channels and maybe in our Discord. Don't forget to say what the link is for- not a lot of pepple are willing to click a random link. An of course, don't be afraid to contact me for any questions and the like. Hope to see you re-apply when the time comes! Application declined. PS- I love the long name it has and how they have an assimilated name, but it may seem a little too cliche to others with "Vegitation" at the end. Don't be afraid to get more creative if you'd like- abstract names do very well to keep up their mystique, and the word can be replaced with the growth, green, flora, or even more abstract: the patient ones. It's not necissarily a problem, but it would make it more unique if you'd like!
