Species you are applying to play: Tajara

------------------------------ General Whitelist Requirements

What colour do you plan on making your first alien character?: #8a360f (Ruddy)

Have you read the lore pages for the species you wish to be whitelisted for?: So I have.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this species?:
Well, three reasons,

  1. This one is weird, but the S'rand'marr sector lobby music. That was what planted the first seeds of interest. I know it was not made purpose-made for Aurora, but it complimented my, by then, very basic mental image of a species with an incredible amount of potential doomed to its current situation by fratricidal wars, and corporate exploitation, further motivated by selfish rulers, putting up a facade of caring for their people.
  2. The lore, while admittedly slightly too referential of 20th century European totalitarian governments, mainly (but not entirely) the Warsaw Pact, it has taken my interest anyway. The politics, the religions, and the lore and interactions between the three states, have gotten me slightly hooked.
  3. Last but not least, the history of the pre-contact nobles. I just find a group of people who lived through such a massive social upheaval extremely interesting, and how the few that survived have to battle with the fact that their time is running out, no matter what they do.

What makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a human?:
I can say that a very in-your-face trait of Tajara is them speaking in third person. But saying only that is not enough. The other important things are the ethnicities, and how the three states view them, how they view taboos of marrying between ethnicities, and how the ethnicities should know their place, because they were born to fulfill a role. The body language, The very apparent tensions between the PRA, DPRA, and the NKA. And my favorite, the entrance of a young, war-torn race to the politics of the Spur, and their subsequent exploitation by all (well, most) of the corporations.

------------------------------ Character Application

Character Name: Mahaii'zurmagal Dirmaar'Jarihaad

Write a backstory for your character. This may include their origin, education, personality and how they arrived to the SCCV Horizon.

Woe, a 1000+ word backstory upon ye

Mahaii'zurmagal Dirmaar'Jarihaad was born in 2410, in the east of the Azumah Lake, in the Duchy of Dolor. The Dirmaar'Jarihaad were a small Njarir'Akhran noble family, locally respected as a pillar of culture and order. To peasants, they were tyrants, infamous for hosting particularly cruel groups of M'sai enforcers. Mahaii was the youngest child, and the first son of Dirmaar family. From his earliest years, Mahaii was rigorously taught local history, law, music, culture, art, and many others. His mother Sarruhnifa taught him S'rendarr and Messa worship; his father Rahzimahuzarrmal, how to manage a realm.

It all changed when Sarruhnifa died abruptly in 2419. While officially she died of an illness, rumors of an assassination spread. Rahzimahuzarrmal did not take it well, withering into a paranoid drunk, that often took his anger out at his own children, and as the youngest and least able to defend himself, Mahaii was often the target. After that, the young Njarir became withdrawn, quiet, cautious, he took solace in the faith his mother taught him. He started avoid confrontations with his father, he started avoiding touch. But he bore it all in silence, out of familial loyalty, or out of pride to his heritage. But he never stopped holding respect for his father.

Nothing could prepare Adhomai for what started in 2421. Still, until 2425, the realm held, and Mahaii's education continued mostly uninterrupted. In those years, the young Mahaii often accompanied his father to to oversee the pacification campaigns perpetrated by his family's M'sai enforcers. These, he was told, were necessary for keeping the order, and the authority of the family. Rahzimahuzarrmal, in his periods of lucidity, was not a merciful leader, nor a hesitant one. This calm, ordered brutality, left an impression on the young noble. When he dared to ask questions, he made sure to remember the answers.

But when the city of Dolor fell the Dirmaar briefly fled north, to the Kingdom, while the adult men remained behind. By 2428, things were looking up, and Mahaii was sent to aid the siege of his liege's capital, which fell a year later. The victory was short lived, the following blitz by the rebel fleet shattered the momentum, and all chances of victory. But by 2432 all remaining hope was lost. The Hadiists, having entered the Kingdom of Kaltir, have found the refuge of the Dirmaar. That day was a blur, but Mahaii managed to escape. After weeks of wandering, starved and without direction, he began seeking out any remaining cells of royalist support. He took on a new identity, that of noble disinherited for his support of the Hadii cause, and made his way to Kaltir, to find anyone to help. There, he found quiet work as a librarian, replacing the one who had mysteriously disappeared not long before. Officially, they drowned. A shame.

There he labored, in quiet, for fifteen years, known as a calm, withdrawn but generally kind, and most importantly a good replacement for the last librarian. His noble education served him well; he might have even enjoyed his work in a different life, but in this one, he resented it. By night, he met with royalist groups plotting the return of king Vahzirthaamro. It couldn't last. In 2450, he and his circle was arrested by the People's Strategic Intelligence Service. Though brief, the imprisonment left marks he would never forget.

Broken out in 2451, he immediately joined the newly-formed Imperial Adhomian Army as an Alam'ardii officer. There, he fought a bitter, defensive war. He taught his men to have no mercy, just as his father taught him. But he didn't see the war's end with his own eyes. Wounded in 2459, he stayed in a hospital in Kaltir until the Armistice. His only solace during the stay there was news that his sister survived.

After the armistice, now as a decorated veteran, he withdrew, and spent a quiet year in the rural estate gifted to him by the King. He made some Njarir friends, he went on spending sprees, he spent time with his sister, her husband, and their children. Fitting reward, but he found himself growing restless. Peace did not suit him. He spent months idly, attempting to find a hobby, reading texts in Tau Ceti Basic, and various pieces of revived Ya'ssa literature, useful, but his fascination faded quickly. At 51, he was not yet ready to fade into the life of a peacetime noble, he wanted to fly.

Rather than to invest his own, not especially impressive wealth, he rode around the streets of Kaltir, watching new buildings being raised. Reconstruction makes sense, and was expected after a war, though, some were not staffed by locals, but by humans. Idris Incorporated the signs said in Tau Ceti Basic, maybe the hobby was not a waste of time after all. He went inside, weathered, in his new noble clothes. At the desk, he requested a loan, that is all he knew about the human corporation. A Hharar sat in the booth.

“What is the loan for?” they asked.

“He wishes to fund a pilot's license” he responded.

The Hharar hesitated, turned to a terminal and pressed a button, shortly after, a door at the far end of a room has opened. A human, in an exquisite dark suit and a teal tie. He had a smile of someone who knew more than they should. They extended a handshake, Mahaii flinched and folded his ears back, and did not take it. Mahaii asked if they can help him. The man said they can do a lot more than that, under one condition...

He returned to his estate, only to arrange things. He nominated his sister as a steward of the estate in his absence. To those who asked, he just said he is going to see how things are outside Adhomai, now that he was no longer needed.

The man did not lie, it was a lot more. Having started his corporate “vacation”, the following months, then years, passed in a steady blur. He was trained as a pilot, in exchange for a contract, and reduced salary. At first, he was assigned to the service division, then, he was moved to the security one. His job was simple: transport and escort. Mahaii excelled, and requested new certifications constantly, petitioned for licenses for larger ships. Though, while not exceptional, he was reliable and respected by his wealthier colleagues, and appreciated quietly by his superiors. He enjoyed his work, until one day, in a meeting regarding his licenses, his supervisor paused, and the tone shifted.

“Tell me” he started, “have you heard of… the Horizon? Large vessel. A cruiser. I've been considering of making a recommendation to the Conglomerate. Not as a Captain due to… protocol, I trust you understand, but it would a waste to assign you as standard bridge crew. What about the an Executive Officer, hm? Not official yet, but I think it will be soon.”

And so, Mahaii got his cruiser license, and a recommendation to the Chainlink. The SCCV Horizon? He'll take it.

How has the recent events of the Orion Spur impacted your character? Events such as the Phoron Scarcity, the Solarian Collapse or even the Invasions of Biesel for interstellar-wide affairs, while region-specific events such as the Peacekeeper Mandate, The Titan Rises or even Cold Dawn may impact your character.

The wider events, like the Phoron Scarcity and the Solarian Collapse did not affect Mahaii at all, on the surface at least. Though, getting hired by Idris may have been motivated by the corporation plugging holes of the now less available Solarian populations. But, the influence of the both the revolutions has clearly taken a toll on Mahaii, considering he took part in both of them. Losing most of his family in the first one, and having to bite his tongue and work as a librarian for almost 20 years before the second one started, getting arrested, possibly tortured, broken out by the new NKA, and getting wounded, resulting in Mahaii missing most of the latter part of the war.

How does your character view the megacorporation they work for?

I think Mahaii is very fond of Idris Incorporated, as a noble he of course enjoys the finer things in life, and they gave an old Njarir'Akhran a chance to see the wider Spur, alongside his piloting license. So, when it comes to Idris? Very positive. But, as an Executive Officer, they work for the SCC, which they do not hold view as positively as Idris. But the dislike is less motivated by overall dislike of corporations, and more by the SCC being friendly with the PRA, which they invest plenty of credits into. So, when it comes to the SCC? Neutral, but definitely leaning positive, while holding a few personal grudges that are hard to act upon.

I hope you enjoyed reading my application as much as enjoyed writing it.

Thank you for applying! I have just a few questions.

There, he found quiet work as a librarian

1. How did Mahaii feel about the public perception of literature, which had soured post revolution? How did this affect their job?

2. What is Mahaii's views of the DPRA and PRA?

3. What school of Royalist thought do they subscribe to?

As a noble, he was literate from his earliest years, and the education his parents bestowed upon him made him read a lot, which during his job as a librarian he continued reading. He attempted to save some books, which he smuggled out to the various royalist-supporting circles, but also helped to maintain his cover, by turning up to rebel gatherings, and burning the less important books. Uninteresting novels, manuals, ledgers, a religious book or two, things that the illiterate rebels would cheer for, and leave him alone as one of the good ones, saying he is keeping the books about the decadence of the nobles safely hidden away, to possibly teach the younger generations about the cruelty of the deposed.

2. What is Mahaii's views of the DPRA and PRA?

Mahaii is, unsurprisingly, vehemently against the PRA and all it stands for. A terrorist empire ruled by a honorless noble family who betrayed the old order for a chance of power, and forced a bloodlust against the past upon the peasants. He views the Hadiis and their "Republic" as the evil that, if not directly, contributed to getting his family killed, and for turning his life upside down. He has no reason to show any respect to Hadii and their followers, though, he learned to control his opinions well during his time in Idris, and now the SCC.

For the DPRA I think he would hold a more nuanced opinion. It is also a state that is, at least in part, somewhat divorced from the ideas of the PRA’s Hadiism, while still clearly a state based on some of its ideas. Still, he also views it as yet another rogue, illegitimate state, that was founded and continued on stolen noble land, and a state that endeavours to break the traditional ethnic caste system. He holds some very faint, begrudging respect for the state, that helped to relieve the Kingdom of fighting the PRA, by fighting the PRA themselves, while keeping in mind that they also put down the royalist uprising on Amohda. Ultimately, he hopes that they remain weak with the ALA and civilian government infighting continuing, or that the civilian government takes over completely, and enters into a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" alliance with the Kingdom.

3. What school of Royalist thought do they subscribe to?

Mahaii would subscribe most to the Conservative royalist school of thought, which was motivated by his time defending the new Kingdom. There he saw how both nobles, and commoners, were fighting for a common cause against the terrorist PRA regime that ruled Harr’masir. However, his father taught him much about culture and politics before revolution times, so he upholds what he was taught, and is partial to the Revivalist school of thought, though he’s not that of a fanatic about it. Namely, he cares about maintaining the rule of the Njarir’Akhran, and maintaining the caste system, but disagreeing with the stance on the alien influences. He is wary of giving the corporations too much influence, but removing them outright is not the way forward.

He would be against the Absolutist and Populist schools, believing that the current state of affairs should continue, relatively uninterrupted. He does however believe that strengthening the military is always a good idea.
