[Accepted] ArcBot's Vaurca Application

BYOND Key: ArcBot

Character Names: Jack Davidson, Jessica Brooks

Species you are applying to play: I'm applying to play the Vaurca species.

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt):Hmm, I'm not entirely sure, maybe a dark grey.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes while I was reading the other species lore.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: I have a few reasons I chose Vaurca for my first alien whitelist application. The main being that I would like to expand my room to roleplay a wider variety of species over time and this one seems so under utilized. I specifically like how you can play as bound or unbound, each having differences in the way you can roleplay the species. I also enjoy the fact they don't need a suit to go EVA, since my character is going to be an xenoarcheologist/anomalist.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: You're an insect species based from the first moon of Sedantis I. Their main diet relying on their own genetically engineered fungus they grow. They also have mandibles which can be used as a means of self defense should you ever find yourself in harms way of an attacker. The speaking like a Vaurca is also a main difference in roleplay, since they are new to speaking Basic Tau Ceti.

Character Name: Ka'Akaix'Keno Zo'ra

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs:When Ka'Akaix'Keno Zo'ra was removed from his VR paradise, he had a very hard time adjusting, taking months to get use to it and start socializing with humans. When he finally did make the full transition and left his hive for Biesel, he had to start working on the NSS Exodus to cover his housing costs. His first day he was assigned as a lab assistant to an xenoarcheologist, running errands, and learning along the way. After working for a few months on the outpost, getting better at speaking Basic Ka'Akaix'Keno Zo'ra was ready for a new job in the science department which interacted with the human crew more often.

That's when he decided to become a lab assistant for a scientist, who operated Research and Development. He was mainly the receptionist taking orders, and making sure no contraband is handed out. During quiet shifts is when he learned to deconstruct and upgrade items and machines around the station from his mentor. Never forgetting about his hive, sending them any new knowledge he's learned along the way through the Network.

What do you like about this character? Hmm, well I like that this character would be an unbound Vaurca, and a scientist who focuses on RnD and Xenoarcheology. I also enjoy that he doesn't actually live with his hive, rather in Biesel on the promise of housing as long as he worked on the NSS Exodus.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? I would rate my roleplaying good but needing some improvement.

As a player who usually plays Research, Tom and Jacky are cool cats to play with. From my experience with RPing with ArcBot's characters is that they are always friendly (to my character atleast) and always active in working inside their department, making them reasonably competent. I have no objections to them getting a Vaurca whitelist.

I'll give you an honest opinion, because Im an honest guy.

Arcbot continues to entertain, enjoy, expand, and make Science as entertaining as the player for Pal-Os. There is very little reason to keep me in the Research department

Onto the App itself

This app is vastly superior to my own, and I know literally nothing extremely important on vaurca, even after playing on. This race is still pretty foreign to my RP skills, but man.. They are fun. Literally would like to have more Zo'ra pride on the server, and see what kind of RP we can get.

Jack Davidson was a really fun vampire in a round i observed yesterday. Kept evading security and leading them on a fantastic chase around the station, stole all the medkits in medical while several people were in the lobby just out of vision

He made the round interesting and fun, I approve, +1

Hi. I actually read the app. Try not to hold that against me.

This character is implausible.

fter working for a few years on the outpost, getting better at speaking Basic Ka'Akaix'Keno Zo'ra was ready for a new job in the science department which interacted with the human crew more often.

First contact with the Vaurca was during very late December of 2456. This means that even if he was fast-tracked, hand waved, and immediately ready to work, he still would not have been able to start work with NanoTrasen until a good ways into 2457. It is currently 2458.

What's more, xenoarcheology requires a doctorate and other such hoops and occupation qualifications for any aspiring scientist to meet. Your character is effectively "fresh off the intergalactic boat" at this point.

Your answers to the questionnaire, while not bad, leave something to be desired.

I also enjoy the fact they don't need a suit to go EVA, since my character is going to be an xenoarcheologist/anomalist.

I already adressed the issue of occupation, but I fully believe that you're a fan of this race because of its resistance to pressure changes. It's sort of the mechanic pull-factor of this race.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes while I was reading the other species lore.
Maybe you should have spent a little more time reading up on the race you're applying for. It's good that you read up on the races and I hope you enjoyed them, but one ought to double check details on anything they apply for on the off chance that a crucial detail was ignored or missed.
I also enjoy that he doesn't actually live with his hive, rather in Biesel on the promise of housing as long as he worked on the NSS Exodus.
Pretty much all of the Vaurca in human space live in the Republic of Biesel. I do like that you included the theme of Vaurca being effectively forced to work for NanoTrasen as a means of repaying Tau Ceti for letting them "just crash on our couch for a while".

Next, you had another applications quite recently for a Head of Staff position. I know it can be tempting to want to rush in and get a new app done when one gets denied, but I feel like it hasn't been long enough for us to see a major difference in your play-style yet. It's not necessarily a bad thing that this app was close on its heels, but it has me a little miffed.

You may remember that I left some feedback on that app that essentially said I think you've got the capacity to improve. You're not terrible and you're not a lost cause. In fact, I believe I downright enjoyed Tom during the one round in which I remember interacting with him.

Sadly, I don't have enough experience (relentlessly stalking you) with your RP to give a one up. And that little detail that makes this character implausible makes me unable to give a soft plush one on the application's merits.

As it stands, I -1 but still believe you have the potential for greatness down the line. I've just yet to see your montage into greatness. Also please forgive me for saying nice things about you and then putting a minus one.

As for the years, yes sorry I get it mixed up all the time, maybe I can switch it to after six months or maybe even four?

As for the working as an xenoarcheologist, I stated I was a Lab Assistant to one, is that not alright?

Edit: Also my head of staff application was not denied, re-read the final post saying it was closed at my Request because I wanted to make a completely new character who wasn't disrespectful and didn't help his co-workers.

This is good! I can't speak for everyone, but I know I appreciate the idea of writing up a new character for Head of Staff. Solid logically and it lets the player scratch that "character work" itch one tends to feel. I saw Tom just a bit and he seemed colorful, but not hostile or disruptive. I bet your new guy'll be fun.

That's totally cool. It's not quite the years of experience he had in the original draft, but it's a fair amount of time given the situation the species is in.

As in, did your Vaurca adjust to the world universe outside of VR, learn about the local language, begin studying science, and earn a doctorate to be come a xenoarcheologist in a couple months? If that's your question, then nah. That's asking a bit much from the "fish out of water".

Oh, I thought lab assistants is what you do if you don't have education but want to learn in that field. That's the reason I stated it, otherwise how else would I be able to play a Vaurca in research if they only were discovered by humans 2 years ago, and a PhD takes much longer then that to aquire.

Playing Unbound

They can either be unique individuals having spent time out of their Virtual Reality for some time, or can be similar to drones; fresh off a hive and from their VR, barely knowing anything.

Sorry, m80. I read the question as "can is be xenyoark beclaws lab assistiante extraordinaire b4 but now am doctor!" not "Is working in the field at an introductory level a plausible alternative? I do believe lab assistant work may serve him quite well considering the shortened timeframe."

If you mean labwork, then yeppers. I could wrap my head around the idea of a very dedicated Vaurca getting into science. Lab assistant work is slightly less difficult to get into than Xenoarcheology.

That's pretty slick, isn't it? Sounds like your drafted story has become more of a "look ahead" for the Vaurca. Rather than being at the end of his character arc, he's relatively close to the beginning. This is sounding excitingly close to montage material!

-snip!

I edited the backstory of OP, does it seem more realistic now? It's what I'll keep it as until the app's decision is made.

I added a new character to my characters list. I made her today, she's an engineering apprentice named Jessica.

Hello!

As it stands, Vaurca are not blank, dumb slates that are barred from science positions until 2021 IRL time to give them necessary time to gain qualifications. Many species' have different qualifications and educational standards. Vaurca could have been scientists on the Hiveships or be trained in VR by its programming to be a scientist, and you have to remember that Vaurca can also share and consolidate information from any other Vaurca in the hive with their hivemind network. A Vaurca could feasibly be a lab intern to a xenoarchaeologist, then return to the hive to spend a few months "Downloading" information from hundreds or thousands of other Vaurca on how to be a genuine Xenoarchaelogist. (That is not saying that they can possess a bunch of different specialized qualifications and job-hop like a Skrell can. Vaurca can gain qualifications very quickly but they're expected to stick to a job or field like anyone else.)

I have always looked over such things if the character is at a level that it's reasonable to say they could pass a big placement test at a university when they apply that they could ace and be given an instant diploma, as it were. And Xenoarchaelogy is a very abstract field, with the mechanical and technical sides something you more learn in the field - which is something a lab assistant to a xenoarchaelogist would be doing!

The character is reasonable to me, with these presumed changes (I didn't see the previous version) and you show a willingness to adjust and adapt your character to better fit expectations and improve yourself. I feel you've satisfied concerns Loow brought up enough for me to trust you with a Vaurca whitelist.
