[Accepted] Xaldin8's Unathi Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Xaldin8

Character Names: Anhara Mizashi

Species you are applying to play: Unathi

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Earthen brown

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: I have various experience previously roleplaying an Unathi, and remember them fondly. Furthermore, I intended to use this species as a method to re-establish an older character that I had built up on a lost server. Of my observations of the Aurora and Exodus station, the reigning species and most common is human, and feel that I could add to diversity of the station and the community of this species. I also feel that this species is under-displayed and not portrayed to the fullest extent of their power.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: As I understand it, While the culture of the Unathi is inherently different, as they evolved in a different environment far from Sol, they do have small behavioral links to humans, such as their usage of an honour system. However, humans phased this out centuries ago in order to expand socially and economically, finding it illogical. Unathi uphold an honour system that typically supports their social interactions, and are known to almost show some form of ownership of their females, whether it be those within their clan, or those bound by marriage. In theory, this can extend all the way to being treated as property, clearly expressing that the males of the species are socially seen as superior, but the extent of their dominance can be perceived as a little vague, as while women are seen as property, the mistreatment of one is implied as an act of dishonour against their clan. Unathi would be expected to use certain formal mannerisms that may be almost absurd to some humans, typically reserving physical interaction to the most intimate of companions or out of a failure to uphold honour. They also can differ greatly from Humans as their culture is upheld vocally and shared in this method, whereas humans commonly log their history and tradition in text to preserve for descendants.

Character Name: Sr'Rethran Maoras

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs In the southern border of the central wastes lies a border town, a collection of shanty huts and scrap structures, vaguely resembling a city, with its corroded reds and oranges blurring into the pale and earthly hues of the wasteland. In this solitary town, outlaws, vagrants, and banished attempt to scrape out a meager living. while many of the inhabitants are Guwans and political exiles, a formal clan does reside within this shanty town. While their influence is minor, and barely extends beyond the rusted wall of the last shack in the region, the Maoras were accepted by the majority to be the caretakers of the town, many of them descended from citizens of a once-great city that towered over the now-barren region. In decades past, the Maoras name stood only for a lowly labor man that resided in the fallen city, but as he had survived the atomic weaponry that desecrated his homelands, proved himself to be too stubborn to leave the untouched lands. Instead, he named himself leader of a "Mighty clan of desert-hardened Unathi warriors" and bred his kin. As the contact wars had ended and the rest of Moghes returned to a relatively civilized lifestyle, exiled Guwan began to flock to this fabled city in the barren lands.

His first daughter, Sr’Rethran, was born shortly before the contact war, and faintly remembered it breaking out, and the devastation it caused to the continent. Approximately eight human years during the bombing, she now recalls moments of horror during the conflict; Sr’Rethran has brief memories of people lying in the rubble, buried by the walls that once protected them, and of corpses partially disintegrated by atomic blasts or rotting away after growing sick from intense radiation. She and her father were the luckier ones, who managed to survive the blasts by sheltering in the waterworks beneath the city. Once the bombings ending, she and her father rose from the ashes of the ruins and began to rebuild on the outskirts, preserving what resources they could to rebuild an old structure. For years, this was their life, stripping away what they needed and rebuilding what they could, until the first few Guwans came. In return for shelter, the Guwans swore loyalty to the Maoras name, adopting it for themselves.

But life in the untouched lands is deeper than merely trying to survive in the barren-ness. While food is typically considered scarce, it can be grown or hunted, if one is stubborn enough, but the greatest ordeal is finding and conserving water. Wells worked fine enough to supplement a small clan, but as their numbers grew, the Maoras clan had to find other means to procure it. Eventually, they began to bargain with traders in the fertile land over radio. Valuable scrap, meats, and furs, were traded for water. But eventually, this wouldn’t be enough. Pressured by need and jaded by their lifestyle, The Maoras began to sell some of their own off as slaves. Eventually, even the clan-leader’s firstborn herself would prove to be worth more than the people could resist. Sr’Rethran would exchange hands many times, migrating between transportation corporations eager to find bodies capable of simple work, mining unions willing to take advantage of any able-bodied Unathi they could find, and eventually a slaver that was interested in only the bodies themselves. Sr’Rethran had finally wound up in the hands of Unathi Traffickers that had deemed her body worthy enough to be exploited for the satisfaction of a niche but wealthy clientele. However, she showed ample beligerance and was too rowdy to be handled by clients, prompting her to be beaten often to promote obedience. In the end, this would only cause her to be more uncontrollable, attacking her master and killing him, tearing out his soft throat. For her actions, Sr’Rethran was viciously mauled with heavy chains and slashed with knives. But once the slavers head realized their folly, it was too late, for gruesome scars had already spanned the Unathi’s body, shredding her limbs and pitting her face. After this particularly vehement session of beatings, the masters found little use for her, as clients found her body too appalling to gaze on, let alone touch. Instead of trying to find a further use, they discarded her, selling her off to the next buyer they could find. But unlike the heartless and greedy palms that held her contract before, this time it wound up in the care of a NanoTrasen contractor, who showed some smidgen of heart, promising her true freedom, but not until she paid off the debt NanoTrasen amassed in procuring her 'loyalty'. And so, NanoTrasen did find a use for her, finally finding some formal training to sharpen her ability with machinery and scrap. While her abilities beforehand were only adequate in the barren wastes of Moghes, today, she finds employment on-station as a trained engineer, capable and willing to make sure NanoTrasen property is operating to surgical precision.

Previous entry

After the nuclear warfare sundered Moghes and obliterated most of her family, a very minor and local 'clan' that attempted to control the slums they lived in, Sr'Rethran was one of only a few surviving members. The young Maoras would then be captured by a greedy Unathi who was eager to climb the social ladder, selling her off as a slave to a space faring transportation corporation that frequented the planet. She'd exchange hands a few times, until winding up in the hands of sex slavers. As her masters attempted to sell her to patrons, she expressed belligerence against them and was savagely beaten. In retaliation, she accidentally killed a slavemaster, tearing his throat open with her claws. For this, she was viciously mauled, beaten with heavy chains and cut open with a knife. As heavily scarred property, her remaining masters found no use for her and instead sold her off as a manual laborer. Except this time, she'd end up in the hands of a NanoTrasen contractor, who'd find a use for her onboard one of their stations, performing grunt work in a shady engineering division. Eventually, she'd be free, but not until she paid off the debt NanoTrasen amassed in procuring her 'loyalty'.

What do you like about this character? Sr'Rethran was created as a personal experiment to expand my own ability to handle a character who found communication difficult. Having suffered from intense physical trauma, she found speaking difficult and tiresome, especially common-tongue. Instead, she typically spoke in sign language. Her poor communication skills and her physical repulsion, being heavily scarred, made her into a character that I found myself quite fond of. Further more, I wasn't able to use her often, as the server she was created on died soon after. I'd like to use this opportunity to further expand her.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? While attempting to be modest, I'd say that I'm decently well, having roleplayed in a variety of environments for about five years.

A name I frequently see appearing on OOC. They come off as friendly, coolheaded. Too bad I don't know many of your characters. Sorry. :(

As long as you remember that Aurora lore on Unathi will be different from the past.

Yep, makes sense. This is leaning to the right direction.

Her story is special, I admit. But there seem to be some gaps here and there. When exactly did a slave receive engineering training to get employed as one? Nothing indicates anything regarding previous training, scholarship etc, only that she was a slave and now she's in a debt because she got pulled out of a shithole by a Contracter. Maybe a bit of expansion your backstory would be better.

So finally, I can't give you a +1. BUT I won't -1 you either. If you could expand a little more on your backstory that'd make it seem more legitimate for her to be hired to work on the Exodus then I suppose I could +1 it.

This, I totally understand. I had the application pulled up for hours, slowly remembering the pieces and putting it together. I promised myself I'd make revisions, since it was early in the morning at the time, but I neglected to, which I'll have to be doing now.

"Stay tuned, kids, for the next episode of Ligger Apps 2016!"

Edit: I toyed with the biography a little more, thoroughly expanding it, but I'd be terrified of what an Unathi loremaster would say if I shook a stick at them a little too hard, what with the use of the Wastelands.

Your new biography is solid and I appreciate the work you've put into it. It seems solid to me; Sr'Rethran is rowdy but given her work in engineering and lack of any "and she's consumed by rage and regret" also let me think she'll be a well rounded character instead of a walking emotional time bomb. Acknowledging the flaws and setbacks do leaps and bounds in making a strong character. She just needs a good Unathi man to civilize her into a proper lady, as the legends of Unathi encourage. Application accepted!
