Sleepy's Dionaea Application

BYOND Key: Sleepy Wolf

Character Names: Pearl - Facet Minor 188, Follower - Facet Beta 209, Ka'Akaix'Zah Zo'ra, Ka'Viax'Vag K'lax, Ka'Viax'Zon Zo'ra, Viax'Zor, Viax'Zin, Viax'Zen, etc etc.

Species you are applying to play: Dionaea

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): NA

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

They're asexual plant-like creatures that are curious, calm, and sometimes wise. They're a cluster and refer to themselves as 'We', are reliant on light, and are generally viewed as friendly to most. If I were to create a Diona, I wouldn't react to being called 'Tree' angrily, and all, which I've criticized a few times in other Diona players.

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

Their unique characteristics and uprising into the world, along with the multiple things you could spin off of their lore. A Diona that grew up attached to a clown's shuttle, watching from the windows into the views of laughing kids and balloon animals? A diona that somehow became trapped inside an asteroid and was saved by a miner? A diona that was eaten by a dog, and decided to name the experience 'Mammilian Animal Attacking Us'? Speaking on that, the naming system really speaks to me. Technically, their name could continuously grow into something larger, starting with 'Creation', and then flowing from that, changing its name to 'Creation, Fire, and Warmth,', after it's grown and taken to some humans home, laid in front of a fireplace? I don't know, it's all just /really/ cool.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Dionaea come in one form, nymphs. But - the nymphs can collectively form a larger, structured body - in any shape or form - with any amount of nymphs. They're mainly based off of plants, move slowly, and are often passive. Sensitivity to darkness, and their slower pace, are some things that might be hostile to them.

Character Name: Living Beneath the Creation of Fake Lives

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

We lived in the tunnels and crevices beneath the station, watching from the vents. The heat of the radiators, the light of the luminescent bulbs. We saw everything. A human wearing metal plating over their face, creating fire, and structure, from a metal body. Over days, the structure became humanoid as the human worked tirelessly. The human, apparently nearing completion of his project, seemed to become excited as it moved a final piece into the statue, and then speaking to it. The human waited, continuing to speak to the structure, to no response. In anger, the human became furious, toppling over tables and screaming obscenities we could not understand.

We all agreed we would help.

We came out of the vents, collectively, forming a . The human seemed to be crying, not noticing us. We did not mind them, and moved over to the statue, finally taking a close inspection of it. We did not understand why the human was so mad, the statue seemed very alluring to the senses. We decided to speak.

"It is beaut eee fulll,"

The human looked up from its distraught thought, its eyes red and its skin pale, very much like the statue it created.

Years later, we take over the profession of our first friend. Roboticist.

The statue - an android unit - still stands in the side of the lab on Biesel, completed in the eyes of Us.

What do you like about this character?

What I aim to have is an over-affectionate diona that seeks friendship, wisdom, and creation. They look for the good in everything, especially the incomplete or damaged. Perfection is something unknown to this gestalt, although it always seems to finish the jobs it's assigned - with minimal maintenance required afterwards.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? 10/10, especially in antag-related incidents.

I know Pearl - Facet Minor 188, and from the interactions I've had with them, they've proven to be capable at roleplaying. I believe I've also had interactions with one of their Vaurcas in which the AI I was playing, Big Brother, assembled a "People's Army" to stamp out a slime infestation, and both they and their friend were happy to volunteeer.

This seems slightly out of place for the application, as a question was never asked. I'd shift it into one of the two questions below.

From how I interpret the lore, dionaea are shaped by their experiences, and those experiences are reflected in the name that they choose. Perhaps the most interesting part of dionaea is that they can pop up literally anywhere, from deep space to a barren planet such as Reade, and nobody would know how they got there. There could potentially be unlimited amounts of dionaea clusters awaiting discovery, all with very, very different views on things, and different mannerisms. I'm going off a tangent here, but yes, this is a valid reason as any. Basically saying "interesting" and providing an explanation why is enough.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

I can't exactly make a paragraph on this, since I feel I'd repeat basically /everything/ I've said in the last question. Basically, the possibilities. The various creation methods of the character, and their differences to the other species. They're not lizard-humans, or frog-squid-humans, they're Diona.

Not quite. Dionaea aren't different from humans simply because of their naming convention. Based on what you've said above, anybody who didn't know a thing about lore would believe a Diona was some type of humanoid that named themselves in a special way, and were possibly capable of EVA. You could explain how they walk slowly, how they live off light and are rapidly injured without it (making being trapped inside an asteroid as you said above a definitely fatal situation), how in the future update frost will damage them, but fire (and radiation) will heal them rapidly, how they speak, and so on. You can definitely make a paragraph out of this, especially considering this question alone is the most important question in the whitelist.

In total, the backstory is 236 words, but creates an illusion of largeness due to the extensive spacing used. The issue for me is that this isn't quite a backstory, but feels more like a teaser of something that'd be said in a trailer to a movie, or a game. We never discover who "Living Beyond The Creation Of Fake Lives" is, nor how they act. In fact, roughly half the backstory is focused around the human themselves! There's a hint of them being sympathetic, and that they learn how to operate in a robotics department. You go on to explain what you like about them, but none of this is actually said within the story itself, and the idea that they seek "friendship" seems rather contradictory considering they spent their early life in a ventilation system, and never attempted to socialise with nor contact the humans they were observing.

The other issue is that your diona "watches from the vents. The heat of the radiators, the light of the luminescent bulbs". As explained above, Dionaea are sensitive to darkness, and living in vents simply wouldn't be feasible unless they carried other forms of light than just those that slipped through the shutters fixed over the air shafts.

I feel that you should expand on Living Beyond The Creation Of Fake Lives's thoughts in the story, and integrate parts of the lore into your writing. It doesn't have to be every little weakness or strength, but references to other forms of Dionaea such as Colossuses, nymphs, and a few troubles that the gestalt experienced in comparison to a human.

Overall, I'm going to have to remain neutral, due to the issues highlighted above.

I never like to actually give away my characters backstory fully, and I feel the trailer here is a basis around what you can expect. And, regarding the vents, I mean living right under the vent, right under a light. They'd found the perfect place, and stayed there until they finally decided to move on the situation.

As I understand it, the backstory is to show that you can not only identify the differences between humans and the species you are applying for in the question above, but integrate that into the story as a whole.

Now, you've explained a few differences between the species, but it's still not quite as in-depth as I'd like, but it's getting there. To quote prior applicants:

Dionaea speak... Much slower... Than Humans... They're also the slowest thing EVER. Plus, they identify as multiple organisms and never as as an individual collectively. They're also SUPER MYSTERY SPECIES! (Besides the Vox but no one gets to play them any more ;w;) They're mysterious, intelligent, and experienced. Not much is known about them, except for the humanoid gestalt that are found periodically on the station. They 'eat' radiation, and can survive in space, and absorb experiences and knowledge from biological matter. When they're individuals (diona aka PLANT PUPPIES!!1! :D ), they act and identify separately, but the core node (the 'brains') are still in charge... Somewhat.

Diona are slow, strong and wise. They view all other races and lifeforms with a curiosity that is unmatched, sort of like a great mind looking down on children. Diona are very old with a reproductive cycle that essentially could make them immortal. One individual bipedal ‘bush’ is made up of multiple nymphs with a broad intelligence and inherent capacity to learn. As more and more nymphs join together to make an even bigger structure the capacity to learn does diminish, however the power of the mind and knowledge it can hold skyrockets as seen in the theoretical singularity, where a clump of nymphs have made a structure so big, it would rival a planet in size. This super-structure could be the most intelligent being in the universe with unknown potential.

Diona unlike humans do not need food to survive, only energy in whatever form it may take with the most common being photonic and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. Some Diona have also been known to harness plain old electricity much to the concern of Skrell scientists. Diona are a lot slower paced than humans, in both reactions and actions: It will take them a lot longer to respond but this certainly does not mean they are less intelligent. With this their movement speed in gravity is the slowest of all races in the game however they make up for this by being very tough and immune to pressure and temperature.

A multitude of things; they are so separated from humans, it makes it tricky to explain all of them. They are definitely more curious than a majority of humans, and their natural curiosity drives them. Powered by a photographic memory, and a will of iron, they are a formidable force both politically and physically. They are different biologically, and I think that they follow a vastly different philosophy than humans as well, considering their makeup of smaller organisms. And, as a final note, their culture is intensely interesting- I love the whole person-to-person society which they have. Maybe I'm just rambling, but I love every part of this race.

Do you still believe a few sentences is enough to sum up the differences between the species?

Youbar, you give me a boner in my heart.

BUT YES hello hello. Youbar basically highlighted everything I found wrong with your application, and I have nothing to add.

You know the drill, by now. Get reviews from players on the server once per round, fix up your application a little, yadda yadda. I'll be back Wednesday to pass judgement.

WELL it's a tiny bit past wednesday isn't it.

So yes, time to pass judgement. I'll be straight up with you - I have a very very very very very bad feeling about this. But I can't pin it down, so I'm going to say it's some shape or form of personal bias.

Plus since I'm already holding ALL dionaea on a two-strike standard, as I hope you know, I can't really tighten down on you.

So I'm going to be approving this application, sorry for the delays. Watch yourself out there, and rustle softly.
