ClearThoughts
BYOND Key: ClearThoughts Character Names: Inaaya Vihaan, James Beckett, Heidi McCullen, Meinhof Species you are applying to play: Skrell (Skrellbutts <3) What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Light blue Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yeppers, cover to cover. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I've always been intrigued by Skrell. The calmer, more intelligent races have always piqued my interest. I love them because they offer a different mindset for roleplaying. Playing a calmer race indicates a level of restraint within the player behind the character. Certain options are cut off in dialogue because of this, but it makes the roleplay more interesting. Skrell themselves are.. . Well they're odd to me. I have always had a heart-on for Unathi because I enjoy reptiles (I own snoots and bearded dagrons IRL) , but Skrell must be one of the very few amphibian races I've encountered.. Ever, really. It's slightly hard to call to mind anything that resembles a Skrell besides frogmen or the TMNT. So I guess that's why I'm most interested in the Skrell above the other races available on Aurora or other SS13 HRP servers. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Humans are VERY diverse. I mean, behind the screen, WE'RE human. We know our culture, we know our emotions. To set aside our emotions and try to set in a mindset of something completely biologically different from ourselves or another human is an endeavour in itself. Something that I've pondered and meditated over time and time again to try and achieve even a simple understanding of the basal instincts of another race for even remedial use in a science fiction roleplay (Non-SS13). What makes Skrell different than humans is a little more complicated than saying "they have a wider range of emotions", and in that quote I'd like to reference the Elcor from Mass Effect. They have quite a range of emotions, but to most humans who smile and frown and laugh and cry, Skrell seem bland. On the opposite end, Humans to Skrell seem a little primitive. A different plane of social and technological evolution. If it were not simply the Skrell having been 'elevated' longer in the technological era, it would be a long staggering psychological effect on their biology as a species from the Glorsh incident. Having been oppressed for so long, followed by the mental scarring of the genophage must have a solemnity to it in their minds. Character Name: Marabelle Quirona'Yarus Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Birthed upon Jargon IV, the city of Gli'morr, Marabelle Quirona as she was at the time was welcomed into a family of medicinal practices, specifically a geneticist male parent and a surgeon female parent. (Insert parental unit conehead joke here.) Being surrounded by the practices and research of biological workings throughout her adolescence led her to choose, not surprisingly, a medical field of specialization. Particularly that of surgery. A something-odd 10 or so years of medical school, followed by pure-Skrellian hospital work upon Jargon IV gave her a solid basis for medical sciences and the ability to expand her knowledge outward from there. She could never really shake the desire to be involved with other races, and as such looked to the stars for her future, as many Skrell had done before her. Heading straight into an internship, she received a sponsorship at NT to work alongside the medical department. Her internship, or should I say four internships, lasted a total of four years, two years "on the table" working with a few different surgeons, and two years serving with a Paramedic to understand how each species deals with shock and surgery, the ins and outs of what chemicals to give and how much of them is needed for a situation. NT was very plain on where she went, where she stayed, living in Skrell-accomodated corporate housing while she worked, and eventually signing a contract for medical work aboard the NSS Exodus as a surgeon, eagerly warbling her way each day to work. Of course, nothing was as she seemed. Her coworkers were. . Different. Of course she'd met a few of each race, Unathi being the most rare of social encounters for her, and her perceptions of each race slowly changed. Humans were anything ranging from near-psychotic to overly gleeful in the face of disaster. Tajarans could be both reckless and solemn almost simultaneously, and Unathi were beginning to look more primeval with each security officer she met. Their precognitions of gender-specific roles sometime gnawed at her psyche, and as such she cloistered herself within Medical, making rare social advances by venturing to the bar in an attempt to socialize, have a cup of tea and then swiftly return to the safety of her sterile white halls of the medical division, under the calm supervision of the Chief Medical Officer at the time. With each day a challenge, Marabelle continues her work in hopes that things will one day feel normal. Until then, each meeting with a Skrellian coworker will only be a blessing to her mood as she adjusts to the vastly differentiating cultures of the four races. What do you like about this character? I'm really psyched up for the ability to play someone. . Well, sort of shy or antisocial. Sure, it may seem easy as a human with their typical gestures and emotions, but to play someone or something that relies on the subtleties of noises to describe emotion is very difficult as compared to expressing it quite verbally or actively as a human by shouting or laughing loudly. To play a Skrell is, well, a challenge. A challenge that I very much look forward to. Thus far I've either had a boisterous engineer (Inaaya) or a disgruntled security veteran (James), each of which actively and profusely displays their emotions through their actions and the variability of their restraint. All in all, Humans are just more. . Lax in terms of the amount of give you have to roleplay with. They definitely have a lot longer social leash than Skrell. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd like to say that I was once a 9/10. Everything I took seriously. For some time I took a break from heavy roleplay and resided in a light-medium community. It was lot's of fun, the mix of action and talking-in-character, but I always had this desire for heavy roleplay. Something that only Aurora and a former community Hypatia seemed to sate. At the beginnings of my SS13 career, Aurora was my mainstay until Hypatia existed, and for the time I spent there, Aurora was a different flavor that I didn't care for. I enjoyed the extended rounds, but as the extended grew sour with me, my roleplay began to fall off. Now back with Aurora, I find myself desiring the intricacies again of social and professional interactions. So, for the time being, I'm rating myself 7.5/10 until I can fully adjust to the mix of action and roleplay. Notes: You guys wanna see some skrellbutts? MyBadMan
Good RP and is up to snuff in my opinion! They frequently RPs things out in a very convincing and genuine way. Good time playing with them over in medical. I believe they would make a fine Skrell. +1 Link to comment
Guest Marlon Phoenix
Hello! Sorry for the long delay. First off, you linked to a furry porn site in your application. That is a major social faux pas. Never do that again. For the application itself, I want to ask a few questions about your character; Did she choose the career she did because of her parent's influence, or was it a passion to help people? Or??? How has her relationship with the xeno races changed how she views herself and the skrell species in general? Is she genuinely anxious around them? Why? What is her relationship with the spiritual side of the Skrell species? Is she into the whole astrology thing? Skrell generally take great importance in finding their place in the grand scheme of things - how does she view the universe and her relationship with it? Link to comment
ClearThoughts
Did she choose the career she did because of her parent's influence, or was it a passion to help people? Or??? Neato, you have questions. She chose her career in the medical division because of her influences in her adolescent stage of life. Her driving passion for work is that her curiousity spans the intermingling of societies between the four races onboard the station and how they each react to situations. Frankly, if she wasn't so interested in biology and anatomy she'd be a psychiatrist. How has her relationship with the xeno races changed how she views herself and the skrell species in general? Is she genuinely anxious around them? Why? So far? I'm actually intending on writing her from the point on of "She is now employed at NT aboard the NSS Exodus" and writing it from there. Frankly? She'll . .Probably be overwhelmed and confined to medical, dealing with patients from case to case. However, anxiety will be a major factor in how she interacts with other people. It will not quite be frantic, however she may be at a loss for words with how brash Humans can be to one another, or how much Unathi can sneer. What is her relationship with the spiritual side of the Skrell species? Is she into the whole astrology thing? Skrell generally take great importance in finding their place in the grand scheme of things - how does she view the universe and her relationship with it? Astrology, and by that I assume you mean the mainstream "religion" of Qeblak, to which I reply she would in fact be a follower of. Weishii? Not so much, but a big quirk about her is that she'd prefer not to have an android take over the functions of her job, attempting to keep the reliance on a cyborg, android, or robot to a minimum wherever possible in her jobspace. As for "Guided by the stars", I don't think Marabelle would be into horoscopes. However, she would be in tune with the emotions of other people and dictate her living trends off of that. With an increase of depression in those around her, she too would be affected and thusly put down a little bit about her life. I'm really trying to put forward an empathetic, quiet character with a definitive kindness in her warbling heart. On a side note, and related to question 3 about Astrology, if I were to play a science Skrellian, I'm fairly sure I'd make them attuned to Weishii and hold short celebrations for each breakthrough in research they achieve. I think it'd be kind of funny. Please, feel free to ask any more questions. I'd be happy to answer them. Thank you! Link to comment
