Coalfiredbanana
BYOND key: CoalFiredBanana Character names: Kaden Fleming How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Recently about 2 weeks, over a year ago I played for months if I recall correctly. When I came back to SS13 I just replayed my last game and fell back into Aurora and felt like I was coming home. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I play exclusively as an Engineer and I find I am running into situations where I am the only Engineer aboard and lack the access and decision making authority I need to work effectively. This can cause problems for the crew as a whole. One issue I've come across is having to rely on borgs to eject the engine core if there is a runaway supermatter. Another example of an issue I've found is that of effecting repairs to the station without the RCD and Blueprints becoming a time consuming affair and can affect the game for everyone, especialy when I am alone. Why did you come to Aurora?: I love the roleplay, SS13 without RP is a free for all and not enjoyable. I honestly don't see why people play on non RO servers Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: I have indeed. You can review my character's educational and work history to see that Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is really just seeing the world through the eyes of your character and interacting with people doing the same. It means a group of people assuming defined roles with objectives, working towards a common goal. It is this aspect which has kept me coming back to Aurora. Roleplay means knowing who you are playing, their knowledge and capabilities. Being aware of what your character would and wouldn't do in differing situations. For example I play as an Engineer, I might go after blobs with an emitter but you'll never see me picking up a gun and chasing down a traitor. (In a recent game I tried to rescue another engineer who was under attack with my welding torch, I died. Which is a realistic outcome for an engine jockey trying to be a hero.) If everyone ingame is a super brave, spec ops trained badass it gets boring very quickly. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: OOC: To give direction and advice to players who ask for it, for example pointing newer players to the wiki or other resources where they can learn ingame mechanics. Ingame: Much more involved, you become the head of your department and a ranking officer onboard the station. It is the responsibility of the Heads to keep their departments together and the station as a whole as far away from collapse as possible. I have noticed that many players come to Aurora for the RP but when in game seem to want to do their own thing, there are obviously certain tasks that are more enjoyable but to use Engineering as an example. Not everyone can set up the engine. Someone has to set up the Solars. The Heads are responsible for making sure that neccesary tasks are done so that everyone on server can have a good time. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: As I mentioned above, the OOC responsibility of a Whitelisted player, specifically a Head of Staff is to be a guide for players who seek it. In particular those who are perhaps less aware of ingame mechanics and lore. In addition, we need to create a welcoming space for people who would like to play here. If we get a reputation for being hostile we will lose our player base and that means no more Aurora. Related to this I think is the fact that a whitelisted player becomes much more part of the story of the game than the regular player and their actions can have a huge impact on the round. I think this is important OOC because we need to remember that our actions affect the game and enjoyment of everyone else. How will I uphold them? I enjoy being helpful and I feel that is what matters. I want people to have a good time and if I can assist in that regard then you bet I'll do so. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Kaden Fleming Character age: 48 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Kaden Fleming was born in Scottsdan, Biesel to Selleck (A robotocist) and Mary (A military pilot) Fleming. From a young age Kaden was interested in how the world worked, he found a particular passion in the interactions between gasses. He attended school in his hometown of Scottsdan and had a happy upbringing, alas his Mother died in a training incident when he was a teenager. This event left Kaden with no small ammount of animosity towards Combat Arms officers. His interest in physics led to Kaden going straight from school to the University of Ceres where he completed a Higher Diploma in Atmospheric Engineering before joining NT as Junior Atmospheric Technician aboard NSS Redemption. While aboard the Redemption Kaden learned and grew until he was promoted to full Atm. Technician and assigned to the Drone Carrier NMV Icarus. Life on a Security Service ship suited him and the smaller quarters saw Kaden working closely with his counterparts in the Engineering Dept.. This sparked a broader interest in engineering and Kaden went back to the Uni of Ceres on NT's dime where he completed the credits required for a Bsc in Engineering afterwhich he was assigned to the Engine Room aboard the Response Cruiser NMV Glynneath and later, after completing his Msc to the Escort Cruiser NMV Gloria Verdantes. While working aboard fleet ships Kaden completed his Doctorate, shortly thereafter he was assigned to his current duty station aboard the Phoron Research and Mining Station NSS Aurora where he hopes to be considered for the position of Chief Engineer. What do you like about this character?: Engineer Fleming is a dedicated man, inteligent and dedicated to his job. Newer engineers will always find sage advice and a kind word if they seek it, provided they listen and try not to screw up too much. Kaden has to sometimes remind himself that he was a young engineer too, however he is not a bad man and views his colleagues as the family he never had. Kaden has often been praised by his superiors for working tirelessly to keep the station running smoothly, his greatest happiness is an engine control room after everything has been set up properly and the alarm monitor is empty. What do you dislike about this character?: Kaden has been known to drink a bit much, perhaps because people insist on interfering with his coolant ratios and grid setup. He can also be short tempered when non engineering staff make unrealistic demands of him and his kind. A minor aspect of Fleming's personality is his lack of knowledge regarding alien species, there were not many Vaurcas onboard his old duty stations. Hopefully a station like the Aurora will broaden his horizons. Mr Fleming is also completely uninterested in anything that happens outside the doors of the Engineering Department and sees anything without a yellow stripe on it as a waste of resources, an attitude which will hopefully change with exposure to the upper workings of a research station. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Engineer Fleming believes in leadership for the sake of results. He does not want to be CE because he wants to be in charge, rather he feels that he is well suited to keeping the lights on and the air flowing. A CE should also be willing to teach and Engineer Fleming firmly believes that the greatest disservice to newer members is to deny them mentorship, as such if he was promoted to CE he would dedicate his time to teaching his crew everything he knows. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: Pretty good I think, although taking the time to sit and write out this application has highlighted some aspects of my RP that I can work on. I try to take note of what a man who had spent his entire adult life in the engine rooms of starships would know and feel. This tend to make me quite grumpy and short tempered. I think my dialogue is one area I need to focus on and lately I have been making an effort to be consistant with my speech and have enjoyed it much more. Inter-crew relations are something I take note of and I must say there really is something great about holding a round long grudge against someone for interfering with your SMES values before retiring to the bar to drink whiskey. Extra notes: I really would love to be given the chance to be CE. I feel amazing when I can hold the station together for everyone, atleast until the evitable hell breaks lose. I feel like being allowed to play as CE will improve both my enjoyment of the game as well as make it easier to serve the rest of the people in game. I must be honest that I have no interest in playing other departments, I love playing engineering and my bio is based on the truth. I started playing atmos before getting roped into engine setups. Only as an Engi can you directly change the physical layout of the station and I love that. Something as small as writing down which wires to what in an airlock makes me giddy with happiness, which is rather weird I suppose. Anyway, I love this server and I really appreciate the effort you guys put in to keeping things as great as they are and I hope I can help with that. I've been up far longer than I planned writing this and I need to go to bed because I have work in 6 hours. Thank you for reading my ramblings and I hope you decide I'm worthy! Link to comment
