  1. You are making the presumption that good officers will not want to file out a rather simple application so they can play a role, on the basis that there are more hoops to jump through. As if these supposed 'good officers' will be put off by a server that has applications for certain roles. Isn't this sort of how it works? You can't just expect authority to be given to you just because. You have to make an effort in order to show that you want the role you have in your sights, and then do enough good to say to these people, 'Hey! I deserve this, because I've been good.' Would any of you have it any other way? The main issue I have with this is that this is in fact a thing. Are people who are good roleplayers put off by places that have their applications whitelisted? Absolutely. Nobody wants to write an essay on why it is they'd like to play a video game that they enjoy, and whitelist only serve to restrict that immediate role freedom to fit into the shoes of their characters. Even with that aside, a major issue along with it is just the premise of it. There's already a week restriction for newer players to integrate a bit more into the server before moving onto a more important role. Is there a need to make it more restricted? It's simple paperwork, but it's simple paperwork that some people might not even want to do. Looking back even further on some of the points made by others on the fact that this server has antagonist, there is also a need for swaths of security lest the department become underpopulated as a result. My point (Holy god, that's a lot of points. Don't write in the early hours, kids. ) is that it's ultimately a bad call. You're restricting something that really doesn't need to be restricted. It's a preventative measure that weeds out those that might be harmful, but ultimately would harm the department and all other players as well. To be perfectly honest, when I first started into SS13 HRP, this was an essential part of my search criteria. If a place had a role that I really wanted to do whitelisted, I ended up going to another server. It's something that drives people away. And...Good god, can I extend this any longer? Wrap it up Nogo. A white-list is a wall. You're putting up a wall for people to climb over. No matter how simple it is, there will always be 'good' people who don't see it worth it to climb your wall. Like was quoted by the great Oscar Wilde, "Walls keep people out." and "Why am I here again?" So yeah. Blah, blah, blah. Why do we need more paperwork, blah blah blah, enough as is, blah blah blah, this is a 2D space man game. I'd have it plenty of other ways. I just don't like this way, because the precedent is just so alien. Presuming. It sounds like you're presuming that shitcurity will get their whitelist anyway just on commitment alone. You are vastly overestimating their will. EDIT: In retrospect, I should try to figure out what the hell it is I'm trying to say. Me and words are not inclined to agree, and it makes the whole thing look a bit loony. I'm sure I'd find the right words to say if I were actually speaking but-...Well, might as well leave this like it is. Have fun rifling through this chaotic post, you guys. It feels impossible to get the point I'm trying to reach into the right words.
  2. You kids know what's up. If my character is bad and I should feel bad, drop a heads up and I'll look into working on it. These things are work in progress after all. I do like making them as high a quality as I can.
  3. ---------------------- ---------------------- Name: Jordan Hawkins Bell Sex: Male Date of Birth: 3/15/2415 Blood Type: A- Eye Color: Blue Hair Color: Gray Height: 6'2" Weight: 210 lbs Alias: "Hawke" Religion: Agnostic Home System: Sol Citizenship: Mars/Joint History Jordan was born March 13th, 2415 and was raised by a single mother in the city-state of "Shì chǐlún" of Mars. He grew up to a low-income lifestyle, in one of the lower areas of his Arcology. He had no known family besides that of his mother. Growing up in Shì chǐlún, he was the ethnic minority as being of European decent, and had trouble integrating for a long time and faced a great deal of discrimination. As a young adult he'd grown to know the police of his nearby area very well, as he had stayed overnight in jail enough times that he called it his "Weekly Appointment". He was violent, belligerent, and an overall detriment during his youth. He did not participate in major crime, but he was enough of a troublemaker to trouble police regularly. His mother, who worked to provide her family as a clerk at a nearby business, would come to fall very ill on account of overworking herself. Responsibility shifted, and Jordan quickly found himself needing to find legitimate work so that he could provide for his mother. Observing the hard time police had in the area dealing with crime, what it is they had to go through, and at the suggestion of a friend within the force, Jordan signed up as a Police Cadet with his local station and begun his training to become a Police Officer. It was around this point that Jordan's attitude and demeanor would slowly begin to transform into a much more productive member of society. The balance of having responsibility and a mutual understanding with those that he had to arrest made him much more considerate and thoughtful about what he said and did. Having never been academically inclined, Jordan narrowly passed the Academy Exams and excelled in the physical portion, becoming an officer in the year of being a cadet. He'd work several years with the local force. He was heavily noted within the force as being the "People Cop" or generally the most cooperative officer in his precinct. He was also cited as having a distaste for the standard gear issued to him and used it sparingly, preferring to use his words to settled disputes and calm others down. He was capable, though, of bringing down any suspect and maintained a strict athletic regiment and diet to which he still does. During his time with the police, he self enrolled himself through college and got an associates degree in communication. Rising very slowly in the ranks, he eventually found himself in the rank of Sergeant for several years, in charge of supervision and guidance of the patrol officers in his precinct and relaying orders down the chain. He was also responsible for the introductory training for cadets fresh out of school and getting them used to the work. Thinking if he had remained in this place where he was the minority and was separated from his peers, he would come to leave Mars.. When his mother passed away five years after joining the precinct, having fallen victim to heart disease, he would resign his position and seek out work outside of Mars. He would be employed with Nanotrasen since the age of 36, working entirely in the security force for the next six years of his life. During his Nanotrasen Security Cadet training and throughout his career, he'd use his savings to enroll into university and (With much effort) obtain a Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement. Later on, during his years as an official member of the private security force and with experience he learned on-hand in his time with the Martian police force, he'd pursue specialization in criminal negotiation and would participate in crisis training regularly. He had helped the manage the squad under him and keep them properly in line for almost eight years. Bell --- Mother ---[DECEASED] Known Online Accounts/Identities: Physical Appearance Medical History: Three major inhibiting wounds have been recorded for Jordan Bell: The first of which is the loss of his right eye during his time as a police officer. In dealing with a dispute in a bar, a glass bottle was smashed to the right side of his head. The bottle shattered, so while the blunt force smashed through the socket of his eye, it was also lacerated by glass shards which also pierced through the skin in other nearby areas. While the scars on his skin healed cleanly, his eye could not be salvaged. When asked if he would opt for a bionic replacement, he denied. His entire left arm has been amputated and replaced with a mechanical prosthesis. This incident was caused by an accident in which he fell from one of the higher ledges of his arcology. The end result was landing on some jagged metal that severed his arm cleanly. Emergency personnel were not able to re-attach the arm in time. His right arm is replaced as well, being the most recent of his injuries. In this very same year, he was called out to an issue outside of station and suited up for EVA. Upon leaving the station, he was attacked by a swarm of carp that resulted in the loss of his right arm. Due to malfunctions with medical equipment, it could also not be re-attached in time. Side Notes: Fluent in Sol Common, Common, Gutter, and Chinese Mandarin.
  4. Immediately lament all of those limbs and organs that just got replaced.
  5. Because if you'd use your common sense for a minute, whitelisting security would help A LOT when dealing with rule breaking officers. I wouldn't bother making reports about shitton of bad security players whom' probably already left Aurora after a bad round. Neither will they bother filling for the whitelist. But an issue with that is all the red tape that is set up for those who genuinely look to play some of these roles and may actually be good security players. It's not only a restriction on keeping out people who are poor officers, but also those that aren't. Gives more hurdles to jump over for your casual player who might be looking to just play a server for a bit. For the newer players to the server, the week restriction does a pretty good job of keeping people out of security who are just looking for trouble, but I feel like pushing even more restrictions would just be a detriment. EDIT: Blah blah blah, additions and such. So, sure, while you gain something in not having to deal with such players as often and cut some reports out of the deal you'll also have to deal with people losing an interest in that of security. Where some work is cut out for one person, it's just added onto another person. EDIT 2: Never underestimate the commitment of some people to be shitcurity.
  6. This made me laugh harder than it probably should have.
  7. Well the first thing I'm noticing here is the implication that you'd meta-grudge for actions that could be complete in-character, given that people who go against the guidelines set and generally disapprove of such things 'do' exist. Whipping out the meta-grudge on something like that is just not cool, no matter how angry it gets you. That all aside, I'm not saying that you shouldn't have guidelines set in place at all or that people who're being terri-bad shouldn't be demoted. But I do think that Head's (Or players for that matter) expectations out of their departments can be a bit exaggerated at times and end up either hindering the department by doing "So-and-so" or just sowing discontent against that head within the department. It's not bad to have some expectations, but it does create an issue when the expectation is... Clashes of Role play, issues with people not doing what you ask, and challenges are a big thing with what HRP is made up of, and it should be expected. As far as "NT likes me goes"... That'd be a first for me to hear, and that's hilarious. But I understand the trivialization of some demotions especially in circumstances of stepping down from something or an overly harsh punishment. There are something that can be said here and there that make the scars not so permanent. But if it's so bad that they do horrible things time and time again and keep coming back on as this role, then it doesn't sound like a bad idea to make a Character Complaint or something instead. Gets more things done, and there's less grudge involved that everyone agrees is garbage and makes everyone have bad times. EDIT: Oh! Forgot to add. The expectation isn't just exclusive to the character. Player expectations for other people's role play can get bad. Sometimes people just ignore people who aren't as 'good' at role playing, and that just makes people feel bad too. The more you know~!
  8. 1. Char ain't even catholic. 2. Pretty outlandish to have in that kinda stuff in an employee record and 3. What award exactly? One that you made up just for this occasion? The many edits I make, I always end up looking over dis stuff. Blegh. I was struggling to remember which religion it was and ended up picking one. As for the awards, I purposely made it a bit vague. As for studies I did as to what you can honorarily be made by that of a pope they were all a bit-...Off, and it seemed difficult to put an express title granted. The implied thing isn't that an award itself wasn't given out, just a...y'know...Good word. It is pretty outlandish, yeah. Just thought having those little details would be fun, especially when trying to establish a known man of the cloth. Apologies for a lot of the stuff that's been done today personally, I'm sick and on all sorts of meds, so trying to fight some things through the daze to put down some facts. Some of this stuff is due for change like the religion and other things that I can work out the time to research a bit better than a few minutes. EDIT: I knew it. Looked back at my sources for the character and messed up my Catholics. Let's just change that thar... EDIT 2: The thing with the honorary title still wasn't intended to be made up, but the major conflict I was having was with the Monsignor stuff and how it'd play with a mostly independent priest and still trying to keep everything flowing. For sake of simplicity, I'll just remove it in place of his actual works. Forget it all. Just decided to redo the whole thing on new information. I think it looks better!
  9. Chaplains, E'rebody. Let's all strap onto the Christ Rocket. Yeeeeehawww~!
  10. WARNING! Prepare thineself for sprawling walls of text ---------------------- ---------------------- Name: Dr. Seamus Victoria Flanigan III Sex: Male Date of Birth: 4/5/2377 Blood Type: O+ Eye Color: Blue Hair Color: Gray Height: 5'8" Weight: 168 lbs Alias: N/A Religion: Eastern Catholic Home System: Sol Citizenship: Earth/Joint Faction: Nanotrasen History Born to a wealthy family in the European Union, Seamus came into the world of a long line of medical professionals. His father before him was a well reputed doctor who had earned his fortune in the management of several hospitals and healthcare services. He was in line to succeed his father from a very young age and was given educated among the most elite. He would be given courses by professionals who worked under his father, advances his own studies into the field of medical care. It was during one of his father's business trips, many of which he accompanied him on, that he would be led to Rome. His father did not pay much attention to him and kept mostly to his own work, so he found himself wandering the mega cities and exploring. It was here that he would come to know greatly about the history of religion and would stick to it almost immediately. His family was atheist and shunned these sorts of things so when he brought back his experiences with him and tried to pursue greater learning in the subject he was turned into something of the family's 'Black Sheep', in which he immediately fell out of favor with his father. He would eventually run away from home at the age of sixteen, shortly after graduation from secondary school. As a run-away, he rarely stayed in one place for long. He would keep a journal of his two years of travel that would be published in 2355. While the two years were extremely rough on him he would be able to creatively express himself. It was during this time that he would meet his Wife-to-Be Caroline Thresher, marrying her at the age of eighteen and settling down for a more stable life. Working as a clerk in a hospital he would focus on his family and his education, continuing to pursue his M.D. to apply his better known skills. He also served as a volunteer at the local Catholic Parish for many years, his interest in religion having not waned at all. At the age of 20, Caroline would bear him one son named Eugene. At 21 they would have a daughter, but due to complications at child birth both the child and Caroline would tragically lose their lives. Post-death he would name her "Alice". This drastically effected Seamus in a number of ways, most notably beginning his start in literature and he would come to cling more to religion. Once he converted officially to Catholicism, He would start with writing morbid and dark apostrophes and would publish one novel with highly religious roots and running themes of tragedy simply titled "Grim". He raised his son alone, affording a much better life once he had earned his MD and continued from residency into a surgeon at the hospital he had worked at. The hours were long and tireless, and what time was not spent working was spent at the local church. His son would rarely get the time of day like his father before him and would come to resent him. As the many years calmed Seamus and he fell out of his depression into acceptance he would spend much of his time studying both medicine and theology, establishing theories and opinions that he shared with both communities. These, however, were mildly unpopular. A local priest would recommend that Seamus join the cloth once his son came of age, and this would influence his decision to acquire a bachelors in religious studies. All the while he continued to branch into more and more specialization as a medical doctor. When his son had turned eighteen and moved out (Who would go on to pursue a career in science and become atheist) and he had earned enough of a tidy sum to live well he would submit his application to a seminary and fully dedicate himself to Religious study. He was officiated as an Eastern Catholic priest at the age of 40, among a group of Roman Catholics. He would lead a few events now and again and was active in the church, but he was most well known for his seclusion and heavy studying. The years would pass calmly, his son and himself having fallen out of contact with each other, as Seamus would goes through text upon text of Christian documents. It was around the age of 48 though that interest was drawn upon Seamus. On one particular day in the church Seamus had arrived with stacks upon stacks of book which in and of itself isn't unusual, however they seemed to be based on other branches of Christianity that were not recognized. The day after, books on a number of different religions followed by humanity. The day after that, religions practiced around the world. Controversy arose when he would began to make studies and observations of other religions from a Catholic viewpoint and showed opinions vastly different from that of the church at the time. When they were published they were immediately taken to by the religious community in a storm. For every rabid fan there was an equally as rabid critic who declared heresy on him, with non-reaction on Seamus' part. This was just the start however. As years passed and more and more controversy arose in Seamus' publishing, there was a clear division in the small church that he lived and prosecution and aggression between members would boil. Having no want to bring people apart, Seamus saw the best option to leave the small church entirely. That is not to say issues had not arisen before, being an Eastern Catholic among Roman Catholics had the tendency to make people outraged in and of itself. With disposable income, much time, and passion, Seamus would at the age of 52 begin to use his resources to see first-hand the many things he had read about in the Theological world. He would pack lightly and travel around the galaxy to the biggest of cities and the smallest of villages in attempts to learn more about the way of life there and the belief that they held. Having to be mostly self-sufficient, his skills as a medical doctor would come to pay off in the more impoverished areas of the world and he would stay months at a time in villages who were in times of crisis and helped them best he could. The majority of his literary works would come from this nearly two decades long time of travel. He would settle back down again at the age of 73, resigning from his travels (as he attributes to his old age). Somewhere along the way he would be influenced to start his career with Nanotrasen. He's been under their employment for nearly seven years now.
