Zer0Winds Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 (edited) Not sure if this is a good idea honestly, so here I subject my idea to the community, and allow them to judge me. So... I don't really see why Tech Support is in the Library. I have some problems with it, but this is primarily a flavor change. I saw someone mention this, and I want to see it. Make Tech Support it's own thing, and give them an office. Maybe the Vacant Office, on the surface, I've never seen it used. Give them some extra tools, and let them run free, fixing tech issues. Or sit in their office all day, I don't know. One issue with having Tech Support in the Library, is that if you want to play it like one, you're not going to be running the library, and the Librarian players are now out of luck. All two of them. The other, is people do not... trust Tech Support? I mean it like this, with an example; I have a Tech Support I play, and I usually just do the minor stuff that Engineers tend to sometimes ignore, like fixing vending machines, because let's face it, those are more common than computers not working. However, since they do not start with anything to do that, I usually have to ask Engineers for it, which they would usually as long as I promise not to use them illegally. Sometimes however, I get rejected, not because of jobs, but because I work in the library so I'm obviously not trained to fix those. Records be damned. I have one other suggestion for Tech Support but that's... not quite possible, from my understanding, for game reasons. I'll still put it here. Allow them to access the PDA server. I never see captains do anything about Spam, and it gets annoying. I have an IC reason for why I don't handle it, but people still message my TS, asking him to fix spam, and I agree with them when they say it doesn't quite make sense. Telecommunications falls under Information Technology, which means it's literally part of the things a Tech Support would fix. It would allow a Tech Support to have more to do, without just making them work the library as mister/miss fancy librarian with a better degree. The second suggestion can actually help with the first one. If you put TS into Engineering Department, make them their own entity or something, separate from both Engineers and Atmospherics, and make it it's own, with their own office somewhere, they can probably have more reason to access things like Telecommunications, and handle some stuff Engineers might not care or be bothered to deal with, and they are separate from Engineers to make it so they still can do what I said above, but not have to worry about things like Breaches or some major engineering issues. I imagine the relationship to be like the Forensic Technician in Security. They are their own thing, do their thing, and are not expected to do what the rest of Security does. In this case, Tech Support does it's own thing, as their own thing, and are not expected to do everything that Engineers do. Edited March 8, 2020 by Zer0Winds
Xelnagahunter Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 While I understand wanting to do more, I'm one of the CEs that will tell you "no" about getting gloves or other tools to perform repairs. So far the only information we have regarding the alt-title role is that it's used for IT purposes. This makes perfect sense as tech support and service technicians are a very different field. I don't ask Geek Squad to fix my appliances, I get a service technician that is trained to work with mechanical hardware. In an IT position, you might replace PC parts, that is the most hardware interaction you get considering 99% of those are pre-constructed and usually just plug and play with a potential screw to hold it in place. Otherwise you deal with software and networking issues. Attached is the only information we have to go off of.
