Herpetophilia2 Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 (edited) BYOND Key: Herpetophilia Character Names: Ian Peters Elijah Brooks Suul Akhandi Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character: A soft, pale blue Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Of course. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: After taking a small break from SpaceStation13, I've decided to come back and just try something new. I remember reading the Skrell lore about 2-3 months ago, finding it kinda dull. However, after I've given in a new, thorough read this week, it caught me as interesting and unique. I like the concept of telepathy as communication and a tool, and the entire theme of Skrell being an advanced race who have created an almost Utopian government stands out to me. I also feel like getting a new whitelist and experimenting with new characters may help me become a tad better at roleplaying, as I get to act in a different way and utilize new ideas and mechanics. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Aside from obviously being amphibian, and having all the minuses and pluses that come with that (underwater breathing, skin mucus, etc.), what makes Skrell special is their emotions and how they convey them. Skrell are a telepathic species, capable of speaking and conveying their emotions to others using nothing but their brain. Unable to use their faces to show emotion, they are normally ignored or distanced away from as others think of them as emotionless or cold. In reality, Skrell simply cannot project their emotions to other species as they would to their own kind. Skrell in large groups produce a field of thought and emotion known as the Nlom, where each Skrell is able to feel to some extent the thoughts and emotions of other Skrell. Different Skrell are split into two categories based on how they use or interpret the field - Receivers, and Listeners. Receivers take in the emotions from the Nlom automatically to some extent, which means a Receiver in a group of scared Skrell will be bombarded with emotions of fear that they cannot suppress, and will likely become afraid themselves. Listeners, on the other hand, can "listen" to the Nlom, but are not directly or immediately affected by it, so a Listener in the same situation will adknowledge that the Skrell around them are scared, but will not immediately become scared themselves unless being directly triggered to. Additionally, when Skrell sleep, they will enter a telepathic dream with other Skrell around them, which basically functions like a lucid dream for everyone involved, where ideas and thoughts can be shared much more openly and easier. I know the explanation is a bit vague, but it's the best I can do without making things confusing. Maybe ask me questions to clarify? Character Name: Qilag Giiqui Please provide a short backstory for this character: Born in Kal'lo, 2417 into a Qeblak Quya consisting of a historian, a teacher and an archaeologist, Qilag was always encouraged to explore and find new things as a child. As he went through Skrell Kindergarden, he found fascination in digging up old toys and items in the playgrounds and examining them, trying to think of a story and attach it to them. This behavior was shunned by his own young peers, however he found reassurance in his parents and teachers as they encouraged him that an inquisitive, creative mind is a good mind. When at home, he would favor the company and teachings of the archaeologist in his Quya, Glii Iquio. When both had free time, they would explore parks in search of lost toys and items, or as Glii called them, "forgotten treasures." After returning home in the afternoon, hands and footwear covered in dirt, they would lay their findings on a table and clean them. This was Qilag's favorite pasttime, which he favored above other things that children of his age did, such as holo-games and books. By the end of Kindergarden, he knew that his dream career was archaeology and anything related to it. At age 20, after graduating from Kindergarden, Qilag thought of how he would go about his life. His Quya has seen his aptitude and interest for finding long-forgotten items and the like, and encouraged him to try and get degrees in ancient Skrell history and archaeology. Glii, however, recommended something else. Stating that the outside galaxy has much more to explore and experience than their own planet, Glii advised Qilag to instead aim for a degrees of and related to Xenoarchaeology. Qilag considered both options, and finally decided that Xenoarchaeology is right for him. He finally started his education at 21, getting a degree in Xenoarchaeology and Handling of Pre-Historic Artifacts at 31, and then getting another degree in Anomalous Materials at 40. Soon after, he was hired by a government committee and was stationed at multiple Skrell research outposts in the Skrell frontier. After working for about 5 years, he heard news of new, exciting artifacts being found around the outskirts of Tau Ceti that may have belonged to a forgotten precursor xeno civilization. He immediately was excited, and spoke to multiple representatives if he can be sent to Tau Ceti for studies. After a month, he was finally given free passage, a work visa, and a contract with a human mega-corporation known as NanoTrasen which permitted research material to be shared with the Jargon Federation. In another month, he was enjoying a middle-class apartment in District 3, and getting ready for his first day aboard the Aurora - the station that he was assigned to. What do you like about this character? The main thing that I like about Qilag is his inquisitiveness and excitement. He always earns for more knowledge, and he will go anywhere to get it. How would you rate your role-playing ability? A 6 or 7 out of ten. I haven't played in a bit, but I'm getting back into the flow. Notes: I'm actually gonna make these a bit lengthy. I wanna start by saying that I know that my third paragraph, the part where he actually ended up in Tau Ceti, is a bit vague and weird. I've had a bit of a tough time thinking of a way that I can implement him going to Tau Ceti, and that was the end result. I know it's not special, and not much, but I hope it is not too bad. Then, there are the questions of Qilag being Listener/Receiver and his view of synthetics, xenos, and the Federation. I also had a bit of a hard time implementing these into the story without them just seeming unrelated to it. To put it short, Qilag is a Listener, however he slightly leans towards the Receiver side of things when pressured enough. He has an extremely neutral position regarding synthetics - not because I'm just too lazy to explain why he is this or that, but because in his line of work and study, synthetics simply weren't a big part. Although he specialized in Archaeology, it wasn't about Skrell or the Glorsh Rebellion, although he learned and studied about the event to some extent. However, he also knows that synthetics and IPCs are somewhat heavily used in Tau Ceti, so he decided to try and remain neutral. He does not overly trust synthetics, but he does not dislike them, either. He is thankful to the Federation for providing the life he leads, and the education he has received in the past. He also is quite fascinated by other species, being a large supporter of improving interspecies relationships and research. In addition, to clarify, Qilag's status of being originally sent to Tau Ceti by the Federation will not give him any special privileges, save for maybe a badge or patch. Finally, big thank you to anyone who reads this and leaves feedback, positive or negative. Edited June 4, 2020 by Herpetophilia2
