Zer0Winds Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 (edited) BYOND Key: Zer0Winds Discord Username: Zer0Winds#0173 Character Name: Qrose Nyala'Toqli-Fet Item Name: Designer Labcoat Item Function(s): It's a reskin of the labcoats available, with features similar to the Hephaestus variant. Item Description: A custom made labcoat, that features some aesthetic design choices, while maintaining its protection against minor chemical spills. It is notably black, and has purple highlights across the shoulder, sleeves, and across the bottom. Why is your character bringing this item to work?: Qrose is a very typical Federation Skrell. They also have a preference for wearing a labcoat, even when not necessarily working in a lab, and rarely takes it off. They're also a strange mix of being reclusive and social. As a recluse, they'd be perfectly content to simply study their artifacts in peace. However, they also have a desire to share their findings. Whether presenting them physically, or doing a slideshow presentation, publishing their findings to the newscaster, and their attempt to write a book about it, some of it requires being seen in public, and Qrose knows that if one is being seen in public, they need to be aesthetically pleasing. How did your character obtain this item?: Qrose had it specially made, not long after actually getting into their field. They had it made specifically to show they have grown past simple mining, working for Qerr'Zolvq. The purple accents help show that they work in a scientific profession. What value does this item have to your character, and what story does it tell?: Qrose had the coat made because they wished to be a little more aesthetically pleasing outside the lab, while maintaining their preference for wearing the labcoat, but most notably, it was made when they stopped working simple "labor" jobs like mining, and moved into Archeology, and later Xenoarcheology, an actual scientific field. They take pride in moving past that, and the coat is prestigious... to pretty much them alone, at least. Sprites: qrose_coat.dmi Additional Comments: So, I've actually been using a custom loadout labcoat for this, but I came up with the idea for this when looking at the normal Scientist coat, and thought the highlights would work well for it. The Hephaestus and Zeng-Hu Coats, similarly I thought had good potential for the coat's design. Part of the design is a patch but I just use the shoulder patch item in-game. Also, thanks jrphoenix, for the sprite. Edited September 25, 2021 by Zer0Winds
jrphoenix303 Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 I like it. It doesn't seem like it'd be too disruptive in-game. I also made it, so I may be biased.
MattAtlas Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 This does seem a little superficial to me. I'm not wholly against this, but the reasoning leaves a lot to be desired, especially for what's essentially a recolored labcoat. The sprite's also very unpleasing to the eye because of how dark the black is -- it should be lighter.
Zer0Winds Posted October 2, 2021 Author Posted October 2, 2021 I mean, fair enough. It really is just a recolored labcoat, honestly, and the reasoning is a lot of words for "just because". Whether or not its too dark, I admit I can't actually tell. I've come to learn that my monitor displays color tones and brightness a bit weirdly, some things seeming brighter or darker than they really are. Looking at it on my other monitor, I can somewhat see how its darker, but, that's whatever. If its too dark, in conjunction with the previous statement, I guess so be it. This isn't the most important to me.
MattAtlas Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 Yeah, this is too superficial for a clothing item. I reccomend adding this as a loadout item instead - or reapplying with more flavour (and a sprite that shows said flavour too, since as it is, it's just a color swap). Denied.
