SilverDeThuggles Posted November 13, 2021 Posted November 13, 2021 BYOND Key: dascorncakes Total Ban Length: Permanent Banning staff member's Key: yonimer Reason of Ban: Responded with racial insults when questioned in PMs on why their AI turned off the holodeck safeties, this is a perma ban, you can make a appeal when this isn't how you respond. Reason for Appeal: I'm not dascorncakes my Ckey is SilverDeThuggles. When I tried to join the server again recently I started getting this message saying I was dascorncakes and that I was banned. This happened shortly after my BYOND had started refusing to connect to any server at all due to an issue with the BYOND pager on my PC. I only started getting this ban message after I had that issue BYOND pager so I'm fairly certain that error somehow made the server mistake me as dascorncakes. Either way I'm not dascorncakes so I'd like to be unbanned.
Arrow768 Posted November 13, 2021 Posted November 13, 2021 Given that this is more a technical question weather you are a ban evader or not, I will take care of this appeal and resolve it hopefully in the next few days. With that said, why have you been using a VPN to connect to the server when we explicitly warn in our rules that something like that can happen when using a VPN?
SilverDeThuggles Posted November 13, 2021 Author Posted November 13, 2021 I realized how little security there was when it came to BYOND servers and IPs. Because of that I generally use a VPN for any and all servers that I play on. It's always the same dedicated IP though that's why I believe that this was a result of a weird BYOND pager error and not a same IP thing.
Arrow768 Posted November 15, 2021 Posted November 15, 2021 The statement about you using the same IP is not true as indicated by the connection data. We explicitly have a warning against using a VPN in our rules as ban-evaders tend to use a VPN connection to try and hide their "correct" IP. The problem there is that people who might not have done anything can get caught in these bans if they happen to be assigned a IP address of a ban evader. (With a VPN connection this is more likely than when using a "normal" residential connection) I would be interested in your security concerns which prompted you to opt for a VPN connection when playing online games.
SilverDeThuggles Posted November 19, 2021 Author Posted November 19, 2021 I do not remember the exact name but from what I remember IPs when connecting to byond servers are basically public for all players to see if you know how to look. Apparently there's some sort of "vault" thing that's lacking when it comes to BYOND and IPs. I do not remember the specifics like I said. I would prefer not to go into detail as to what prompted me to use VPNS. People tend to have malicious intent and they can actually do something with that intent when they have your IP. I also believe those dates are after the point where I started to have the issue with my byond pager. I was messing with my Wifi at the time trying to fix it so it's likely that my VPN auto connected to a non dedicated server. I've been using a VPN with ss13 for awhile now and I've only had this problem happen once before in my two and a half years of playing ss13. And that was before I was aware of the issue and started using a dedicated IP. I'm aware of the risk of using a VPN when connecting to BYOND servers and that it might end up with me getting mistaken for someone else and getting banned but I'm not gonna risk getting doxxed.
Arrow768 Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 Even if I look at previous connections, the IP address is not static/dedicated. I do not believe that this "byond pager issue" you cited in your original message had any influence on your ban status, as the ban was placed because you were using a (VPN) IP address of a banned person. The whole "doxing using a IP" is imho a bit overblown as all decent ISPs have measures in place against that (especially due to the GDPR and similar laws outside of Europe) At this time I do not have sufficient information to be certain about your status as a ban evader. As the ban that had you linked is relatively old I have deactivated the mirror-ban on your account and placed a note to perma-ban you in case you show behavior that is similar to that of dascorncakes. If you connect again with the IP that originally caused the ban, you will be banned again automatically.
Arrow768 Posted November 26, 2021 Posted November 26, 2021 If there is nothing else I’ll move this unban request to the archive within 24h
