La Villa Strangiato
BYOND Key: lavillastrangiato Character Names: Rei Patel, Adelaide Hawk Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character: #1F5F1F Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes! Why do you wish to play this specific race: I like lizard people in fantasy and sci-fi because they look pretty cool and have interesting lore, like Argonians in The Elder Scrolls series. When it comes to Unathi, I like how badass they are with the whole martial culture, and heavy emphasis on HONOUR. I also think that their whole steampunk/post-apoc aesthetic cultivates a lot of great character concepts and ways in which a person from a life of more abundance might clash culturally with an Unathi. I'd like to add a different, alien perspective to what I see as a largely human and Tajaran Horizon, and I'm hoping I can try and branch out with my roleplay when trying to play an alien race. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Unathi, for one, are giant lizard people and are cold-blooded. They tend towards sluggishness to conserve their energy, meaning that one could describe their movements as slower and perhaps more deliberate-seeming than a human's movements would be. As they are very strong, they might consider other species to be weaker or make jokes about how Unathi are simply built different. They would do things like stare at an object of interest, sample the air with their tongue, flick their tail when agitated or curious, or bellow to intimidate. Ethanol-based alcohol is off-limits, but butanol serves the same effect. Also, an Unathi gets no nutrition from plants, only using them as little garnishes. Unathi are quite traditional and conservative in their societies, with their interplanetary government the Izweski Hegemony being a feudal society ruled by a hereditary monarch. Honour is given great emphasis in Sinta culture, with men being expected to be warriors, hunters, and providers. Women, on the other hand, are expected to remain composed and focused on the home. The idea of honour in combat does not apply as much to a female Unathi, but being seen speaking to an outcast (or 'guwan') as a woman would cause quite a scandal and lower a woman's reputation in the eyes of her clan. Character Name: Sesurka Sskedi Sesurka Sskedi is a daughter of the Wastelander clan Sskedi, a small and unremarkable clan focused on farming and trading their goods with Hegemony visitors. Sesurka was certainly passionate about plants and restoring life to the world around her, but early on began to nurse an interest in another subject; things that moved. It didn't matter if it was a sandbike, a landcrawler, or a car, Sesurka wanted to drive it. Naturally, this un-feminine interest made her something of an iconoclast. Her parents never went so far as to disown her, but they never failed to let her know that her role in society was to be healing and homemaking. Sesurka didn't care. If she wasn't to be appreciated among her clan, she would be appreciated somewhere else. She journeyed to Camp Integrity and made to apply for jobs on corporate starships, hoping she'd be able to see the Spur beyond her tiny, insular home. Sesurka worked hard to gain her mining accredation and piloting qualifications, and before long was mining for Hephaestus Industries all along the Spur. While she found her adventures personally fulfilling, she faced a great deal of racism from other species, and misogyny and condescension from male Unathi that she met. Already a subdued personality, Sesurka became considerably terse and blunt, having little tolerance for ill treatment and holding most at a distance for fear of insults and betrayal. What do you like about this character? I like playing characters who act as the comedic straight man, and who, while initially closed-off due to bad experiences, begin to slowly open up to others around them and display a greater emotional range (allowing for FIRE-FORGED BONDS). I also like playing women who don't conform to gender expectations and struggle to find their niche and personal peace because of it. I would also like to push myself to play a character with serious biases that notably affect how they see other species, and perhaps have the opportunity to grow beyond it. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Pretty good, a 7-8 out of 10. Notes: - Sesurka is Th'akh, and prays most often to Aosr and her ancestors, particularly Ylvitr Sskedi; a former guwandi who it is said found new meaning in life and miraculously healed his childhood illness by observing and working on the growth of plant life during his exile. - Sesurka is a mix of conservative and progressive when it comes to gender roles and species acceptance. She is respectful of other female Unathi and the females of other species who choose to pursue careers other than healing and child-rearing, but she has no enmity to women who choose homemaking, so long as it is voluntary. Ironically, Sesurka has a private condescension towards males who choose more traditionally 'feminine' activities or forms of gender expression. She outright dislikes IPCs, viewing them as a mockery of sapient life, despises Vaurca as any good Wastelander would, and is generally distrustful of Skrell and humans. She is fond of Dionae, due to their role in making Wasteland soil arable. Edited November 15, 2022 by Haydizzle Application processed. Link to comment
Haydizzle
Hello, and thank you for your interest in Unathi! I really like your answers for your questions, but I feel the backstory is somewhat lackluster. Normally this isn't a huge issue; however, the lack of any feedback on your roleplay, I would be hard pressed to accept this application. I'll be denying this application, and you can reapply in two weeks. You are allowed to reuse this application as a base when you reapply, just make sure to expand on your backstory and change any answers to your questions if you feel your responses to them have changed. I have a couple of tips for you as well for reapplying to ensure success. Doing both are not required for success, but doing at least one of these will greatly improve your chances: - Ask people post-round to give you feedback on your application. Positive endorsements about your ability to roleplay show me that you can be trusted to represent the species in a meaningful way; or - Incorporate the themes of the species into Sskedi's backstory. You touch on the themes of the species in responses to the questions as well as your backstory, but you do not explain a lot of them and how they affected her growing up. Approving a whitelist means giving you the capacity to make any Unathi character, so I want to see how you handle using more of the themes of the species! - Making a new application from the ground up. This can be a lot of work, but making an entirely different character can show me how well you can flex your creative muscles. You can reapply on November 27th your time. Thanks again for applying, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing you reapplying! EDIT: I forgot to say, but feel free to DM my deputies or myself either here or on Discord if you have any questions.
