Ckey: Our Lord Spungus

Species you are applying to play: Diona

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Why do you wish to play this specific race:
Gestalt consciousnesses provide an unique challenge for both their writers and the characters interacting with them. At their most alien, Dionae are a species of worms that drink blood and become big smart after doing a reverse human centipede (centipede human?), and then proceed to argue with each other over what they think is right. At their least alien, they're an octopus made of worms that has human intelligence. That's cool. With the recent overhaul of the Eternal, though, I caught a glimpse of something that made me excited with the zeal that only a Mechanicus fan can feel: the Iron Eternal. I already like cultist cyborgs. I like cultist gestalt cyborgs even more.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: With some mindtypes, like singular sounds, the gestalt behaves like a single organism - with others, like Harmonious Hymns, the gestalt behaves like a sovereign nation. There's also the fact that Dionae can grow themselves by assimilating more nymphs, which is something I find very interesting. Specifically, though, what I find interesting is the Iron Eternal- Dionae can be used to augment or replace missing parts of other organisms or ships, but nobody really thinks about Dionae replacing or augmenting themselves. I, however, think that's very cool.

Character Name: Dreams of Steel And Oil

Please provide a short backstory for this character:

Dreams of Steel And Oil began as a nymph named Memory of Smog in a Chaotic Cacophony on Xrim, outside of any of the major settlements. Blessed (or perhaps cursed) with the constant, recurring memory of hot, flowing metal and vast pools of thick black oil, Memory of Smog was soon cast off from its Chaotic Cacophony due to these memories proving unsettling to the other nymphs in the gestalt. Now alone (and not very scared), it began to seek out knowledge on these memories. As it travelled the surface of Xrim, it gathered other nymphs and shared its experience with them, eventually forming into a Tyrannical Tune mindtype, as the nymphs that would eventually become Dreams of Steel And Oil became more and more invested in Memory of Smog's journey. Eventually, Dreams of Steel And Oil happened across the sprawling city of Sanctus, and discovered what it was that plagued Memory of Smog's memories- a vast refinery located deep inside of the Aqoxii mountains that served as a place of worship for the Scorned. The overwhelming feeling of nostalgia rippled through Dreams of Steel And Oil. It was here that they began to follow the Iron Eternal, with a healthy mixture of opinions on whether the Scorned or the Enlightened are correct... However, these opinions are largely irrelevant to them, as Memory of Smog, the overseer nymph, finds equal merit in both the idea that artificial intelligence is the manifestation of the Eternal, and the idea that merging oneself with technology is the way to achieve transcendence. Dreams of Steel And Oil is focused more on synthetic integration than AI worship, but admits that the Scorned have some good ideas. That being said, they have a lingering fear of Glorsh Omega due to Enlightened propaganda.

They would likely be played as a priest, but I could be convinced to have them be a part of Engineering (or potentially a machinist, as, despite their sympathy for the Scorned, they have no issues with subservient synthetics; in the same way that most religions don't prohibit slavery outright, Dreams of Steel And Oil sees no issues with enslaved machines).

What do you like about this character?

I love cyborgs, I love weird gestalt consciousnesses, this is both.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? 8.5/10.

Notes: I need mechanicus slug men...

Hi there, a few questions!

Spoiler

1. You mention finding merits in both the Scorned and Enlightened's version of the Iron Eternal. How do you believe this impacted them whilst on Xrim?

2. Are they considered a citizen of the Covenant of Xrim? I notice you said they fear Glorsh-Omega, so did they voice themselves against it?

3. You make mention to their origins. They appear to have been raised outside of a Cultivation Centre. How did this impact them while on Xrim?

They found it difficult to decide between the two schools' traditions, and would often attend bits and pieces of worship ceremonies from both schools, which didn't earn them many friends. Usually, they were ignored or not spotted. Ultimately this lack of meaningful contact caused them to leave Xrim to avoid the secular nature of life there.

2. Are they considered a citizen of the Covenant of Xrim? I notice you said they fear Glorsh-Omega, so did they voice themselves against it?

They are considered a citizen of the Covenant, and voiced themselves against Glorsh, which added to their lack of friends among either circle.

3. You make mention to their origins. They appear to have been raised outside of a Cultivation Centre. How did this impact them while on Xrim?

Being raised outside of a Cultivation Centre, Dreams of Steel and Oil is fairly small, and wound up being tagged following their arrival in Sanctus. Some time after they left Xrim, they had the tag removed, seeking to grow freely.
