Hackie
BYOND key: Hackie Mhan Character names: Mauvebeard, Bryce Faust How long have you been playing on Aurora?: I was here during its conception, disappeared, and came back in late January. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: Honestly, it's because I want to make the game more interesting, fun and intriguing than it already is. I have decided to stop myself from making a whitelist out of a mixture of laziness and fear of getting flamed. I've decided to do it, and hopefully I'll provide a fun experience for other players. Why did you come to Aurora?: Well, Apollo station split into two servers, and one of which was Aurora. Seeing as I enjoy heavy roleplay and space station 13 as a whole I naturally migrated to Aurora. Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes I have. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is when you go to a virtual game and pretend to be someone else. It is a form of escapism which is very commonplace on Space Station Thirteen as a whole. It's rather interesting because you're taking a bunch of strangers and making them think on how a normal person would react being on a metal deathtrap full of culturally diverse people. Everyone has a plan and backstory for their character which they try to follow and go through with, while the game goes on and other people are doing the same thing. You also try to detach yourself from the character, while trying to act realistic and figuring out what the character would do or, what a normal person would do in a real life scenario similar to it. It plays out like a fan fiction almost, or playing someone else's character, you try to stay faithful to what is written and how you think he should act. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: The Head of Staff is made to be a senior officer and fives players an authority position who can simultaneously instigate in game events for the fun of other players, and ensure that the department underneath them are working efficiently. They are the glue of the department, albeit really cheap glue who can't really do anything. Heads of Staff give players the illusion of a center piece for the department to work, and it is their role to maintain to this illusion so the department remains active and has a scapegoat or guide to advise and command them when the present obstacle is too difficult. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Having a whitelist, in its nature, gives a form of seniority over other players. To be brief, they are like a member of the staff without any of the flashy gizmos. Whitelisted players provide an example of what is expected from a player, and how to uphold those expectations. Like a member of the staff, they are expected to present their thoughts, ideas and messages while attempting to mentor other players in a coherent and lucid manner. In the cases where the whitelisted player inevitably makes a mistake, he/she should attempt to the best of his ability, to fix the mistake and boldly show other players to avoid actions and activities related to it. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Roland Panetta Character age: 61 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Roland wheezed and coughed as he stumbled to the bathroom mirror. He couldn't bare the sight of his face, his body, what he has become. Almost twenty or thirty years ago he was fit and strong. He used to be on magazine covers, go on TV shows, dressed in fine suits and dined on steak imported from Houston. Roland was only a shadow of his former self, a crude imitation. His body used to be covered in muscle and bulk, he was fit and limber. Now, now his gut had turned to a flab of soft fat, he's about as flexible as a statue and his clean, shaved face was replaced by a mangy beard. If you asked him during his time in the army he would say that drinking booze was about the same as drinking bleach, just a slower death. Roland still shaved his head though, he'd go mad if you left him with long hair for more than a couple weeks. Roland slammed his fist into the paved bathroom wall, accompanied by the sound of tiles shattering and falling to the ground. He'd have kept the loyalty implant on 24/7 if it didn't mess with his thoughts so much, it made him rather scared at first, now it felt awkward. It was as if a force compelled him to do something he didn't want to, forcing him to give an order that he didn't want to give. Roland came to his senses and stumbled over to a closet built into the wall of the Odin. His quarters were clean, he always kept his quarters clean. It gave Roland the illusion that he still had some of the soldier in him. But, what he hated most in the morning was seeing the bottles sprawled across his room every morning, after a night of drinking. It was a cruel reminder of how he gave into drinking booze after a hard day of work, no matter how much he didn't want to. Roland tried to quit the bottle, he really did. But, he always caved in, he always started with a small drink, then turned to another and so on and so on. He slid his jumpsuit out of the closet and laid it on the bed. Roland slid off his stained tank top and boxers, and slid on a fresh pair of beige boxers. His chest was covered in scars, he could tell the story of each and everyone of them. Roland zipped on his jumpsuit and placed on his captain's hat, the jumpsuit was too tight but, it made him feel like he was a little more fit and thin. Roland slid his ID card on the door exiting his quarters, and sauntered to the shuttle. People walked by, some were young, some were old. It made him think of his son, and his divorced wife. The son who became a research director and loved to stay inside rather than go shoot guns and explore the outdoors with Roland. The wife who scorned him, and made him feel almost as miserable as his father did. Roland Panetta was born on the continent of Astraeus on Biesel, in a small town in the countryside North East of Mendell City, named New Hope. The town was rather small in comparison to most settlements surrounding it, the population clocked in at nearly 60 000 and had a reputation for sprawling farms, a Naval Base and the finest steak in the galaxy. At a young age of nine, Roland's mother had died of dysentery, which was taken for nothing more than a fever. Roland's father had spiraled down from the happy, caring father he knew to an alcoholic. His father often times would grow very angry if Roland interacted with him at all, and had taken to isolating himself from anyone. The few times he did interact with Roland were in his fits of crying, and he would tell his son about his life in a pitiful state. His father for years would manage the cyborgs and farm equipment, in pure silence, aside from issuing commands. When Roland turned fourteen years old his father had began opening up, his fits of sadness turned to times where he would actively humiliate and attempt to degrade his son for his severe acne and being overweight. Roland spent his late teens focusing on his studying, and doing martial arts in an attempt to lose weight, fueled by his hatred of his belligerent father. He actively pursued a role as a pilot in the Sol Alliance Navy, and throughout college he went through multiple courses to pursue the profession. At twenty-four years old Roland Panetta learned of his father's diagnosis of prostate cancer, and on his deathbed he requested for reconciliation, which Roland denied. This had made Roland feel, indifferent. All the anger and hatred he pent up because of his father's verbal abuse, all the death wishes he made for him, he thought his death would make him happy, make him feel joy. But, there was nothing, he felt a little empty because of it. What drove him anymore? He was a navy pilot, he would be serving the Sol Alliance and getting paid money doing what he loved, flying. So, Roland continued, and throughout his service his goal was to use the skills he learned in the navy to have a job as a captain on a NanoTrasen vessel, and live a comfy life with a beautiful wife and a trio of kids, who would be active and love the outdoors. What do you like about this character?: Roland Panetta is a washed up character, he can be compared to the likes of Robert Baratheon. He used to be an amazing pilot, he used to have an edge and discipline. But, that younger version of himself is gone, and he clings to the thought he can be what he was, that he can fix all his mistakes. What do you dislike about this character?: He has devolved into a repeat of his father, he has some qualities as a person I abhor, and detest. Self-destructive behavior being one of them. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Roland used to be the exemplary Security Officer, he was the perfect material for a Captain when he was younger. In an out of character perspective, he is kind of meant to be a light hearted captain, be a little more fun for the round and kind of the future version of some other captains like Dawkins and Nick Straughan. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: 7/10, I need to be more flexible in roleplaying characters. Extra notes: Alright, I'm going to explain simply why I'm not using one of my characters. None of them I think are able to approach the role, they either are not developed enough or have reached the end of their story and are now playing second fiddle. Also, by the last two paragraphs I was rather burnt out, so I kept it brief and simple to kind of give you the rough idea of who he is. Crescentise
This is one of the most intimate and 'real' backstories I've ever read. This isn't just a spaceman background, it's a background which many many many people go through in real life. People don't usually use such stories for their characters, though, because it's not glamorous enough. Fie! Anyway. An actually old head of staff, the 'future self' of the dashing young upstarts we're full to the brim with, would be a wonderful breath of fresh air. I have no doubt that Hackie could pull it off - he has quite the talent for playing flawed, grizzled old men. His answers on this application are serious and in depth, I don't particularly remember many bad decisions made by his characters in the past. Put it this way: Hackie deserves this whitelist way more than several individuals who have one already. Link to comment
