Xelnagahunter's Head of Staff Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND key: Xelnagahunter

Character names: Xel Carin, Vel Carin, Qwerty, (I am creating one for this application)

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Two to three months.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I tend to play after a work shift and during those late night hours there are never many heads of staff, particularly a Head of Personnel. I'd like to help round out those roles during that time to help everyone have more fun.

Why did you come to Aurora?: I was escorted here when a friend was showing me to play the game. I've never played a legit round on any other server as what I've seen from them, I dislike.

Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes, I have.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: I could define roleplay as per the term, but I feel this is more for what it is to me personally, so here goes. I use roleplay as an escape. It's a chance to be something you aren't for a bit and to interact with others who enjoy something similar to you. Some people use books or art, I use video games and role playing. Role playing should be about the story, the collected narrative of all persons involved. It's a way for everyone to have fun and for creative writing to be expressed in a way that allows people to enjoy reading everything they can see.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: To ensure that their departments are able to have fun without breaking the immersion of the role play. Each head of staff has it's department and denying everything or even accepting everything can hinder the fun of some people involved in that department. They should be prime examples of staying in character as well, not allowing outside influences or personal relation ships effect what their characters perceive.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: I'm not 100% sure on this part, but I have a clear view of the kind of person I want to be as a whitelisted player. A whitelisted player should always set a positive example, they were chosen and people look up to them for it. They should be helpful and courteous. I plan to show restraint where it is advised, action where it is needed, and to be ready to help someone figure something out, even if I don't know anything about it myself. This is not to say I will perfectly be able to help everyone, but I'd like to do my best.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name:Eric Derringer

Character age:42

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Derringer grew up on Bissel, living a hard life without much to his name. His parents were killed at an early age and he didn't take to foster care very well. He spent much of his time in an orphanage, one where the operators cared litle for the children and more for the money. Bullies were in charge there and Eric was quick to sort them out when he arrived. He always to to helping the smaller kids not get pushed around. When he was old enough to leave he went straight into looking for work with local authorities. He quickly landed an internship and using credit from that boosted his way into academy.

After a many years serving as an officer of the law, the last few seeing him in charge of a station himself, he retired from the line of work. Corperations were the thing now and more people targeted them for hot zones than governing bodies. HE signed up with NT and joined the security force there, making a name for himself across several stations as a kind heart with a mean sense of justice. His no nonsense attitude, but willingness to help out, landed him a job as HoS. Now in his 40's, a few years past his time spent as HoS, he's requested a change. He feels that his injuries on the job have reduced his effectiveness for it. He'd like to help the civilian personnel more at this stage in his life and recently requested a change to HoP, a change that comes with reassignment to Odin in Bissel Space and with workloads on the NSS Aurora.

What do you like about this character?: He has a strong sense of right and wrong and understands how to properly follow orders, both in word and spirit. He is kind and fair, but that extends to all parties equally. If being fair means someone doesn't get their way, then so be it.

What do you dislike about this character?: I'm going to re-interpret this as "what are his flaws". If I didn't like the character the way I built him, he'd be different. Moving on though, he's sometimes too nice. HE also understands rank and role and follows it with perfection, which is a flaw because he might be less likely to take charge in an emergency, deferring to others who know what they are doing easily.

What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He's intelligent, hard working, kind, and capable.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I would say I am average. I'm still learning much of the lore behind everything so I don't know tons of things, and I have been known to type slow (which hinders RPing with fast typers sometimes), but I feel I can hold my own.

Extra notes: I'm trying very hard to learn as much as I can as fast as I can. I know I've not been here long but I feel I can play the role based on what I've learned by reading, asking on the forums, and by working closely with other HoP characters and the Captain.

I've only interacted briefly with Vel Carin. He is one of those regular assistant types, and stuck out to me because he was simultaneously grey-suited and perfectly literate, as well as actively seeking to learn and assist. From this little experience I would certainly agree that you can hold your own with arpee. I have noticed and appreciated that, like Vel, you've been trying hard to learn things and participate in the community; I think it makes you deserve the whitelist more than the average Joe who just wants to play head. Even if for some reason you go wrong, I have a feeling you would acknowledge the problem and try to learn from it rather than arguing tooth and nail about it. c:

Okay, so, I haven't see you, but that's fine, because I haven't see alot of people.

So in lou (lu? Loo? Whatever) of first hand experience, I'm going to ask some questions:

1: Based on what you've seen of other heads of staff, what do you want to do differently?

2: Based on what you've seen of other heads of staff, what are you going to steal incorporate from their style into yours?

3: What's one cool idea you want to do but haven't had the chance because you didn't have a head of staff white list?

EXTRA CREDIT: Tell me a story story about your character and a mouse?

Thanks. I'm glad I've been seen in that positive light.

Ok. I'm horrible at stuff like this and was worried about my application in general for it, but here goes.

1: I'd like to emphasize more on teamwork and cooperative communications. The many times I've been an AI or work closely with a captain or HoP, I've noticed a discordance in the way they interact. It may be as simple as granting verbal permission to do something without addressing other heads, especially for out of department issues. I'd like to work on positive communication that keeps everyone in the loop as much as possible.

2: This is the hard one. I've watched Raymond Galloway quite a bit and I like his approach to doing what is needed of him and stepping away when it's in another head's turf. I feel that it's important to have that style, and I very much so with to incorporate it.

3: It's less about cool ideas and more about functionality. YEah, I want a chance to be "in charge," but it's more about being able to fill in missing roles. Granted I will only fill in what I know, which in this case is 99% HoP stuff. I'm trying hard to learn science to an art and next in engineering, thus I'll be able to get heads for those roles as well. I doubt I'll ever be a CMO though, the medical stuff confounds me.

Extra Credit: I've not much experience with other mice. However, I have been buzzing around as a mouse a few times. Most recently I observed and moused a round because a particular character that I love to annoy was on. So I pop in and instantly head to robotics to bother Emily Alberg. The only vent that you can crawl out of there is in the surgical area, so it drives her bonkers that there is a mouse in a sterile environment. It leads to her demanding that I leave and me squeaking no and obscenities. It eventually leads to chases. Well she happened to have a Tajaran in the mech bay at the time and whoa was that fun. I had to run from this giant cat thing. Eventually I got out into the research halls and noticed a cat shaped pAI in the RD office and someone opened the door for it. That was a chase and a half. It led to about a half hour of running and yelling while it tried to pounce me. After ending back in the mech bay a few times I was finally done in while typing LOOC. A drone came up and mutilated me and munched my body for minerals... In the end I got to be emily's pAI and chose a mouse for my expanded form. =D fun round.

Those were good answers. My only bit of minor criticism is that being an RD isn't just about knowing all the science material; it's about loving the research process, and wanting to make it as fun and interesting for people as possible, and opening up new opinions of coordinated department research.

I'm really looking to be a Head of Personnel right now. Beyond that, I won't chose to be a head of staff in a department I don't love. Medical confounds me, so I won't be a CMO, likely ever. I enjoy playing in science and I just need to learn it so that I can actually help as an RD. CE is something I'm meh about. I like engineering but I don't have the love for it that I do for Science. HoS is probably something I'll avoid unless I take a strictly command approach because I'm very unrobust. Any HoS characters I play will likely be older and incapable of reacting, simply gaining the promotion in place of retirement. I don't really intend to Captain, but who knows what the future holds.
