Lua Saudosa's 'Lucky' Chip

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

BYOND Key: Killerhurtz

Character name: Lua Saudosa

Item name: Either "Lua's Chip" , "Lucky Chip" or "Plastic Chip"

Why is your character carrying said item to work?

It is part of the new contract binding her to work for Nanotrsen - as it stands, it is an item that holds a near-field communication chip, which in turns holds the authorization codes necessary for Lua's function, and as such it is not possible for her to do anything if it is not slotted behind her ear. It is experimental technology, and it's success will affect future models of her production.

Item function(s): Mechanically? None. Well, almost none - needs to be ear-wearable (but doesn't need an actual visible sprite on character). Lore/story/IC-wise? Lua literally cannot function without this item on her person, as it is a form of NFC authentification chip that ensures that she is not compromised.

Item description: How long am I allowed?

If short description: "Some sort of engraved plastic coin. The words 'One key, ten thousand minds' is molded into it's rim."

If long description: "A round, grey, plastic object - a chip or coin of some sort. On one side there is a logo engraved into it, though it is not familiar. On the other, the words 'One key, ten thousand minds' surround engraved text much too small to read."

Item appearance: Looks like a silver coin. Maybe a bit darker.

Additional comments: For simplicity's sake, I have an actual IC reason why she comes to the Aurora with the chip in her bag, if she does. She has basic, authorization-free code that allows her to insert it on arrival, and she is technically deactivated before arrival for ease of transportation.

Are you sure this sounds like a good idea for your own enjoyment? I feel like in situations, you will not follow through with what you claim the custom item does because it'll lead to frustration and literally being unable to play.

I don't do things without due consideration. Yes, this item is technically a major handicap - but I feel it's exactly why I want this item. Most people have something sentimental or historical. My item is fundamental to the function, it's a weakness, it's a part of what my character is.

So yes, I am sure. It's something to talk about, it's something for antags to exploit to get RP out of my character (and any characters involved with it), and I fully intend to follow through with everything this item entails.

(On the flipside, if antags DO use it - it's actually an advantage - I'd rather be 'dead' and coinless than actually dead and need a transplant)

Wow, this is... weird. Kinda reminds me of the platinum chip from FNV, except said chip actually is an anchor to keep your character alive.

At the very least, I will say this is very interesting. Not sure how to go about it myself, since... Well, I'm not sure what you want from it.

When the chip separates from your character, do they outright die, or do they just go 'unconscious'?

Technically unconscious - how I see it happening is that upon removal of the chip, all I will allow myself to do is say "Unit deactivating - please insert authentication chip". And only once, as an 'emergency protocol'. Then I put my character to 'sleep' until the chip is reinserted.

And hell - I've already done it for a past IPC, so with that chip, I would even be down RPing with an antag, the chip being emagged and Lua becoming a puppet for them.

And what I want from it? Lore, pure and simple. Lore and opportunity to reveal it, even though my character won't actually remember it.

Oh, you mean something like this from Fallout New Vegas? Except just with other words on it? (I don't think that idea is an all out great thing)

Doesn't this chip seem more of a liability rather than helpful? I mean, he shuts down upon removal of the chip, that doesn't seem quite wise and more harmful to situations than helpful.

And hell - I've already done it for a past IPC

Then, what is the issue? It does not seem to have a large impact on the RP other than you shutting down, however I don't believe most crew members would even know about your chip unless you told them of it. So, it doesn't seem like it would come into play into the RP as much as you think it would.

Alright, first things first.

The platinum chip comparison was already made. I'll admit it's not entirely different even though I wasn't thinking of it when I made this application - though a major difference is that securitrons were upgraded with the chip while Lua cannot function without it.

Second, yes the chip is a liability - I've tackled it with this: http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=3822#p38379

And third, I meant the "RP being compromised by being emagged", not the "having an item that keeps the character conscious part".

And it would a lot more - because while you're perfectly right that during extended, unless someone knew about it or had any reason to arrest Lua, it would have no impact. But if Security/an antag intercept Lua? They do a search, if not outright strip characters - and it would come into play by then.

And even then, during extended - there could be accidents like meteors or accidental contact with acid that causes damage where it comes up (if the chip's not destroyed).

I'm willing to accept this under two conditions:

1) Failure to abide by the rules imposed on your own custom item will lead to you losing it. If there's a change and it no longer does what it used to, to your character, then notify me and SoundScopes first.

2) If you want an antag to convert you through emags, then first and foremost you clear it up with administration beforehand. If they say no for some reason, then accept it, and move along.
