Job Ban Appeal

BYOND Key: Seven Ghost

Total Ban Length: Indefinite Job Ban

Banning staff member's Key: FFrances

Reason of Ban: I don't have access to the exact statement, but it was for multiple instances of behavior that constituted self-antagging.

Reason for Appeal: Following the ban I took time to step back from my committed character and role as well as Command and took two weeks to play as a subordinate. For the majority of those two weeks I played an assistant and nursing intern without much access or equipment, focused on social engagement and low power positions. Following this I took a break from SS13 in general to focus on other things and cogitate my own feelings and thoughts about the server and what I've learned.

I let stress from dealing with repeat chucklefucks and general command issues effect my behavior and adopted an attitude of reserved arrogance to any reproach for my own misgivings. I grew over familiar with the abuse of high access equipment and consulted the administration and moderation staff rarely. I've reacted too strongly to provocation and allowed it to goad me into behavior unbecoming of a Command officer.

I'll underline a few points about how I'll behave differently

1) A simple and resolute pledge to refrain from self-antag behavior.

2) If I'm ever at a loss as to if my particular course of action is self-antagging I'm going to ahelp ask the server staff, grey areas most of all

3) I'm going to pace myself in Command roles, monitor my stress levels and take breaks if I've observed myself giving in to irrationality.

4) When addressed OOCly about anything I may have done wrong, even if its not polite, I'm going to be less dismissive and engage the discussion earnestly.

I'd like to end this on a less formal note. I miss Science, both the job itself and the people in it. I felt a great deal of pride in my department and a genuine care for my team, many of whom I have not interacted with in a great deal of time. I had slowly built a culture of cooperation and trust and brought many repeat regulars to the department and I'm afraid my absence caused by misbehavior has allowed that to fall apart. I'd love nothing more than to be able to play my preferred role with my best friends in my favorite department again, but only after this issue has been comfortably addressed by those involved.

I would like to put my support behind this. From what I've seen - and, considering the ridiculous amount of time I spend in this game, I've seen a fair bit - Seven has stopped engaging in self-antag behavior. I think that their break from their usual role has done them well; The stress from playing a command role, I'd imagine, would be quite high. I have enjoyed the character that Seven has been playing during this time, both playing with and observing them, and I think that they've learned from their mistakes. And seriously? Without the guidance of a RD, science has fallen apart and become less fun to play. I am sure that after this period of time, they will be able to return to this role without repeating the mistakes that led to this.I do hope the staff agree with this, as it is down to their decision.

Why am I writing this right now it is so late I've forgotten half my vocabulary already

Let's start with one issue which still concerns me and I'd like you to address:

When I jobbanned you. There was a complain thread, in which we discussed your behavior a fair bit. At the end of it, I gave you a last chance; you said you were planning to quit science for a bit, I replied whether you decided to own up to your behavior now or take a break first was up to you, but I didn't want to resort to a jobban if you recognized your problem.

Shortly after that, on the same day, you came back into science (as a Skrell character, if memory serves me right) and started chucking grenades at security for no reason other than to "test their reflexes and ability to react in an unexpected situation". I would like to know why that happened, given you said you were going to take a break from science a bit before.

To clarify that situation a bit, I was holding a sleep toxin grenade in my pocket which I triggered in a crowd of six officers in a misguided attempt to gauge their reactions, arrest procedure and sentencing.

The intention wasn't a hostile one, I meant to be a Skrell social scientist that resorted to extreme methods to study human behavior. However, that was a bad idea. A concept like that isn't fun, and outside of antag roles isn't feasible for cooperative roleplay. I had signed on as a scientist to take a step back from RD, but it wasn't really a step back far enough. I had a hard time letting go of Science completely even when it was necessary.

Edit: I applied that same "social scientist skrell" concept in a less destructive manner and ended up creating a much more amusing and popular character as a result. Ulaj Oolg never once set off any kind of grenades or attacked anyone outside of an antag role and my own and everyone else's experience was better for it.

I sort of have to see this as a major lapse of judgement.

Two main things which I thought we had agreed on were broken here. The first was that you were not to play science for some time (on a self-imposed restriction, and the social scientist was attempt to partly restrict that, I understand). But the second was that playing with science toys, especially weapons, in unusual ways, had been causing a lot of issues. I would have thought that a few hours after having a conversation about that, you would have known better than to throw a grenade of any kind in a crowd of six people.

Am I wrong?

Yes, this is accurate.

There are other circumstances at work here that I'm reluctant to state. In those few hours a major.. restructuring of my IRL social life had taken place. This shouldn't have effected my IC behavior, but it did.

I offer no excuses for that. Its why I took this long to write the appeal, I felt like I needed to take my lesson into full account and mend my routines before appealing.

Whoops, didn't reply to that.

Well, that's more than excusable. Will give people a few to write their thoughts, but if no one else opposes, I'll lift this Saturday.

I thought I'd finally throw in a word or two about how I perceive you, Seven Ghost.

All of us in the Aurora Community can understand that real life issues can be unignorable at times, but that is usually the time that one would close down their game-or find a slower, less-engaging job/character-and take your time to deal with things.

As it has already been stated in this thread, when your complaint was put up and you were given a last chance, you explained that you would take a break from science and take things easier, I was not only surprised but pretty offended to watch you join the same day as a Skrell who took it upon themselves to gas the robotics lab and engage in a manhunt with security. When you were finally caught, you made the choice to go so far as to gas six security officers and then attempt to further flee before I detained you. Knowing that character was yours, and as I had been following your complaint thread, I was disgusted. I know that this has all been discussed before earlier in the thread, but I'd like to state that each and every one of us should expect a -little- better from someone who was asking for one last chance.

I really like it when people make huge improvements in their behavior after they're confronted with these situations. But the way you simply joined that round and instantly began working on gassing a whole sector of a department with knock-out gas, I not only personally feel like you simply disregarded the prosecutions against you after you were let off without a punishment, but I feel like you disrespected the staff and players trying to give you another chance.

So, as someone who has witnessed a lot of your behavior firsthand, I do not support this ban being lifted for a long. Time. I know it's harsh, but a last chance was presented to you already and you disregarded it. Maybe after a few months you'll miss science so much that when you receive the job again you'll appreciate the privelege it really is, and not abuse it as a right. Until then, I can only see this appeal as another fake statement that you won't abuse science - the first being your explaination on your complaint that you would 'take a break from science', which you clearly didn't.

Sorry, and please don't hate me. I just haven't seen enough honesty from your last topics for me to trust what you're saying.

(I also typed this on a horrible samsung tablet, so the wording and spelling is probably terrible.)

I understand where you're coming from and I don't fault you Hive. Though I'd like to say that I've been nothing but polite in all of my interactions and infractions with the administration staff, I did disrespect them with my sudden 180 on a gas bomb. This wasn't something I did flippantly and forgot about it, the realization stayed with me and guided me for the month that its been since the incident occurred.

I've personally apologized to a number of people in private messages to explain circumstances a bit better outside of the public stage, where I find it harder to be openly emotional. I'd also like to say that unless any of us are ghosts or mods on a constant basis, we only see a fraction of anyone's behavior. I wager you've interacted with me a lot these past few weeks without knowing it.

All in all though, I respect your opinion and wouldn't fault you for it. Outside circumstances aside, it would be difficult to take any further word from me and I can see that. I'm going to make instead a very plain appeal for mercy.

This whole situation means more to me than is apparent and if you wish to know more I appeal to you to contact me over Byond or forum posts.

I'm more for taking a forgiving approach. Though we might sometimes seem like the unstoppable arms of justice, we really are not.

Well, no. I assign punishment based on what makes sense. Basically, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the game without fucking up.

Seven Ghost has proven to be temperamental on one instance, and ignore staff judgement in an outburst. It is something he has apologized for, and clearly acknowledged. We all fuck up sometimes, and I understand getting upset. If this was a common occurrence, I would be a lot more severe in keeping the ban. But for now, it is not.

I hope that explains my justifications behind lifting the ban. The way I see it, keeping it in place doesn't achieve anything - bans are not dissuasive; they serve either as a reformation and communication tool (both to stop you from doing the thing while you reevaluate your life choices, and to let you know we're really serious about not doing the thing), or as a way to flat out prevent users from doing things (that would usually be a perma). And I actually tend to be nice with unbanning proven the user submitting the request doesn't act like a complete idiot - but you can be sure we will come down hard on anybody abusing this leniency, and already have before.
