BYOND Key: MrPedantic

Character Names: Eli Rutherford

Species you are applying to play: Unathi

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Incredibly Dark Blue to the point its could be mistaken for black

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes three times over two days. Making notes as I go.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: I have a great love for playing characters that aren't humans in any RP system, the chance to roleplay out alternate ways of life that are at their core different to human ones, and the chance to express emotions via alternate methods and be able to think unique ways to problem solve and the like through methods unavailable to humans. Out of the races available on this server I find the Unathi the most interesting seeming to play, I also when thinking through the other characters and reading over their lore I came up with the most interesting character for a Unathi.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: They are a race that has for one, only really in the last 24 years known advanced space technology which is very much in living memory for many of them. They also have the whole idea of very traditionalist culture that echoes through all walks of their life, their focus on Honor and respect is far more pressing than it is with any standard modern Human society. From their focus on close quaters fighting seeing ranged combat as a lesser form, to their views on social norms roles and importance put on things such as meals that to most humans is a thing of necessity only. Also your a large lizard person, you have to factor in how you display emotion and those small characterizing actions that make your character from a 2d sprite to something believable in a way befitting your look and physicality as appose to that of a human.

Character Name: Rhyfelwr-Ogof-Siaman

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Hatched in the Year 2,409 on Mohges. He was the child of the the most educated Unathi is his clan, their clan was a very small clan called Cleddyf . His Father was essentially the modern equivalent of the Clan Shaman, indeed many of the more traditionalist members of the clan called him the Shaman, he indeed played a religious role teaching the ways of the Th'akh (the chosen religion of this particular clan) as well as being the closest thing to a spiritual leader they had, apart from that they were highly respected and would spend most their day going around the clan helping clan members with whatever they were struggling with, and the rest of it learning so to better help his clan, Rhyfelwr was taught be his mother with guidance from his Father to be eventually able to take the job of his Father, and in the year 2,422 he did just that at the age of 13 with the passing of his Father shortly followed by the passing of his mother the following year. However he did not get long to enjoy his new job. For although he did well in the two years he got in the year 2,424 the much larger neighboring clan that enclosed his clans territory on three sides called Grafanc Clan, proclaimed Honorable revenge for a wrong done to them a century gone when apparently a beloved daughter of the clan leader of the time, (a clan leader who's family had long slid into obscurity) had been disgracefully divorced by the old leader of Rhyfelwr's clan after she had try'd to subvert them into becoming part of the larger Grafanc Clan. With this they move quickly rushing into the lands of the Cleddyf clan and cutting down the warriors who stood, and destroying the weapons and armour of those who didn't, it was a brutal and efficient maneuver, they simultaneously took over Cleddyf Clan, while cutting off any escape meaning no one outside of these two clans would ever know of their actions, the two clans being remote enough that even with the limited modern communication brought out this far, they still remained largely unaffected and unconnected with outside Unathi society.

The poor Unathi of Cleddyf clan along with Rhyfelwr were soon put to work by their new masters as miners in the rather valuable coal and iron mines found in the hills and mountains surrounding their lands. They were kept in secret by Grafanc Clan, as no better than slaves, miss treated and forced to work. This greatly hurt the Unathi of Cleddyf clan as they saw their treatments as dishonorable and despicable, many of them looked to Rhyfelwr who kept up his work as their spiritual leader and guide attempting to help them through the hardship they suffered and force mine labor. He was now looked up to more and more as the actual leader of the clan now, with the loss of the old clan's leading family, slaughtered by the warriors of Grafanc Clan. As such he spent the next 8 years leading a group of disgruntled and Dishonored Unathi and miraculously managed to keep them level headed, well as level headed as Unathi in such a state could be, and from trying to rebel against the Grafanc Clan. Of cause Rhyfelwr was a honorable warrior along with everything else, and so was the rest of his clan forced to work as slaves as they were. So although they may have seemed broken from the outside, secretly at night they would train using their mining tools as replacements for their glaives, keeping up as many warrior traditions as they could without drawing attentions, and as the warriors of Grafanc Clan got lazy and complacent, the Warriors of Cleddyf Clan, became more honed and more motivated to bring Honor back to all of their names. And so on the 28th of September 2432 As the members of Cleddyf Clan were picking up their tools and entering the Mines for the morning, they instead of the signal of Rhyfelwr turned their picks and shovels on their captors. breaking their way through the more heavily armoured guards before using their claws to tear their way through who ever was left. On this day there was brutal combat all across the side of the Largest Mountain in the territory of Grafanc Clan. But by night fall Cleddyf Clan had declared itself anew, and held the mine shafts and surrounding structures as their new territory, quickly using mined out stone to build basic fortifications, creating a fort from which they defied Grafanc Clan. Rhyfelwr was hailed as a great champion by his clan members, and their clan finally knew joy after 8 hard years.

But this was short lived two days passed with little conflict. But then the warriors of Grafanc Clan came with another dishonorable trick, they lined up a legion of their warriors and began to march towards to the fort walls of Cleddyf Clan, who prepared to leap into the lines claws and tools swinging. But at a range of about 600 feet, they stopped and crouched down, from behind the front line, a new line of infantry were revealed, these were carrying large bulky rifles capable of firing rounds akin to anti tank rounds of 21st century earth guns. Rhyfelwr still has no idea where these were attained from. But the damage was devastating, Many proud Unathi of Clan Cleddyf fell in the first Barrage. Many more fell in the continued firing afterwards. But not to be defeated Rhyfelwr lead a large portion of the surviving warriors through the mine shafts, to tunnels they had secretly dug to further down the face of the mountain while still being in servitude. They erupted from behind the lines of Grafanc Clan and with tooth and claw tore their way through their lines. Still the victory was a meager one. With so many losses the surviving members of Cleddyf Clan knew they could not stand an all out attack by the many remaining Warriors of Grafanc Clan. But this is when it hit Rhyfelwr one of the things they used to mine was a significant amount of dynamite, and they still had control of some of the stocks in the fort. they didn't have enough to blow up the armies of Grafanc Clan, but the mountain they were situated on was large and tall, and had a large outcropping of rock from its peak. And so that night under cover of darkness Rhyfelwr and a few of his finest warriors sneakily ascended to the top of the mountain and set the charges, while the rest of the clan retreated deep into the mines. At the break of day the Large bulk of the Grafanc Clan's forces marched up the Mountain side to meet the survivors of Cleddyf Clan. But they were not faced with Unathi, but wall adorned in insults. As they stood their in confusion a large bang and thundering was heard from the far above as if they spirits of those who had died had shouted in angry unison. And down upon their heads cascaded many rocks, but they did not stop their, a landslide of rocky death slid into the towns below and most of Grafanc Clan was wiped out i the catastrophic event. Those who were not were beset upon a few hours later by the Warriors of Cleddyf Clan. The Cleddyf Clan had won, it had its lands back and more, and had beaten the Dishonorable and terrible Grafanc Clan. But they couldn't be happy with their victory. They had killed their enemies in a Most Dishonorable method, many of them had been hiding at the time, and the enemy had no fighting chance in it, as well as that many who did not fight were also killed in the rock fall. To top this all off many of their own clan was already dead, and they didn't have the members to survive alone out here and rebuild as well.

They needn't have feared for being alone though, such a mighty explosion and land slide could not go unnoticed, and that night trucks with Unathi from the more advanced closer to City Clans came investigating, and the sights they saw dismayed them. Suffice to say Cleddyf Clan had much explaining, and many of them couldn't live with what they had done. Some even took on Guwandi, most of the clan remained loyal to Rhyfelwr, still great full for all he had done for them, but some could never forgive him for what he had mad their clan do. It was hard for the remaining members of Cleddyf Clan, most other Unathi hardly considered them a Clan anymore or that much better than Guwan, certainly none were willing to help or offer supplies to them. they were scorned by most. And many more of the remaining members left to become Guwandi. Soon Cleddyf Clan found themselves few, trying to scrape a living fishing in the lakes near the devastated land of their old home.

Then came the first human contact, Rhyfelwr heard about these amazing advanced aliens from passing traders and was excited, there were people from outside of his culture, and maybe a chance to go somewhere in life. So he and his few loyal set out towards Skalamar were he heard allot of them were gathering. It was a long and hard journey from across about a third of the planet and took a year, but they eventually got there running into many troubles along the way. But there was no way the Clans in this city were going to allow them to just waltz up to the Aliens, so they found themselves working on the quite for one of the larger clans under the Izweski banner. They found support in one of the guilds, and it time Rhyfelwr started to learn alot about modern machinery ascending to the role of a competent and respected engineer relatively quickly. However before Rhyfelwr ever got to even speak to a Human or Skrell the year was 2438.

And such The contact war broke out, and Rhyfelwr found himself in the Izweski army fighting back the Traditionalist Coalition, although looked down on many of the other soldiers for is essentially Clan less status he Became a very successful warrior on the battle field wielding a energy glaive, this is also where he first wielded guns both more tradition ballistic weapons and energy guns. He was not a fan, he disliked it like many Unathi seeing no honor or glory from cutting down your enemy from afar, and he would only fire at limbs, while he closed the gap, to slay his foe with claw and cqb weapons alike. He had a brief stint after some severe casualties on the front line he was on, at wearing a slightly damaged MK1 Breacher Suit as the actual soldiers meant to be wearing it were all dead. But he mostly found himself fighting with his energy glaive diving into entrenched enemy positions and cutting down his foes. It was here he developed his unique "honorable" way of killing, he would mostly target limbs and go try to cause massive but none lethal damage, to his foes, until he had got them onto their last legs, quite literally sometimes, then he would take his time delivering one quick final blow to the throat to finish them, he would also remember every Unathi he killed and even if they had fallen with ease he would honor their death and memory when he next got the chance even if he didn't know the name, as he though was important, from both his religious background and for to pay the respects he thought they were due.( a tradition he continues to this date with who ever he kills). But being a front line fighter in such a brutal conflict was not a easy life or safe life, and indeed he had seen much combat previous and still bored some miner injuries from long past fights. throughout the duration of this war he saw many a injury, from small cuts and bruises, to being caught with deep rending wounds by glaives once, and three times he was shot in the arms and chest in a way as to bring him down for that particular fight. Medical tech luckily on the Izweski side was better than for the Traditionalist Coalition, and he found himself back up soon afterwards, although again these were but more long term drags on his physical fitness even wounds healed still leave their scar through the pain and aches they cause. in the early days of the year 2439 he got in a particularly nasty scrap with a large Unathi who ended up clawing his eye out, as well as causing massive damage across the side of his face, as he fell though the large Unathi was gunned down by fellow soliders, and he lived on, but now if he was incapable of fighting with the same finesse and ferocity as before. But his war was soon over anyway.

Atomic weaponry started to be used in 2439 and Rhyfelwr would fight no further. (which inadvertently saved his life probably) This was not his fight at this point. Such weapons were completely Dishonorable and he would have no part of any war that involved them. So he stood back and watched as his world burned. After the war ended soon after he was in a true state of plight, unsure where to go, again with no home, and now his considered many of his race and own people unforgivably dishonorable for what they had done. And worst of all he now could see how the people he had lead who had left him for such things as Guwandi felt about him. This was just what he had done on a much larger scale. So at the age of 30 he was about ready to die. He was on the verge of Guwandi himself. But then he saw a rally near the space port in Skalamar for a group of honorable warrior Unathi to go to space with this upstart space captain, and help Hunt the dishonorable Unathi and other types of raiders and space pirates out there who fight dishonorably and attack the innocent and steal for a living. And he saw a purpose he could have again. And so from the summer year of 2440 he found himself part of all Unathi Private mercenary company protecting merchant ships from space pirates. As well as hunting down particularly notorious criminal crews. It took him a while to train to fight in his new state and although he was still a competent fighter he definitely was not the best on his crew, and was seen more as a engineer for the ship in day to day life, still he could hold his own in a fight and with the support of his warrior crew mates he managed to make it through the combat life style. By 2450 they had many successful voyages under their belts and were drawing the attention directly of mega-corps who wanted protection for their high value cargo as its moved between systems, and so they found themselves being payed rather large sums for big jobs, and further getting their name known, "The Sword of anrhydedd". They used the typical Unathi strategy of prow first ram followed by quick and brutal boarding and cqb.

After a while they found themselves in the Tau Ceti System from the year 2454 on wards hunting down various raider groups who would try and Harass Nano Transen and they were doing so effectively and getting and being payed fairly well for it, when it all went wrong once again. They were on a pretty standard hunt out a a group of raiders in an asteroid belt that they liked to hide in, but upon finding these raiders and assulting them their ship was suddenly fired upon by a third party while most of the crew including Rhyfelwr were on board the raider vessel. The Merc companies ship was instantly torn to sunder by the immense fire power unloaded, and the last thing Rhyfelwr saw was a red and black ship cruel pointed looking ship pulling towards them, at which point it fired another salvo into the raider ship this time luckily for Rhyfelwr into the engine and command areas at the back, while he was at the front, the resulting ship damage still ended up knocking him clean out. He woke up in the broken remains of the ship a day later hurt but with his EVA suit still in tact and his O2 supplies low but keeping him alive, from here there was no sign of the red and black ship and him and the other 20 or so survivors from the ship front, some of which were raiders who had no fight left in them, managed to get onto an emergency escape shuttle still intact in what little was left of the mercenaries vessel and fly to a nearby civilian station. Once again he had was wondering if it was his time to die. he was 47 coming up to 48 now, not so young anymore, he knew he was no longer on the top of his physical peak of fighting ability.

He spent much of the next few days "speaking to the spirits of his old clan for guidance" and so on. In this time he had much time to reflect and thought that, the worst thing he could do now was give up and dishonor the memories of all of his clan and friends who had fought so hard and died to get him to where he was today, and so upon arrival at the said civilian station from there did some temporary engineering work, before a Nano Transen recruiter came on board. He went to the guy and although it took him some time managed to prove to him that he was once a employee of a merc group for his company, and that he had been quite the asset to them before. And using this as a plying point he managed to eventually get work on various outer rim Nano Transen stations working engineering, mining jobs and the occasional security detail.

What do you like about this character? They are a older character for one which is fun because it allows for the whole slightly jaded view of things roleplay, his also a character who has been through a lot of conflict and hard times, so has a lot of interesting views on any fighting he might see on station and its just a interesting background to speak from. Also his a character with a very strict code that they live by, but one they have broken before out of necessity but not lightly, so its a lot of internal fighting about whether something is worth it or not and so on, which has the possibility to lead to all sorts of interesting role play situations directly related to whats going on around him.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd give myself a good ol 8/10

Notes: Soo I realise its quite a few paragraphs back story and some of those are pretty long, so sorry if I wrote a bit to much, I was just fleshing it out and maybe went a bit overboard :D. A initial edit from not 7 in the morning not having slept the previous night, which significantly dampened my logical thinking and lead to me putting this together very poorly, I will now edit through back story to make it more acceptable. :P

The question I am most inclined to ask is how the fuck is he alive like holy shit

Stretching my suspension of belief regarding luck past its limit aside, the Syndicate shit is a no, crew aren't to have experience with them, they aren't meant to go 'Whoa I've seen people equipped like this before it's the Syndicate!", they're not to know things past the point that the Syndicate is a terrorist organization who does Bad Things, generally.

The question I am second-most inclined to ask is if you really need your character to be some sort of top-notch fighter who has fought all these fucking odds astronomically balanced against him and came out on top?

I mean really, it raises a lot of red flags when the backstory is way fucking long and about more than half of it is how he's somehow fighting all these battles and is not dead.

Experienced war veterans are fine but heroes who have fought so many unbalanced battles and not even lost a limb or shit? Please, no.

As to the syndicate part yes, that was dumb, it really was but at 7 in the morning after not sleeping my sleep deprived lazy brain was just looking for a easy excuse to get the character into the Tau Ceti system. I went for a much more reasonable in.

Too the second part, no hes not mean't to be a unrealistic balls to the wall super combatant, just someone who has been in allot of conflict, at no point does this back story mention him being part of any warfare or combat that is unusual for Unathi fighters, he's been stated to have a mostly leadership position until to the Contact war at least and yes his a more competent fighter than many but no super solider. But those two factors together very much give him a good chance of surviving through skirmish warfare which is effectively what is described here. At the contact war yes mostly because I forgot to write about him getting really fucked up in the war because he was a front line soldier in brutal warfare and yes he would suffer for it, but that is just tired me thinking I have wrote things that tired me has also probably left out because I was already writing to much. However most importantly his not a war hero, hero's are known characters and have a status that one wouldn't fit on a Nano Transen station as a everyday worker, also its just not a fun position to roleplay from, strutting around as some kind of invincible icon of war. But being a old battered victim of a warrior culture forced into totally different alien world, which is what was being gone for is a more interesting stand point to RP from.

Hello! I'm sorry about the delay, I've had precious little time for the forums this week.

Originally I did skim your application and I had concerns with the involvement of the Syndicate, but my focus was on the backstory being incredibly violent as is. These things tend to be used as an excuse to have extremely violent character with a short fuse, or otherwise to self-antag or even immediately start valid hunting antagonists. Your general knowledge is solid so I just want to clear up the character itself. Syndicate involvement in your character's life we can play by ear, but in general it's a good idea to try to keep it out of rounds you're not an antagonist in.

How do you feel the violence present in your character's life will affect his behavior on the station? You say he's past his prime; how would that translate to dealing with the stress of antagonist shenanigans?

Thats alright :) . As to past violence the idea was someone who has become tired of a violent life style and as such disproves of it in general, a mixture of I'm to old for this and I'm done with this life style means he would deal with most situations of violence with the leave and call security to deal with this mess attitude. If faced with a antagonist messing things up he'd try avoid it, unless his job called for him to repair it e.g a engineer. But he would only ever get into a fight with a antagonist if he was actively attacked first, and in a fight he'd be incredibly honor driven, and I won't escalate it further than you do sort of attitude, never would he try to kill, unless someone is trying to kill him, and always his focus would be on getting out of there because he just can't hold his own any more in extended combat his past that, there are security staff and the like to deal with that.

On the off chance of playing a antagonist, he would always try to achieve what his doing none violently a thinker over a fighter now. And should he feel he needs to get rid of someone, he would always try kidnap them and take them somewhere, that he can have a even and fair fight with them, after all as far as his concerned you deserve to gain nothing from death unless the person who dies was given a fair chance and the fight was honorable. :D

In fairness though if he ever was attacked by a antag, his most likely to die really quickly and not do much, because I am someone who does alot of roleplay in fighting, and as such normally get cheesed to death pretty quickly using one of the faster super efficient ways there are to kill people in ss13.
