[Declined] Muncorn's Unathi Whitelist App

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: The Muncorn

Character Names: Archer (AI, borg); Korlyarn'Lyuil-Falaan Juol; Aoife Syion

Species you are applying to play: Unathi

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Some point between Red and Black, not 100% sure yet.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: I have.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: I've always been quite interested in Unathi, but to this point never had too much want to play them. They had seemed rather plain and boring, consisting of stereotypes and nothing much more. However, when I moved to Aurora I looked into the lore here and learned a decent bit, that it was, in fact, multiple stereotypes put together and then changed to sound better than they were, and this was quite nice. Recently though I've done some extra research into it, and additionally came up with an idea I thought would be quite nice, so I thought this would be a good time for this.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Unathi are often equated to the tribal groups within Africa in it's past during colonial times, and to a lesser extent in the present day. This isn't too surprising, as they're quite likely based off of it, however, they hold some large differences. Unathi are largely honourific, and value family values and tribal honour above all else and is the main driving point between most modern conflicts within the species. They also have the interesting factor of the Guwandi and the Guwan, which were what initially peaked my interest and is still what I'm focusing on with at least this character, though I have one or two others which are more accustomed to my overtly boring style. However, this all ends in having to nearly always roleplay a vastly different style than to any other species, having to moreso consider your tribe and family than a human might have to when doing certain acts.

The two characters are below. First is Sskardar, the original applicant character and the, uh, debatably designed one. Second is a lot more basic and less likely to annoy Jackboot.

Character Name: Kinzyr Sskardar

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

---

Sskardar was born in 2433, only a few months after first contact. His father had worked as a small time trader and merchant in Skalamar, but realised the potential given by the first contact and in 2439, he joined a group of human traders to help export and import goods between Moghes and nearby frontier systems. When Kinzyr reached 12 years old, he began to occasionally join his father in trading excursions, working with him permanently when he reached 16. This went quite well for a good few years, becoming a proficient trader alongside his father and the clan name became decently well in that little bit of the frontier. However, it was soon after that he made a quite major mistake. He fell in love, with a human of all people.

A girl living on a small outpost on a far out sub-planet used as a refueling area for merchants, she and Kinzyr attempted to conceal their being together for around 3 months, but in some fashion the news leaked and his father found out, and daresay it was not a pleasant talk. A several day argument ensued as they returned to Moghes, to go through the ritualistic process to become a Guwandi for his actions. However at their final stop before the jump back to Uueoa-Esa he jumped ship and vowed to never return to Moghes again. Since then he has led a series of small jobs around the frontier area, from mining to small time security work, however he thought he'd go to work with the company he and his father had traded with before, NanoTrasen, and has made his way across space to try and begin work aboard the NSS Exodus.

Kinzyr is a male Unathi around 6'4, and generally has a downtrodden and somewhat depressive mindset. Tending to do his work without much care, he steers far away from other Unathi after a few bad experiences in the past. He retains his clans name as an attempt to besmirk his father's reputation and to protest against Unathi traditions, though lost the conscious effort to do so a few years ago and seemingly only does it out of a sense of duty.

Character Name: Ozkhazar Ssirk

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Ozkhazar Ssirk was born in Skalamar in 2426, working locally as a labour worker and part time security enforcer from the age of 15 onwards. During the early years of Oureaean development, he moved there with some of his friends to join the local police force to ensure order in the still new civilisation. Up to very recently he has worked with the force, but was recently offered new work with NanoTrasen as part of their security force, given his decently extensive experience and excellent work within the field.

At 33 years old, Ozkhazar is a decently well built, green-black Unathi standing at around 6'6. Well built, he speaks cleanly for a Unathi and keeps a calm air to him. Coming to work with NanoTrasen primarily as a Warden, he's soon going to be beginning some courses in management and similar areas he's not proficient in, to hopefully move on further than where he currently is.

What do you like about this character? He's, different. On the off chance Jackboot doesn't decide this character stupid and has me revert to my second idea, it'd create a valuable area of roleplay I don't think we've seen yet, a Unathi who goes against the traditions quite firmly despite all thats comes against him to make him stop.

What do you dislike about this character? It could flop. I always take a risk with gimmicky characters, and many times before have I started playing a character I enjoyed designing and then hating the act of rolpelaying them onstation. Hopefully this won't happen here, but there's a good few parts to the character I don't quite enjoy, so we'll see.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd rate myself as a good roleplayer, as I put far too much effort into every single character I create. I however do have a few bad habits, though nothing too massive I hope. So I'd say 8-9/10.

Notes: I have a secondary character made up that's a bit safer, if you would like me to use that instead. Please just ask and I'll provide.

Hello!

Normally I wait a few days before making a judgement to allow feedback, but I do have several red flags regarding the character.

Guwans as a concept were originally conceived as a way to ALLOW Unathi to go against the traditions and expectations of the species. Unless you are acting absolutely silly, being a Guwan lets you act and behave in ways that would otherwise get me to step in.

But that is the price you have to pay; if you want to play a Unathi that UTTERLY rejects or renounces Unathi society, then the character has to become a Guwan, which makes your character the dirt below the bottom rung of the social ladder in Unathi society.

You don't become a Guwan by being a bad person; it's being disowned by your family, who go to the courts and have you legally disowned.

Your character conceived as it is now - falling in love with a (presumably) human girl, refusing to go Guwandi, renouncing his clan, then seething against the Izweski Nation entirely - all add up to one heck of a Guwan.

Applying to be a Guwan is very risky, and the recent surge in their population has made me more wary of further bolstering the Guwan fad. Unfortunately this application would not go on a route where I would feel comfortable accepting it. Because it's barely been posted and you mentioned you had a second character, I will let this one sit as normal so that you have time to rewrite the backstory to a non-Guwan character.

As it does say in the backstory, he left before going through the legal process of becoming a Guwan. His family may have still had it legally gone through, but he hasn't seen them since that point and either way, would not take up the mantle. By design this is an awfully brash character, and I'm expecting not a single person to like them in character and quite possibly out of character as well, and that's in many ways intentional. However, I'll add the second character to the app in a little bit, so you can at least use that one as a judgement.

Your application is very presumptuous... You have openly said that your second Unathi you have changed to apply with is not the one you want to play. You should not be actively trying to play a Unathi that everyone will hate IC and OOC.

I have always said that applying with a Guwan is brave, and playing a Guwan is a little brave as well, because while they have an 'out' for bad behavior (by being a Guwan) you need to go the extra mile to accept the consequences. I can't see that you actually understand the consequences of being a Guwan. It is not a "get out of requirements and social obligations free" card. It is a small IC slap on the wrist for playing a Unathi in an improper way if I can reason that you can do it in good faith.

I can't see your good faith here, because I see your character as intentionally made to be abrasive and as anti-Unathi as possible.

If this application is accepted it would be on the condition that you do not play a Guwan character, that you follow the proper guidelines in playing a Unathi, in your second one.

With that said, your second character has some minor flags. He started his police career at 15? That seems incredibly young to start as a police cadet. Was he one of the first Unathi to win ticket to Ouerea? How is he reacting to the new, alien world? How does his clan survive on Ouerea and what did they do before going up to settle the new frontier? How does he see the xeno races and their impact on his species, or, at least, himself?
