sdtwbaj Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 Replicators, converting energy into matter and can create many things. This would be a mid-late research project, and would be a form of alternative to an autolathe. The research unlocks the circuit board. Initially it'd only start out with whatever can be created by autolathes, circuit imprinters, and protolathes. The way they'd get more 'blueprints' is by having items scanned into them, which they can then replicate. The replicator's 'fuel' is an energy cell inside of it, and can't be wired into the grid. An unhacked replicator would be unable to replicate weapons, chemicals, et cetera. Though, once hacked, these safeguards are removed and most things can be scanned and replicated. What this adds is a mid-end alternative to an autolathe, creating a bit less dependence on mining and also allowing burdens to be eased (chefs scanning ingredients or dishes, engineers replicating new materials, etc.) Of course, this would be a balancing act with how much energy cell charge each item takes, and what should be impossible to replicate.
Arrow768 Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 Afaik we do not have replicator (energy to matter conversion) technology in our lore.
sdtwbaj Posted August 27, 2017 Author Posted August 27, 2017 Afaik we do not have replicator (energy to matter conversion) technology in our lore. ...which is why it's a research thing. We have ways to make energy create a physical object in the form of force fields, energy shields, etc. The research would be how to use energy to make a different physical matter, probably through some form of blue space synthesis or [insert scifi plot device here]
