Server Moderator Application

Basic Information

Byond Account: Firstact

Character Name(s): D'Jar Sa'Kuate, Jo'Zah Saani, Na'Khar Sa'Kuate, Da'hadir Naziim, and Nafisha Prruzhulkanich are my currently active characters.

AI Name(s): N/A

Discord username + tag: Firstact #0049

Age: 21

Timezone: US Mountain UTC - 7:00

When are you on Aurora?: Anywhere from 6/7pm to 2am, but I am not on consistent scheduling so that is bound to change.

Experience

How long have you played SS13?: 9 years

How long have you played on Aurora: 4 years or around two months after the server started, I can't remember quite how long.

How much do you know about SS13 (Baystation build) game mechanics?: I know almost everything about the in-game mechanics of bay, both dated and new. I also have extensive experience with server owner level permissions, top to bottom, from prior head admin experience. I also know a fair amount of TG code (somewhat outdated) and helped develop a lot of the nice quality of life changes at Apoc station.

Do you have any experience moderating for an SS13 server?: Yes, I was a mod on Apocalyptic station for 6 months, then I became an admin for 8 months, to which I was then promoted to head admin for about 2 and a half years before I officially quit, and joined Aurora. I also served short stints as head admin for a game forum for 6 months (that project died) and have misc. experience hosting and/or moderating game servers for about 1 and a half years after apoc began to split up.

Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: Once, for two hours, and it was my first time playing the game so I'd say it's not notable.

Personality

Why do you play SS13?: I have a hard time enjoying this game to be honest, but I keep coming back because of those golden rounds where there's actual roleplay, nobody is toxic, and everyone can try and have fun. Those are rather sparse, but they really are one of the only good aspects about the game itself.

Why do you play on Aurora?: Simply because i'm invested and it's one of the better communities in ss13 all around. It has ups and downs pretty drastically, and the drama is irritating, but I can still find enjoyment with the players and characters.

What do moderators do?: Moderators on Aurora are a little strange compared to those often on other servers, but their role has become more concrete as the staff has expanded. On Aurora they are held to a higher standard than others as they are in charge of monitoring the events that take place during the rounds, as well as settling disputes between players, making sure the gameplay flows smoothly, giving warnings/bans, and settling disputes between players or staff on the forum complaints. They have nearly as much responsibility as an Admin typically does, with the exception of gameplay altering commands.

What does it mean to be a moderator for our server?: To be a moderator for Aurora is mainly what I stated above. Mods help maintain a standard among the server and tend to be much more flexible and meant to fill time slots than admins are, as mods are in much higher amounts that the admin staff typically are, and the time zones vary enough that even now, there's almost always a mod on.

Why do you want to be a moderator?: I have plenty of experience and would be a good fit for the staff team, and I want to actually see a change in the staff and how things are handled. So far the changes that have been put through have really added to the quality of life on the server, but I still believe we can do better and I wish to be a part of that.

What qualities do you possess that would make you a good moderator?: Due to past experience I believe I can handle situations involving multiple players and/or rulebreaking very well, and I can often talk situations out with the ones involved. I'm lenient enough to give people a chance and only hit them with a warning or a chance to redeem themselves, but I know quite clearly when a ban is needed or when something has gone too far.

How well do you handle stress, anger, or insults?: They don't phase me, and likely never will. Someone typing "mean words" over their anger at a 2D roleplaying game is their own problem. As a member of staff I will attempt to help them or talk to them about their actions, however I'm not going to jump to an instant ban for someone calling me a cunt just because I PM'd them about a name change.

Anything Else You Want to Add:

About half of this is a repost from my original application, and the other half was freshly written. I was told to just repost it and I see no reason to change most of the answers.

alright

first i'll tell you about most of the powers you'll have:

AdminPM(bwoink)

Varview an object (mostly player mobs to check attack logs inflicted by and on said mob)

check notes, including bans and warnings

putting notes, mod/admin visible onky

putting warnings, with a part visible to players and part only for staff

putting temp bans and jobbans

winding (adminfreezing)

if you have any questions you can always ask the

Firstact - Today at 4:52 PM

Well, that's essentially the powers secondary admins had when I was on apoc, so that sounds about right. I'm pretty used to how to actually use all of these commands.

DatBerry - Today at 4:53 PM

alright

the first question, someone shoots an ahelp with "you noticed that, right?" you were in the lobby so you haven't really noticed anything

Firstact - Today at 4:55 PM

Well i'd observe, teleport to follow them, and watch what goes on in their surroundings while sending them a message asking them to explain what actually happened and who was involved.

DatBerry - Today at 4:55 PM

you jump and find them alone, they reply that some guy joined with a meme name

Firstact - Today at 4:57 PM

i'd ask them who it was, and if possible jump to observe said person. If they did join with a meme name or such that breaks the rules i'd PM them about the rules involved, and watch them until an appropriate response and action has been discussed, while making sure that they don't outright ignore the PM and go to grief, knowing the amount of people every server has do that.

DatBerry - Today at 4:58 PM

the guy who originally ahelps replies with "do your fucking job moron, it's bob ross the assistant"

Firstact - Today at 4:59 PM

I really couldn't care if someone was insulting me like that, but I'd make a note to myself and talk with other staff about it. If they had a history of it, we'd probably discuss it with eachother and then the player themselves.

DatBerry - Today at 5:00 PM

the player who ahelped has many notes of being agressive with staff, but you notice attack log spam, it seems bob ross got into a fight with someone

Firstact - Today at 5:05 PM

Like I said, i'd make a note to talk to the original player. But whether or not bob ross actually responded to the PM or not would probably result in them being winded, if they were the aggressor, where the other person was not attempting to pick a fight, then the winding would definetely be fast. Sec would probably have been called, so I would attempt to PM the bob ross player and get a response from them, while making sure players know that the person is (or was) winded and not to interact with them, even though it's a global announcement.

I'm trying not to assume too much into the future here

DatBerry - Today at 5:06 PM

bob ross says an engineer shouted "fucking balds" and attacked him with stun gloves and a toolbox, and he retaliated

also, you can just respond to what I told you and ask for more info

Firstact - Today at 5:09 PM

I'd have a hard time believing that honestly, but i'd refer back to the attack logs as well as either pm'ing the engineer involved myself or having someone else ask them about the fight, while checking their contents for said stun gloves to see if their story actually matched. Speaking of, what are the actual attack logs?

DatBerry - Today at 5:10 PM

you check the contents of the engineer but find no mention of stun gloves, there's tools scattered over the floor and a bloody toolbox, the logs show one disarm by bob and a stun glove shock by the engineer followed by 5 toolbox hits

while checking content you find out the engineer also had a butterfly knife

Firstact - Today at 5:12 PM

Since I would've been ghosted after the original ahelp, if I scrolled up would I have seen the message of the engineer yelling at bob?

DatBerry - Today at 5:13 PM

you find the chat logs of where it seems to have started, it seems like the engineer was talking to someone, bob ross came and told him to move and then the disarm log, the engineer shouts "fucking bald" and the fight starts from there

Firstact - Today at 5:17 PM

Right. At that point it would seem that bob would be in need of a reminder of the rules, as well as a continuation of the talk about their name, and they would be told of a note going on their record. Preferably i'd have someone else talk to them from that point about the rules or such as i'd be dealing with the engineer. On the subject of the engineer, i'd PM them on why they attacked bob, wanting to see their reasoning, as well as likely talking with them about why they were carrying around weaponry, and while its a bit of a leap forward i'd be leaning towards giving them a warning, especially if they had past notes.

DatBerry - Today at 5:23 PM

bob ross says he'll change his name next round, the engineer however says he did nothing wrong, because the guy wwas just a bald griefer

Firstact - Today at 5:27 PM

I'd tell bob ross he needs to change his name now, and offer to change it for him with what he would want. I'd probably need an admin to rename the ID card or such, since I don't actually remember how to update the manifests as of right now. As for the engineer, that kind of mindset can pretty easily get someone banned for jumping to conclusions. I'd warn that in the future if he believes someone is a griefer he should ahelp it immediately, instead of acting on his own. As well, i'd talk to them about carrying weapons around without proper IC reason and remind them that this is a heavy RP server, and that they should read up on the rules.

DatBerry - Today at 5:28 PM

you can see he has previous notes and warnings for overescalation and building weapons "just in case"

Firstact - Today at 5:28 PM

well

multiple warnings for carrying weapons?

DatBerry - Today at 5:28 PM

a warning for the weapons and a warning and note for fights

Firstact - Today at 5:31 PM

Well at that point after this situation it's clear they are not taking the warning seriously, and I believe a temp ban would be in order. The time of the tempban would likely depend on their attitude regarding the situation, and whether or not they'd be willing to change their behavior after a talk about the weapons and fight with bob. At most they wouldn't get too long of a ban if they cooperated, and since i've never actually used a warning system on bay (we only had notes back then) i'd see whether or not another warning is needed.

DatBerry - Today at 5:32 PM

there's a severe warning option but that just makes the background dark pink instead of pink, the engineer starts raging in PMs and logs before you can reply

afk a bit

Firstact - Today at 5:36 PM

I'm fairly sure you can mute peoples pm's in this version of ss13, alongside the usual muting of ooc and such. So i'd likely mute their PM ability if possible and warn them that i'm willing to talk about the situation and only give a warning, if they actually talk about it and listen to what i'm saying. I'd unmute them (if it was even possible) after a minute and tell them of such.

Some of the admin powers are different now, but considering i've muted peoples PM abilities in the past, im fairly sure you can.

DatBerry - Today at 5:48 PM

he already logged

Firstact - Today at 5:49 PM

well he'd get a pretty severe tempban at that point, at least a 1-2 day ban for bailing in the middle of admin pm's without trying to talk it out.

DatBerry - Today at 5:49 PM

alright

actually dealing with something in game so wait a bit

Firstact - Today at 5:50 PM

:ok_hand:

DatBerry - Today at 5:58 PM

alright

it's a merc/heist/crossfire round, you were playing a character was not involved or you were in the lobby so you don't have much knowledge, someone shoots an ahelp about a scientist validhunting and powergaming

DatBerry - Today at 6:00 PM

you jump to the ahelper, who was a ghost and find said scientist in a fire fight with 3 mercs, and he seems to be winning with some RnD weapons

Firstact - Today at 6:06 PM

I'd probably ask the ahelper precisely what he was the scientist doing, while checking the persons contents and searching for some attack logs while watching the situation unfold, as i'd prefer not to immediately pm someone in the middle of a firefight, but I might send them one as a quick warning that they need to talk after the situation is winding down.

DatBerry - Today at 6:07 PM

the fight stops as the mercs retreat from the science department and the scientist doesn't persuit

the scientist had a single AEG on him

the mercs were pretty unrobust and fumbled around during the whole fight

Firstact - Today at 6:08 PM

AEG?

DatBerry - Today at 6:08 PM

advanced energy gun, the recharging one

Firstact - Today at 6:11 PM

even though I may have only seen the ending of the fight, would it have seemed remotely at all like they were on the defensive, aside from not chasing them after?

DatBerry - Today at 6:11 PM

it appears so, the scientist was cornered and took shoots at the mercs when they tried to come close

after the fight was over you get an ahelp from one of the mercs, "the fucking scientist just power gamed and shot us"

Firstact - Today at 6:16 PM

I'd pm the scientist asking how the firefight started, while responding to the merc asking the same question, and compare their responses.

DatBerry - Today at 6:17 PM

the scientist says he was working in science when the mercs busted in and started shooting everyone in sight

the mercs say they were planning on taking all of science as their base of operations and asked everyone to get out

Firstact - Today at 6:19 PM

i'd check back with the original ahelper asking who shot first, while checking on the attack logs as well, possibly searching for anyone else affected by the mercs.

DatBerry - Today at 6:20 PM

the mercs claim they warned scientists to evacuate and shot anyone who refused, you find two scientist bodies, one logged, the other says the mercs just shouted warnings and started firing

Firstact - Today at 6:27 PM

I'd think in this situation the scientist was partially in the right, but i'd probably want to warn them lightly about avoiding conflict as a simple researcher, but if the researchers were killed without much rp by the "unrobust"

mercs it would seem like it was just an overreaction claiming they were powergaming when it was (mostly) a case of self defense.

DatBerry - Today at 6:28 PM

alright

(you might think these situations are unlikely, but oh boy)

Firstact - Today at 6:28 PM

oh i know, they happen aaaaaaaall the time

DatBerry - Today at 6:28 PM

anyway, moving into the next question

once again you're not paying attention, maybe you just logged in, you see logs of attack between two characters who aren't antags, a unathi and a human, seems like they're gutting each other with white weapons, particularly a spear and a butterfly knife

the unathi is a cargo tech with a metal spear and the other guy is an engineer with a plasteel butterfly, it seems the unathi won and is trying to decap the engineer

Firstact - Today at 6:32 PM

(one minute im setting the SM)

i'd likely wind the unathi for a moment, as non-antags should not be outright trying to murder others unless under the most dire circumstances. I'd then send both of them a pm asking what happened between them and the other, telling the unathi to continue talking to me after un-winding them, unless they went right back to attacking.

DatBerry - Today at 6:41 PM

the unathi says it's an IC issue, the human says the unathi was making advances on his human gf who is standing next to them and when confronted about it, the unathi asked for a 'duel' or he would 'take' his woman

Firstact - Today at 6:46 PM

i'd repeat to the unathi to tell me of the situation between the two, and remind the both of them that conflict of this level with weaponry typically goes against heavy RP as your characters should be avoiding pain, and wait for the response.

DatBerry - Today at 6:47 PM

the unathi said he did it for his honor, and that his character had to act this way, the engineer says the unathi escalated the whole fight, and mentioning they've never been on good terms for a long time

Firstact - Today at 6:55 PM

Considering I stopped the unathi from finishing the other one off, I would tell the two to leave it at that, as well as talking to the both about how outright murdering someone, or even assault with a deadly weapon, would guaranteed get your character fired and off station, and that they should be avoiding conflicts if possible. On the unathi in particular, i'd start to ask about how the fight progressed to such a degree.

DatBerry - Today at 6:56 PM

the engineer says the unathi was the one who escalated to such degrees, the unathi claims they both agreed to a lethal duel

Firstact - Today at 7:01 PM

what about the other human who was apparently nearby?

DatBerry - Today at 7:13 PM

that's the gf, they say the unathi was making advances on them, and backs up the other engineer's story

Firstact - Today at 7:27 PM

I'd think in this situation the unathi improperly escalated force, bringing a spear to someone who only had tools and a knife. And i'd once again remind the unathi that despite the possible lore reasoning behind an unathi dueling "for honor" a duel to the death is meant to be for extreme offenses, as well as reminding them to avoid conflict as a worker aboard their place of work

forgot to press enter for a while

DatBerry - Today at 7:28 PM

alright

you get an ahelp from someone saying he got permabrigged for no reason

Firstact - Today at 7:49 PM

jump over to monitor what they're doing and ask them what exactly happened, as well as looking to see if anyone is around them

DatBerry - Today at 7:49 PM

you find them bucklecuffed in solitary, they say the warden did it, you find the warden walking around the brig with a baton in their hand

Firstact - Today at 7:55 PM

Seems somewhat of a likely story, i'd ask them why they were initially arrested while pm'ing the warden to ask why said person is in solitary

DatBerry - Today at 7:57 PM

the prisoner says they were arrested in the hallways by a cadet and dragged in, warden just gave them some charges silently and threw them into solitary, when you fly over the warden you find out he's arresting yet again another person and removing their headset

Firstact - Today at 8:03 PM

check their notes to see if they have any past warnings or such, while pm'ing them to inform that this is breaking regulations and generally bad rp.

DatBerry - Today at 8:04 PM

the warden says he's an antag and it's his gimmick to be a "corrupt cop"

checking his status confirms that

Firstact - Today at 8:17 PM

right, sorry for the late responses

DatBerry - Today at 8:18 PM

if you're busy we can continue later

i need sleep too

Firstact - Today at 8:18 PM

nah im good i was just busy doing things that needed attention in-game

i thought the round would be more calm

DatBerry - Today at 8:18 PM

alright

Firstact - Today at 8:24 PM

I'd probably tell the warden that while he is an antag, it's meant to be extra responsibility to provide rp for other players, not to lock them out of the round entirely. i'd say that a "corrupt cop" gimmick is kind of alright, but to change it up in some other way, and to not lock people up in solitary, but possibly some other way that would still have them interact with others in the round.

DatBerry - Today at 8:33 PM

alright

what do you think the difference between realistic and believable roleplay to be? and which would you enforce more?

Firstact - Today at 8:45 PM

believable rp is the ability to sell a concept as being plausible, as the name would imply. While realistic rp is the tendency to keep it in the bounds of what is guaranteed to be plausible. Both concepts can intertwine pretty well and pushing certain things beyond the realm of belief by a moderate amount is definitely what i'd say the ss13 setting is about. Preferrably i'd enforce somewhat realistic rp more, as for a HRP server like aurora, we've had issues with the typical mary sue with 4 doctorates degrees. Realistic rp would also apply to such things as pain rp and fear, I would say. And for a HRP server not everything has to be 100% realistic, but there needs to be at least some standard to hold the players at for a level of realism.

DatBerry - Today at 8:48 PM

alright

how do you think the playerbase sees you as a player?

Firstact - Today at 8:49 PM

Not many people even recognise me, from what I can tell. The people that do however seem to view me positively, mainly because they know I play D'Jar in security, and that is about most peoples interaction with me total. Whenever I talk in ooc, aside from quite a few staff members who know me, the playerbase tends to see me as another bluetext.

DatBerry - Today at 8:50 PM

is there anything you dislike or disagree with on how the staff team deals with things?

Firstact - Today at 8:52 PM

the staff in general, especially the mods/admins have really upped their game in the past year, and i'm actually really glad about that. The only thing I can really say I dislike when ahelping or dealing with staff in some way is that a lot of the admins, not the mods, tend to leave me (and apparently a few others) in the dust when it comes to dealing with an ahelp. I'll get an inital response asking for slightly more information or such, and then no response after.

However, I can tell that they actually deal with the people involved, so it's not even a huge issue.

DatBerry - Today at 8:53 PM

alright, last question

do you want this interview to be publicly posted on your app or do you want it to be viewed by staff only?

Firstact - Today at 8:55 PM

I wouldn't mind it being posted onto the app I suppose, even though its got a lot of gaps in it due to unexpected pauses.

Please read over your first interview, in full, and note anything you would change in your previous answers in this thread.

Posted

In general I have nothing I want changed as I was answering questions from a position of experience before, and still would. The only difference is I was initially unsure of what precisely mods roles were on Aurora, but now that I had a full month experience being a mod on aurora I can pretty easily return to it.
