Wendingo
BYOND key: spaceexplorer Character names: Kenzo Okada How long have you been playing on Aurora?: 1-2 years on and off. I don't play SS13 very much, but I'm giving it a shot once again, hopefully I can do some interesting stuff or at the very least, can have some fun writing the lore for my main character. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: Because I believe my character would be suited in a position as Head Of Security or as a Captain on rare occasions, with captain ship having them focused on the exercising of Imperial Doctrines of honour and justice. Why did you come to Aurora?: Because I'm hoping I can take this place seriously, I didn't play often and that was often due to a conflict of timezones. But I figure I can play here on the weekends when you guys are actually on. Otherwise on a weekday, there is only 14-20 players on for me. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: I am unable to find the Aurora Guides that specifically state what to do as a Captain or Head Of Security, but have read the guides of security, command and also the Baystation descriptions of both jobs. I'm also generally familiar with SS13 so I know the gist of all the jobs, especially in that as Command you are suppose to mainly communicate what you want to happen as opposed to doing it yourself. Tell someone to fix the engines or arrest the person breaking into your office, not do that yourself. You aren't infallible and can be arrested or demoted by the higher ranks or other heads of staff, though for arrests, they only happen with heads if Sector Command or the heads of staff approve it. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is many things, I think I probably won't really understand it even a decade from now, tis the nature of the beast I suppose. From what little perspective I have now, it's about many things but often it involves some element of storytelling. As a roleplayer you can exercise your freedoms, explore your own and others imaginations, as well as deal with your own problems. It's a form of therapy, it's a way of connecting with people, honing your craft and learning to use your brain in ways you may not of thought possible. For me it's something that helped me get through some rough patches in my life, though that was in playing Dungeons and Dragons as a GM/Player. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: I don't really think of their out of game purpose, for me a character is a character and they should do what makes sense for them. You can keep in mind to not create destructive or irrelevant characters out of game, but in the execution of them, I believe it's important to play them out as is. Sometimes this can go against your better intentions, maybe you don't want your character to do something, but sometimes we need to respect where the story goes even as players ourselves - we don't want to go there. At least that's my mantra is a gamemaster, I'll kill every single one of my players and burn down the city I've built for months if that's what is suppose to happen, because it's not a thing that I get to control absolutely in my mind. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: The responsibility of a gamemaster is in raising the bar of expectations for the other players, I don't truly believe that you can ever manage someone or force them to do anything. But I do believe that if you are an exceptional roleplayer and are in a position of power, that you can teach and encourage people to do the same. I suppose in the same way, a head of staff is like a gamemaster and are responsible for creating something for their department to interact with. If you were to say that their job is to yell at people and to make sure they don't screw up, I'd argue that such behaviour would a symptom of a problem caused by something else. Don't kick the dog for barking, find out why they are doing it and help them to stop. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Kenzo Okada Character age: 29. Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Born to a sharecropper farm on Velda with a number of siblings, Kenzo was raised by a distant father and mother whose concentration was often on the harvest as opposed to their children, and when they weren't tilling the fields or fighting with each other, they were watching their children constantly for any sort of behaviour that might lead the empire to look unfavourably on themselves. Kenzo though, the fool that he was, mistook that fear for patriotism and in being raised within a household with absolute loyalty to the emperor, aspired to serve in the imperial court. After many years of operating heavy machinery and working with the Droga cattle on their farm, Kenzo made off to the academy at the age of 16 with intentions to become an Infantry Officer, in his mind - he would command the elite soldiers of the imperial navy and combat the rebels in heroic battles on the ground. Though luckily for him, he avoided what would of been an early grave and was recommended to the Intelligence Corps of the navy, being given an additional two years training as well as the opportunity to spend some years intercepting communications from rebel forces on the planet. Tir was one of the many planets inhabited by resistance fighters, and though they were outnumbered, were vicious in open ground and often employed IED's in their battles against The Empire. Casualties were high on both sides and it took over forty thousand lost lives on the Empire's part before they begun to realize they would need to glass the entire planet in order to win the war. Following the rebellion of the outer colonies, Okada was shipped off to Alba after having proven himself invaluable in deciphering rebel communications and in planning counter attacks against their forces. Individually, he would be responsible for the death of one of their generals, whose location he had discovered after he put an explosive implant in the wife of the general. After some careful planning, all it would take was for her location to be leaked to the rebel forces - their victory in rescuing his wife would ultimately be their downfall. On Alba the officer lost his edge, the very fibres of his essence being worn away - not by battle, but the desperate cries of a people suffocating under the boot of his own soldiers. There was only so much he could take, but after becoming aware of the political killings of many of his former friends from the academy, he resigned from his position and made his way bouncing around the systems. Eventually though, he'd find Tau Ceti and a company willing to overlook his affiliation with The Empire. Perhaps now he would finally find peace. (Timeline) 2431 - Born on the planet of Velda(Aturan Imperial Territory) 2447 - Records show enlistment into the Imperial Officers Academy, though details of their training seem obscure. Graduated as Chief Petty Officer. 2450 - Assigned to the Royal Navy as an Intelligence Officer, repeatedly coupled with the 22nd Magne Armored Cavalry on Tir Tochair. Promoted to Ensign by end of tour. 2554 - Transfered from Magne to head as commander of the 112th Alba Imperial Guard Regiment, stationed on the planet of Alba. 2556 - Enlistment Ended after 9 years of service in the Aturan Imperial Navy. 2558 - Contracted by Nanotrasen to work security on NSS Victoria as a security officer. 2560 - Transfered to NSS Aurora provisionally with the possibility of working in command. Made notes of intention to work for Sector Command in Tau Ceti What do you like about this character?: I think they are interesting and I'm a fan of the game Tyranny, I'd always wanted to make a character based off the Disfavored Legion which is where I got my inspiration for this character. I've always been the kind of person to mix genres and eras, so this sort of works perfectly for me. What do you dislike about this character?: The only time they will be funny is when they are unintentionally funny. Sort of like an old man doing pushups in his underwear, you walk in and see him prone on the floor with his belly sticking out - he doesn't know it's hilarious but you as the observer do. I'm often use to playing characters who actively try to entertain others as opposed to do those who do it on accident. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Dedication to their job, a history as a military officer under the imperial court and their intentions to work in Sector Command. What this means is that their intention is to do their job effectively, while their culture and history may make them take certain actions that aren't entirely efficient, that is the character being played out. But nonetheless, at least in the eyes of higher command, they want to be seen as the ideal candidate for promotion. So they will always try to ensure that the shifts are highly productive and will likely try to take varied approaches to doing their job so as to difference themselves from the other staff. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I would assume that I'm a decent storyteller and that people enjoy interacting with the things that I create. What I know is that I usually try my absolute best when I do tell stories and that I look to create them for others as opposed to myself. I don't really enjoy myself unless I know I'm entertaining those around me, otherwise for me at least - what's the point? Extra notes: Link to comment
SRVODeath
The backstory of the character is very detailed, so my compliments to that. However, I couldn't help but notice a few things that make me a bit skeptical. The OOC Responsibility section leaves me thinking you are a bit confused on the purpose of heads of staff and their responsibility to other players during the round. Consider looking more into what heads of staff are expected to do and keep in mind OOCly in addition to their IC behavior. You're on the right track, but not all there yet, in my opinion. As I said, I enjoy the backstory, if a bit dramatic. However, I would also recommend looking into the wiki pages for the Command roles you intend to play(HoS in this case) for their requirements as the character you have listed does not meet some of them. I'll refrain from listing to encourage you to have a good read. I have not had the chance to RP with your characters, or character I suppose. Which could be a timezone thing, or a lack of activity. There is a good chance the former. Therefore I am neutral and skeptical for the above reasons. Link to comment

Found the page you were talking about, I thought the thread stated to read the Baystation guide - did not know Aurora had their own for HOS. Though regardless, further exploration of the server today and some perusing over your comment and the guide leads me to believe that I would not be truly free to roleplay and explore my mind as I thought I might. I dislike restrictiveness and even as a gamemaster myself try to ensure that I allow my players to go down whatever path they please. Forcing a character to have a masters degree and at least 10 years of experience to hold the role of a HOS falls under a school of thought that I avoid with a ten foot pole. So I do not believe I'll be pursuing this any further. Link to comment
