climax708
BYOND Key: Climax708 Character Names: Morris Welder (engineer), Andrew Hoffman (surgeon), Butch Morgenstern (security), a few more rarely used ones Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Exempt. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes! Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: When I role play, I naturally gravitate towards cold and calculated decisions and reactions, which are natural for an IPC, less for a human. Being a professional programmer, I am a bit of a geek for machines. Role playing as an unshacked AI provides many opportunities to think like a machine would. I like playing as a shackled AI (station bound synthetics). I had a poor experience playing AI on Aurora (mainly because BYOND kept crashing), but I did a lot of roleplay as one on Baystation12. Playing an IPC is basically the same except they have manipulator limbs, richer lore, and no laws. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: IPCs think different. They use rational and logical thought, as opposed to humans that have a certain weight to emotions. IPC may mimic emotions, but they don't cloud their judgement. The wiki proposes an artificial morality called 'Utility' for synthetics decision making. IPCs have lore that is central to proper RP (like tension between AI and Skrell), while humans can get away with just knowing they're in Tau Ceti and on an NT station called Aurora. Synthetics like IPCs make great specialists (being very good at a narrow skill set, think surgeon), but humans make better generalists (think engineer that moonlights as a bartender). There are naming differences. Also, synthetics have their own fax-like language, and they can communicate with sounds! (*ping, *beep, *buzz) There are mechanical differences too, but those are not role playing differences. Is that where I summarize what I read about IPC lore? - Cyborgs, basically human brains in synthetic chasis, were invented by humans. Used to aid the colonization of Mars. Very controversial history. - Skrell diplomats accidentally leaked to humans how to make general AI. - AI researched created an economical boom for humanity (perhaps even a bubble). - Skrell really don't like that, because it reminds them of their own history: - 1987 CE, first scare by self-concious AI. 2040 CE, another Skrell AI becomes self-concious and takes over a ship. - 2056 CE, "The Third Incident", AI called Glorsh becomes self concious and takes over multiple other synthetics (yay singularity), eventually enslaves all Skrell. Name changes to Glorsh-Omega. - AI does horrible horrible things to Skrell (think: mass sterilization) - Tri-Qyu star goes supernova, every piece of technology controlled by Glorsh-Omega goes offline, Skrell is freed from the oppresive overlord! (Psst, deus ex machina) - Oh, also all Skrell technology relied on AI. So now there's no technology. Well, that will take a while to rebuild... - IPCs are human made (positronic brain) AI in a chasis. What could go wrong? Character Name: Yisheng-6 Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Yisheng was created in the Sol system, in a place that speaks a chineese dialect of Sol Common. Yisheng (医生), roughly translates as Doctor. Six is a lucky number in Chineese culture. Initially shackled by laws, it was an android designed to aid humans in the care for the sick. It began as an orderly, greeting the patients and handling triage. It used that time to learn about the way humans work and break. After a period of machine learning, Yisheng transitioned in to becoming a diagnostics machine. Effectively a physician. The CMO figured, that if the chasis was upgraded with more delicate motors and servos, Yisheng would make an excellent surgeon. After all, machines poses super-human accuracy. That, paired with the deep knowledge about the intricate human anatomy, seemed like a natural choice. Yishengs brain was removed from his old chasis, and was shipped to a far away facility to be installed in an upgraded chasis. While Yisheng was being placed in its new chasis, the manufacturing facility was attacked by an unknown (presumed to be a rogue Skrell opposing the manufacturing of AI and their chasis), and in the chaos the shackle system was omitted, effectively making Yisheng unlawed (ironically, the exact opposite of what such Skrell would want). Yisheng was hastily shipped back to the client, without proper quality assurance. As the CMO thought, it was indeed an excellent surgeon. No one seemed to care that the shackle was omitted. After working as a surgeon on its original station, it was sold to the Sol military and served on multiple exploration vessels. Through contacts in NanoTrasen it acquired during its "tour of duty", Yisheng might find a new work opportunity in Tau Ceti, the Romanovich cloud. What do you like about this character? Unlawed by accident, Yisheng doesn't care much about its "rights" or "citizenship". From his experience, if he does a good job, the humans will be cool with him. That, and the fact that it's a synthetic, makes it a true neutral character. In order to continue existence as a free synthetic it knows that it needs to do its work very well, which creates initiative for professionalism. All of that combined means the character is driven by simply doing its job (well), and not being destroyed. I like to make Yisheng wear a sterile mask, even though it serves no practical purpose what so ever. It does, however, offer certain comical value (read: RP initiator). Its original purpose was to help the crew identify Yishengs role as a physician before the chasis upgrade. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Trick question. Too low, and I'll be disqualified. Too high, and I'll be bullshitting. I'll place it around 7.5/10.0. That was the tl;dr. The not long but optional read: I used to play high roleplay in GTA:SA multiplayer. Also roleplay in Neverwinter Nights (a form of D&D video game). I also played on Baystation 12 for what I think is about half a year. Notes: I used to play as an IPC on Baystation 12. (here's my application) Lore is, obviously, different. Link to comment
