Imagine xenos except with double HP, double damage, no damage weaknesses, resin cobwebs that act as walls that block everything but the spiders, and you don't have to really capture anyone. You just kill someone, drag their corpse to a corner, and then wait for a few minutes and boom, 4 new terror spiders. 2 of them can tank and destroy a gygax mech easily.

Sounds genuinely awful. Durand w/ melee armour and scattershot fare any better?

No. The round I was in had a Gygax piloted by the HoS and a Durand piloted by someone else. Both were destroyed. Station had a death rate of like 70% but we still scored very high because me and some engineers managed to make the DNA vault.
