Think I need to be added?
-
Well the lore master has spoken. I look forward to reading it. Think I will attempt to whitelist for one of the Aliens after reading the guide.
-
I suppose in the current situation the outlook of expectations and the reality of the server community differ greatly. Speaking for myself and what I've seen in-game; I see that the possibility of reiterating expectations to players in a more concrete fashion will allow us to avoid issues similar to those of recently. With this in mind I only suggest that our expectations of lore and its intention would be better shaped around the reality of the community's behaviour.
-
With the two solutions in mind I suppose we just trust the judgement of those in charge of such things. Personally, I see that the community has shown its full extent of the lore based racism and as it seems to create such ire conflict both in game and out I'd personally see a benefit from it being removed. That being said, I believe there is a strong writing in the lore which does create potential conflict in a fun manner for all parties, but as of late it seems that the lore is being used to create arbitrary limitations on players versus allowing them to take new direction in their role play.
-
Exactly and with that in mind it opens up avenues for people to RP both sides of the issue versus either inaction or overreaction. Again this idea of true discrimination is under ideal circumstances of behaviour from all parties.

If I make any mistakes or oversights I apologize and will correct myself as needed. Moving on. First and foremost I will not deny any ignorance that I have regarding the playable aliens and their lore. I have only briefly read through the lore and have never been whitelisted for any of the species. However, in the past I have noticed a very large amount of variance regarding the treatment of Aliens aboard the station. The differences in treatment seem to go further then a person to person opinion and seem to be based on the round and how people are feeling about players at the time. Although I will not bring up specific incidents; as I have no intention of sparking a disagreement between individuals. Most recently many arguments have arisen on the forum regarding the behaviour of the Tajeran characters and their actions. While largely un-involved in the discussions it seems that the larger issue at hand is the lacking of a concrete treatment of the Alien races. While many ideas and propositions have occurred I believe a fundamental idea needs to be given. The idea I wish to bring forward stems from the concept that I have no desire to ever see a alien player barred from being able to fully experience the game. However, I also have no desire to mitigate the lore of the game to that of nothing. With this in mind I purpose a simple but (at least I think) effective matter of altering the behaviour to coincide with the lore but without restricting the players from being able to role-play in an entertaining way. Without wanting to run on further I simply put it forward: Discrimination instead of Racism From what I've read of the lore and how I have seen players go about the game in the past I see two common treatments. A) The human player has little to no reaction to an alien player and simply goes about their business B) The human player goes out of their way to create conflict with the alien player; more often so in an inorganic way that generally makes the the person playing the alien feel limited in their role. Notice that in situation B that it is not the character who is feeling limited but the player. While I do not desire to say how people feel this seems to be the most truthful if we look at complaints and arguments in the forums. And in the case of situation B what commonly occurs is the person raising an issue to a high level is reprimanded and they themselves are now limited in their ability to role play. In either situation little in-depth roleplay occurs. The idea I want to push forward is that we try to avoid having such extremes on both sides and try to find a middle ground and have people play on either side of it. In a simple explanation: I see the treatment of Aliens aboard the station more associated with the treatment of African American's post the civil rights movement. Where the idea of equality has been pushed towards the common populace but it is evident that it has not been fully accepted. Where situations of racial profiling are evident and extra steps are taken to show that the cultural norm of the game is of a certain standard of inequality which allows people to RP both sides of it. I believe this was the original intention behind the lore as written but we have deviated from it over time. While natural deviation is always welcome the present issues and arguments regarding the treatment of Alien players pushes that some solid base needs to be reinstated. The main idea would ideally be that the behaviour and treatment of the crew would not cause Alien players to simply be locked from enjoying their RP and the game but to disable normal avenues of success and create new ones.

Hi everyone, just thought I'd put my two bits in. Within the respect that I do have little idea of the function of the geneticist and their IC responsibilities. From what I've seen of it, genetics is one of the out of the way areas, a player in there will not have much interaction with others unless they call people to them or they themselves leave their department. We have made procedures to prevent certain incidents to arise due to the abilities that genetics can provide for people. Remaining on topic, it seems that forcing a player to remain in their tiny office for security reasons, 8 minutes into the round is overstepping yourself. I was not present during the round itself so I do lack details but I have never seen or even heard of this being done. Such an incident is an abuse of power and greatly constricts the victim from being able to fully be involved in the round. Although the issue at hand may be seen as an IC issue, the consequence would be OOC as the victim essentially has been barred from enjoying the full experience of the round.

Reporting Personnel: Clement Beach Rank of Reporting Personnel: Head of Security Personnel Involved: Safi Isra and family: Biologist and Unknown, Clement Beach: Head of Security, Officer involved with apprehension unknown. Time of Incident: Location of Incident: Genetics Nature of Incident: []Workplace Hazard []Accident/Injury []Destruction of Property []Neglect of Duty [X]Harassment []Assault []Misconduct []Other _____ (Place an x in the box that applies. If other, replace line and specify.) Overview of the Incident: Revived from Cryo into the Shift, I Clement Beach walked in on Ms. Amber Jamerson being sentenced for twenty minutes due to her actions towards Safi and her family. Completely un-involved in the incident or the procedure my complaint points in the direction of how on many occasions I have seen or even personally placed Amber in the brig for the exact same reason involving the exact same people (Safi Isra). This constant harassing behavior has grossly diminished genetics productivity. On more then several occasions there has been a back up of people needing to be cloned because both women are having to be questioned of why one attacked the other. At this point in time I believe the issue needs to be resolved by available human resources as it has been evident that Security's processing does not deter Amber from creating more issues. Did you report it to a Head of Staff or IAA? If so, who?: No report was made to heads of staff or an IAA. I responded to the issue of my own initiative. Additional notes: Although the incident highlights several things that warrant further complaints I lack the information to adequately detail them. If desired those involved may report the incidents separately. Given the circumstance with the station at the time I found myself to busy to respond to the issue during the shift. However, I believe the issue still needs to be addressed.

VickChoatic's Head of Staff Application
Icuris replied to VickChaotic's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I am constantly impressed by Victoria Beach's medical prowess and how it has improved over time. However, I believe both the character and the player need to further develop stress management abilities before they'd want to consider fully jumping into a head position. On that note I believe if given the opportunity that they would prove to be an excellent exemplar of the skills required of a CMO. -
Icuris's Head of Security Whitelist application

Upon further deliberation and considering how long this thread has been without much reply. I will continue to play as the Warden until I feel that I have acquired both the skills and notoriety expected from a whitelisted player. The forum page may be locked at the in-charge persons discretion. -
Icuris's Head of Security Whitelist application
Icuris replied to Icuris's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
At the discretion of an associate of mine IRL I played as a Nursing Intern to help introduce them to the medical field. However, the character Clement Beach has prominently been involved in security and I have been steadily working the character from cadet, officer and finally warden. -
BYOND key:Icuris Character names:Clement Beach How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Over 10 months Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: To step into a higher role of responsibilities to further my character's development Why did you come to Aurora?: For the purpose of heavy RP and the professional staff advertised Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay; simply put is a form of acting. Where a person takes on the characteristics of their design. In the case of video game based RP I believe that it is essential for role-playing to always contribute to the entertainment and enjoyment of the game itself. Further, RP is essential for the immersion of the players and when done right can be presented well even in the un-immersive content of BYOND's SS13. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: Out of character, a head of staff is meant to show both the commitment and responsibility that is required to hold such a position. They represent the standard that they and the servers staff wish all staff members in their department to adhere to. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Similar to above I believe that a whitelisted head is meant to uphold the highest standard of behavior attributed to the responsibilities and prestige that they have garnered. To maintain this standard and belief of the reliability of a head I believe it to be fundamental that a head re-enforces their departments fundamental beliefs in both themselves and their staff and always strives to go above and beyond to achieve a stronger staff, station and server. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Clement Beach Character age: 25, will adjust to meet role standard Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Clement Beach grew up in the slums of the megatropplis of Earth. At a young age he quickly learned to fend for himself and how to keep himself and people he cared about safe. However due to the nature of poverty he quickly found himself involved in morally dubious actions within the area he lived. As time grew on his behavior grew more erratic as he lost himself into the violence of his life. However despite recorded acts of violence and association with higher leveled criminals; Clement Beach never faced prosecution as he was deemed a small time hood versus the true hardened criminals in his company. During a recorded incident of arson within Clement Beach's apartment block, his younger sister was killed. Upon further investigation it was later found out that the arson was a gang related incident with a rival group. The traumatic experience had Clement Beach go off world to attempt to escape the life he had made. Realizing the consequences others might face because of him Clement would make every attempt to avoid conflict and attempt to always find non-violent resolution to problems around him. This ideal followed him into his employment on the NSS Aurora where he signed on as an assistant and would steadily work his way up to one of the highly recognized and respected officers aboard the station. At an unrecorded point He met the women Victoria Tait and between her first year aboard to now the two have been in a healthy relationship which eventually lead to their marriage What do you like about this character?: I like that my character is honest and makes the attempt to be empathetic with others. He comes off as one of the most calm officers aboard the station and works diligently to subvert the stereotype of the gungho security team that Aurora has developed. Further then that I see that when the opportunity presents itself he will always take the extra step to avoid unnecessary conflict and handles things in what would be considered a realistic manner. What do you dislike about this character?: I dislike that my character is unable to show affection to his wife while in public or work. Even a hug causes some anxiousness as he attempts to remain professional. This stems from the fear that someone might oneday harm his spouse to cause him grief. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: I believe my character portrays the necessary qualifications in ethical, moral and ability based standards that he would prove to be an excellent Head of Security if given the opportunity. I apologize for such a brief statement but I wish to explain myself in an effective and simple manner. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I would rate my role-playing ability at a 7.5 out of 10. Where in 99% of all cases I strongly believe my presence to always be a positive addition to the game, I give myself a lower mark to leave room for error and honest mistakes. Extra notes: I appreciate the fact that I have taken what most people consider to be the gruff brooding type of backround and added the reverse spin on it making my character more human as a result.
