Fortport Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 Remap the bar so that the Barista has their coffee shop set up on the bottom of the room, replacing the booths. Rearrange tables to accommodate their workspace. Now a barista is not forced to operate as a bartender under any circumstance and doesn't have to overlap. Give them only what they need to brew and serve coffee, with a seating area. The bar is very spacious, and could stand to be changed for these purposes. This is a suggestion, so take it with a grain of salt. It's really to spark discussion and maybe change things if anyone sees this as a problem.
Trazz666 Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 I'm wholly against this idea, for a number of reasons. Firstly, and this is more of a complaint in general, I feel this whole coffee/coffee machine thing has been a bit forced ever since its implementation. Secondly, the inclusion of a 'barista' title as a replacement to the bartender title has always made me suspicious of its effect on the meta of SS13. The fact that it creates more competition for that coveted bartender slot is one thing, but the fact that 'barista' strictly implies serving coffee versus 'bartender' implying all drinks spells doom for the poor snowflake that dares to refuse dispensing alcohol. And lastly, the bar is great how it is now. Logically, the only place a barista area would fit would be if you got rid of the booths, which is terrible. So much RP has happened in those booths, they're nice. Plus, in real life when you go out to eat, do you ever willingly ask for a table over a booth? Of course not, are you mad?? Now, if the ever advancing infection of coffee fanaticism can't be stopped, I have an idea on how to make it bearable. Step 1 is to make barista a separate role. That clears up the stealing of the bartender slot. Step 2 would be to shove the coffee shop somewhere unused, such as the shop by the bridge, or maybe the emergency storage by medical (because lord knows medial loves coffee). Or, even better, put it in the vacant office on the surface. That way incoming visitors/employees can grab a cup before heading in.

Are you against this idea despite you and I having the same intentions? Of course, the barista needs a separate role if they get their own spot in the bar. Switch the booths to be somewhere else if they're so important. The suggestion is for the barista to have their own area, wherever it may be. The bar is just the first place I could think of because it has tables and chairs everywhere, and is the designated spot for food and drinks. The merchant's area next to the bridge is hardly ever used, in retrospect. Then there's the area beside the bar that's for smokers, which could be repurposed into a small room as well. So many places.
Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Honestly move the bar to the back abandoned stage area and have it be a dark smokey bar to compete against the peppy coffee shop

furrycactus Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Honestly, turning that unused shop between Medical and the Bridge into a coffee shop sounds like a really cool idea. I've never seen it used in a single round myself (though I might just be unlucky), and the layout looks like it could be used for a prime small coffee shop. Of course, that's if you split the barista/bartender roles. There doesn't seem to be much incentive to play a barista at the moment, given that most people will still expect alcohol from one, and a bartender is perfectly able to just use the coffee machine, so it makes the job difference pointless. Splitting the roles and adding a designated area certainly sounds like it would only enhance RP opportunities. I like the idea a lot.
