[Denied] Whitelist application to be a unathi

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Stevonono

Character Names: Oluf Petrosian (human)

                             Nomzalo Zakhete (Unathi)

Species you are applying to play: Unathi

What color do you plan on making your first alien character: hex code #26284d

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: i still cannot get over the fact they are 6-7ft tall on average. their pre-contact writing system is reminiscent of babylon, the religions are many and different, and the biology makes a lot of sense, though alcohols in general have the same effects, butanol being what lizards can drink and still get drunk easily off of makes sense, as butanol is a weaker alcohol. they heavily remind me of Malta: a religious country that has a failing environment on an already mildly hostile land, with very emotional people of close family ties and now weakening cultural norms, with a language that makes German look gentle.

Why do you wish to play this specific race: It seems an interesting an well thought out race that would be, at the least, an excellent exercise in roleplay.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: they are much more resilient to higher temperatures, are slower than people but can sprint quickly, can't drink, and they are currently experiencing a culture war due to the various conflicts of the galaxy. they share a good deal in common with people, but are more religious and honor bound, with a firm moral code and several deep-rooted traditions and mannerisms common to the species

Character Name: Nomzalo Zakhete

backstory: An Unathi born midway through a decade of great exodi, he never learned to keep one place as home, and from a young age took easily to learning new skills, even before getting exposed to off world cultures. He struggled to fit in at any one place, partly because he got used to places only after multiple years of staying in one spot. Even after the off world exodi into nanotrasen occupied space halted, and after the incident, he still enjoys exploring.

An accident occurred not too long into his first job at roughly 16 whilst working as a janitor, where he got his left arm stuck in a disposal bin, which ended up catching his arm in the sealer, and pulling his arm off from the pressure difference. About  7 years later he got caught halfway through the closing of the emergency shutters at the chemistry lab he was working an internship at because he forgot his PDA behind, losing both his legs after trying to pry open the door an crawl through. One day about a year later he just gave up and amputated the last arm after paying a doctor to do it for an extra 20 credits. He does plenty of jobs around the workplace, be it making borgs, fixing machinery, or helping out the chef and bartender serve food. He had finally found his place to settle.

He was never as truly religious as his parents, followers of th'akh, but after actually thinking through the events of his life, he definitely believed there was something protecting him. this led him to eventually following Aut'akh, as he always had an affinity with robotics, even more so now. Other than that he is generally cheerful, and greatly values the "found family" he's made on the station.  He helps out aboard the station, every shift helping at least one department. As well as being able to see the moral degeneracy of the crew, he fully embraces it.

What do you like about this character?:
He is quick to Learn new skills, enjoys making friends. The young lizard certainly grew up to be unique, very arguably coming the closest any unathi aut'akh has to becoming completely mechanical. Also I spent about 6 hours planning out this still backstory so I may be a bit biased. a lizard basically grafted to an exosuit is definitely one of the best Ideas I've ever had for a while. a reptile race with a subset religion that believes the flesh is weak and steel is the true form for intelligent life is very interesting concept to me given their more robust nature making the "weakness of flesh" less apparent due to basically being clad in keratinous armour. it's probably the most detail I've ever put into an SS13 Character.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?: I would say I am pretty good at roleplay. even in other med-RP stations I was able to convince crew of this backstory. I only really struggle with very high levels of detail but even then, If I revise I can memorise things fairly quick.

i'm redoing this application because i think i messed something up in the original one. i understand if you take our time but i really did pour a lot of time into this. im releasing this so its slightly more lore-compatible but tell me if i missed anything.  in the meantime i will just be playing as a barely human-android mess called Oluf Petrosian, who also got into a horrific accident with a cryostasis beaker, but that's another story for another day. See you all soon. i'm still trying to get the lore right because i detest breaking character/continuity unless absolutely essential, like breaking character somehow playing into the story. i will edit this as needed. if there are any details i missed please let me know

Alright, three days have passed since the update, so I'll give my verdict.

I will say that this has some improvement and remarks on the lore. The point of the whitelist though is to reflect on your knowledge of the lore overall (at least, the basics of the species), and I don't think I'm confident that this application reflects that for you. For starters, there are no mention of any of the locations unathi reside (like Moghes proper). It can be assumed they aren't from Dominia, but that still leaves either Biesel or Moghes for countries they could have grown up in. There is no mention of the Contact War, the singular most defining event for unathi in the last few centuries due to the toll on life it had. There is no mention of what culture they were a part of, whether traditionalist or Izweski.

Additionally, the backstory seems to not go with the lore either. There is mention of purposefully cutting off a limb and getting it replaced with a prosthetic, as well as being the closest any Aut'akh has ever been to being completely metal. The Aut'akh Communes page outlines how they are struggling communities that barely make ends meet, so an Aut'akh would most definitely not be purposefully getting their limbs removed on purpose by doctors and paying them to do it.

There are some issues with the tone as well that make me concerned for responsibly roleplaying the species, but I think the area of improvement for now is brushing up on your knowledge of the lore if you want to apply again. This application is denied. You can try again after two weeks from this ruling, and of course are free to ask questions on the lore discord for my deputies and I or other whitelistees.
