pictish20 Posted Saturday at 07:50 Posted Saturday at 07:50 BYOND Ckey: pictish20 Discord username: pictish20 Character names: Juqtul Glipt-Xulshi (Captain) (RIP), Chamberlain (HoS), Ta'Akaix’Manz'Ikax'Koz C'thur (Consular), Za'Akaix'Akkz Zo'ra (Security Officer), Xoku Shixul (Investigator) Species you are applying to play: Unathi ------------------------------ General Whitelist Requirements What colour do you plan on making your first alien character?: Mudki Stone (98, 84, 65) Have you read the lore pages for the species you wish to be whitelisted for?: Of course. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this species?: Since joining the server, I have wanted to engage with as many parts of the lore as I could, and have worked towards several different species whitelists in pursuit of that goal. My roommate just adopted a Leopard Gecko, which I took as a sign that it's time to start on Unathi. Since researching, I have found that I am deeply interested in the spirituality of the Unathi. I have yet to really engage with religion/spirituality with any of my characters, and Unathite religion is one that sounds very fun to play. In addition, there are several Unathi characters that I always love interacting with, who have inspired me more than a little to join in with the stern, direct Unathite culture that I enjoy playing alongside. What makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a human?: The Unathi are a deeply traditional species, whose society is largely feudal and clan-based. Even when interacting with other species, the Unathite traditions tend to survive, and their speech patterns in human languages often reflect the structures of their own language, such as the terse syntax of Sinta'Azaziba or the avoidance of contractions of Sinta'Unathi. They also commonly use their own phrases, even in other languages. They are a spiritual culture, with all of their major religions tying back to worship and respect given to the spirits of the ancestors, who are affected by the world and conduct of modern Sinta, and affect the world and modern Sinta in turn. They follow a tripartite gender system, where one's gender is determined primarily by their employment and offers a clear set of behavioral guidelines such as specific greetings or codes of honor respective to each gender. ------------------------------ Character Application Character Name: Sozhur Kurask Write a backstory for your character. This may include their origin, education, personality and how they arrived to the SCCV Horizon. Clan Kurask has been found in Mudki nearly since the city's founding. They are a peasant clan, loyally serving the local nobility for a great many years. Their labor, while not bringing them wealth per se, enabled them to live securely from the worst ravages of poverty. When the Contact War came, many Kurasks could be found on the walls of Mudki, repelling each of the Traditionalist assaults in turn. Mudki may have been shielded from the nuclear exchange, but the Contact War and its aftermath still spelt the beginning of the downfall of Clan Kurask. Passing time and Coalition armies could not break Mudki, but it could not weather Lord Izaku's madness, coupled with growing ecological devastation, ongoing Gawgaryn attacks, and the deteriorating economic state of the city. The Kurasks stubbornly clung to their dying city, and its collapsing state brought them with it. Sozhur was hatched into an already weakening Clan Kurask in the final years of the Contact War and raised as an apprentice of the Miners’ Guild. Between the growing environmental devastation and the increasingly exhausted resources in the remaining area, the opportunities for valuable mining in the surroundings of Mudki were limited, but Sozhur nonetheless committed themself to diligent and profitable work in the name of the Clan and the Lords of Stone, in accordance with the traditional Zazalai version of Th'akh. This was, of course, unsustainable, and under the guidance of the Clan Matriarch, Sozhur sought a new contract with Hephaestus’s mining division, as many guildsman of the Miners’ Guild have done. This contract was signed shortly before Lord Izaku’s rebellion, and they were scheduled to leave Moghes for Hephaestus employment shortly after when Mudki fell to the Karszekan’s armies. Despite the disruption to this plan caused by the revolt and the uncertain situation of the city after its capture, a contract is a contract, and Sozhur left their clansmen to handle the aftermath, as they went to the Korgak Mining Outpost. Now, a couple of years on, they have been transferred to the Horizon, scheduled to arrive on its next return from the Lemurian Sea. How has the recent events of the Orion Spur impacted your character? Events such as the Phoron Scarcity, the Solarian Collapse or even the Invasions of Biesel for interstellar-wide affairs, while region-specific events such as the Peacekeeper Mandate, The Titan Rises or even Cold Dawn may impact your character. Sozhur's current employment and situation is a direct result of Hephaestus’ takeover of the Unathite economy, which is itself the result of the phoron scarcity. This is true, however, of many, if not most, Unathi in the Spur today. More personally, however, Sozhur has been deeply changed by Lord Izaku's revolt and the siege of Mudki. In a material sense, their home was a battlefield, and members of Clan Kurask died among both Izaku's and the Karszekan's armies. Sozhur's clan and home have been irrevocably changed, and they witnessed the fighting from the streets of their home. All of this serves only to enhance their commitment to their work for Hephaestus — extra credits are needed now more than ever. In another sense, it has shaken their belief system. As a member of the lower class, it is natural to mythologize the nobility. Th'akh belief in ancestor spirits and the importance of bloodlines can only serve to intensify that. To see a noble fall to madness and treason, especially a hero like Lord Izaku, one begins to doubt the idealized image of the nobility. When the Karszekan punishes a noble, and in a display of force and technological power as an orbital bombardment that breaks one of the greatest fortress cities of the entire Spur, one begins to doubt the traditional power systems that one grew up with, even if one grew up in the usually level-headed culture of the Zazalai Mountains. Sozhur wouldn't voice these doubts, but they live in a world where all the good ever done to them is by their Clan and Hephaestus, and this is on their mind. How does your character view the megacorporation they work for? I mentioned it above, but Sozhur has a very high opinion of Hephaestus. Many Unathi look well upon Hephaestus as the only honest corporation, but they are also something of a personal benefactor for Sozhur, as they have offered both an opportunity for personal development and to leave the ruins of Mudki, but they also pay much better than the Miners’ Guild and provide a far more comfortable life than Sozhur has ever had before. 2
CatsinHD Posted Saturday at 15:21 Posted Saturday at 15:21 Pictish plays good characters all around, although I've mostly interacted with Chamberlain and the late Juqtul. I think they'd make a good unathi player. If only I could poach them for a Taj WL . Either way, good roleplayer, dutiful to the lore. Easy +1
Rookie Eyes Posted Saturday at 16:40 Posted Saturday at 16:40 (edited) I really enjoyed what I saw of both Chamberlain and Juqtul. I also approve of the backstory for Sozhur Kurask as it explores the theme of the modern era challenging the traditionally held beliefs of Moghes both within and without. +1 Edited Saturday at 16:40 by Rookie Eyes
evandorf Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Hello, and thanks for applying! Your app is thorough and well written, showing a lot of thought in how your character interacts with both established lore and newer events. Still, I wanted to ask a few questions to pull on some threads. You mention that Sozhur has a high opinion of the Hephaestus corporation, and that it has been a handful of years since Sozhur departed Moghes. Does the high opinion also extend to the humans and aliens that Sozhur works with? What about bosses or corporate execs? Has their perspective grown over the years or would you say they have maintained a fairly conservative outlook? You also mentioned that most or all of Sozhur's clan is Tha'akh and how the practice of ancestor worship affects their views on nobles, societal structure, ect. Especially now that the Izaku rebellion likely took the lives of many clan members, is there someone in particular that Sozhur looks to for guidance? Does he have any opinions on the recently announce Nikziran and the shift into elective monarchy?
