Syndiekate Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Again, another simple mining-related suggestion. Just add one or two alt titles for shaft miners, my suggestion for them is "Drill Technician" though If anyone else cares to suggest any, that'd be grand. This is basically for the miner's method of mining to be identified by a glance, similar to how the station engineer's titles are sub-set specific (I.E. electrical engineer, engine technician, etc.)
Lady_of_Ravens Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Just a thought, but "Mining Technician" is a good alternate title for miners, too.
Killerhurtz Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Meh - I see no discernible advantage to this. I don't know how easy it would be to implement, but for me, 95% of miner interaction with these titles will fall under one of these: -None because you're always down at the asteroid and so no one will really bother talking to you -"Mining Technician/Drill Technician/Shaft Technician? That sounds fancy. What do you do?" "I mine things and maintain the equipment to mine things." "So... you're a shaft miner?" "No, I'm X" "But it sounds just like a shaft miner, what ELSE do you do?" And so on. It's not like it's a technical field - for engineering, each field would require years' worth of study to completely master - electrical engineering is nothing like knowing the engine inside out, which is nothing like knowing how to maintain a space station which is nothing like knowing to build and maintain a station's atmospheric loop WHICH is nothing like a space station engineer who repairs major structural damage to a space station or expands one with the space given). Same goes for science - each field is it's own studies, and unless they're a RD most scientists would specialize in one branch. With a shaft miner, you need to know three things: how to wield a pickaxe (which isn't particularly hard), how to handle mining equipment (which I could see being done in a 24-week training seminar like modern heavy equipment, and knowing how to handle a mining exosuit which could be done in another seminar - it's not rocket science, there's no big underlying study. You don't need to understand thoroughly how your gear works - that's the job of engineers, roboticists and scientists. You just need to know how to use it.
Frances Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Rename the janitors to "sanitation engineers".
spacevoidagent Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Rename the janitors to "sanitation engineers". Whenever I play Janitor I ask the HoP to rename my job title to this. They usually say no.
Killerhurtz Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 In all seriousness though, janitors should have the option to be called custodians as well.
SierraKomodo Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 In all seriousness though, janitors should have the option to be called custodians as well. I vaguely recall a suggestion awhile back to call them 'Custodial Engineers', although that was a part of a suggestion to make janitors part of the engineering department
Killerhurtz Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 That makes a surprising amount of sense. Janitors maintain the station's cleanliness and basic functions like lightbulbs. Engineering maintains the larger parts of the station like atmos, power and structure. It's a sound argument.
Xelnagahunter Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Guys. This thread isn't about titles for everything, just for miners. Lets keep this on topic.
Guest Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Wasn't there a server with Mining Foreman role? I suggest you add that, instead, as a seperate role, then rename the 'Shaft Miner' as a "Mining Technician". Otherwise, I'm against role names that don't provide any changes in function. In my opinion, you should provide the list of role names with their corresponding function. Example: Counselor and Chaplain. One provides guidence to the crew, the other is go-to religious guy on the station. The function is sadly still the same, the way most people play them.

It's to avoid role congestion.
Guest Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 QM already doubles as a Foreman. It's to avoid role congestion. In theory. Yet, being tied to Cargo doesn't give him much space to manage mining. A mining foreman would go well to optimize mining operations. Besides, 1/10 actually goes around to manage mining, from my count... which is probably inflated.
Guest Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Could always nail the cargo techs to the desk to approve stuff while you for instance, as the QM, go do foreman stuff. It's not so much "I don't want this because it's redundant", because I think it could be reasonably interesting enough, but more like "I'm pretty sure the dev team has more to deal with at the moment".
