Ckey/BYOND Username: Nanotoxin

Position Being Applied For: Dionae Lore Overseer.

Past Experiences/Knowledge: I haven't done lore work before.

Examples of Past Work: http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=4176 I wrote a new Dionae lore.

Preferred Mode of Communication : Skype and steam work best. Forum PM's can too.

Additional Comments: I understand that people might not like the new one, but I'd be open to revising the new one, keeping with the same ideology.

I like the idea of Dionae as gentle giants. It reinforces the idea of them being pacifists, because an angry Diona is not something that would be fun to encounter.

For the planet lore, could we go full fantasy on this? I'm thinking of Dark Souls, and 350ft Dionae conjure up images of archtrees and demonic foliages.

Thank you for applying! I'm glad you're interested.

Have you had any other experience writing creatively? College writing workshops, general roleplaying writing stuff, DnD, or anything else?

And, if your application for dionae lore is not accepted, would you be willing to work with them in the way that overhauls Bay lore while retaining the current style of the race? IE, space hippie trees, rather than angry warmongers, etc.

I haven't done anything substantial. I'm not in college as of yet, but I was taking University level english courses, which is the AP(?) classes in America? The smarty pants ones. This is also the first and only (besides a single round of call of cthulhu) roleplaying game that I've played, so no credentials there either.

I said in my app, I think, that even if it wasn't accepted, I'd love to improve, upkeep, clean up, the exisiting Diona lore.

i would like to highlight nanotoxin's achievement as i have personally failed a creative writing course and did not even know you could fail a creative writing course

I'm willing to accept you, but I want to make sure that we're on the same footing in regards to the trees.

Are you willing to retain the core of the dionae lore, as in big space hippies as we have them from Bay? I've used my time off to think about it more, and I haven't been able to reconcile this new proposed direction, nor has anyone else on the team really shown any investment in it either. Your work for them is clearly creative and you have investment in it - but it's not where we really want dionae to be going. Are you alright with this?

I'm sorry for the delay, I'm currently working on studying for the finals I have. After this upcoming Wednesday I will be much more free.

Regardless - a last minute issue came up in regards to your application.

Namely:

"I feel as if it is right to say that when my phone auto-corrects "Xander" to "Cancer", people still know who I'm talking about "

Some people (Not just Xander) have brought up the fact that you can be rather abrasive, or hostile towards other members of the community. Lore developers - especially one that oversees a species - have to communicate with people and be able to have a dialogue, even if you disagree with these people or think they're an estranged mongoose.

Can you work in a team with a level head, and not have any issues with other members of the community?

(As a side note, I'm not going to take any more concerns about this application through Skype chats. If you have an issue with the applicant, please bring them to this thread so they can be discussed in an open way.)

I, too, feel you are abrasive when being nice doesn't further your plans. There's also this post and this post about people who, in your moderation application, reported much of the same.

And a quick look at your notes also reveal a long-standing tendency to do things just for the sake of it, from being an asshole to just being argumentative beyond reason, with the latest event being just a little over a month ago.

In light of this, what traits make you a positive person to have on the Lore Team? Do you have an explanation as to these behaviors?

What others pointed out and whatever bias I might have against you aside, I honestly don't think you would make a good loredev. You might have had a good idea with the Dionea, but being a loredev actually requires you to motivate yourself and from what I know, you're are someone who isn't motivated to caring easily. Even if you get the race itself (which is unlikely), I honestly don't think you'll persist working on it for long.

I don't know Nanotoxin very well, and I've seen him be abrasive at times in OOC. He also seems quite disillusioned and disheartened with Aurora (from what I've seen), so his return to make a mod and loredev app comes as quite a surprise.

However, I don't think he's a bad guy, or a problem person at heart. I'd like to convince the lore team to give him a chance, and see how well he meshes with us before definitely casting his application away.

Since a lot of the "cooperative, communicative" side of lore devs happens through chat rather than forums or PMs, I'd suggest you give him a chance to prove himself, well, in the chat.

I'm not exactly sure who I get hostile towards in OOC. The only person I can really think of is Voltage, and even then I thought everyone gave him crap, unless they're meaning Thundy, but we're cool. I don't go out of my way to insult or argue in OOC with any one person. Regardless of what my reputation is, I am able to would be able to work with members. As I said in my moderator application, I'm much more than capable of seperating my personal feelings in a professional setting.

In the case with Xander, I just really was not a fan of him. I got my feelings our with the posts on the other server, I really no longer care one way or another about him. But, as I said before. Able to leave that shit at the door when the time comes.

And Delta's problem with me? Purely based on hear-say. The little things I've heard about what a terrible monster I was to Thundy, were for the most part, completely untrue. Let me refer you to

concept. There are things I can/will own up to, things I've apologized for, and things I never plan to repeat. I also tried to discuss that with Delta over skype, but he wanted nothing to do with it.

I really have no idea where your idea that I am not motivated to care about things comes from. You were in the skype group when I started this back in June/July. You had seen me go all day talking about it, getting into fights with Erik and Cres regarding realism and what not. I've worked on it since then, completely motivated. I'm not entirely sure where this comes from. I'm a lot of things, but unmotivated has never been one of them. I can provide examples of that for sure.

I too would also appreciate people post their problems with me here rather than over skype, that way I can address them and talk about them.

See, you're doing it again. I can see you trying - but did you have to be so snarky when referring to the telephone game? I already got it before you posted that link. That whole sentence was completely snide.

It's the things like this that make me reluctant.

That is a very blatant misrepresentation of what actually happened. The fact that you don't recognize that clip in particular as comedic satire instead of the evident psychological truth you think it is, is really disappointing. It honestly looks to me that you're attempting to appeal to humor just so you can cover your own ass in I.) breaking into someone's facebook account II.) posting awful malicious lies as that person just so you can feel better about yourself.

And I don't think you did this because you were a horrible person. It was largely in part because you had severe judgement and decision-making problems considering that you were using at the time. I've been told that you've come off of it, but considering that you recently went over to another server to slander Xander just because you thought he was a major shitlord, makes me think that you haven't changed a bit.

You have a tendency to stoop really, really low for what seems to be absolutely no reason at all. That is why I called you a rogue variable, you are completely unpredictable and there is no telling if one day you're here to be a good influence, or if the next you're out for everyone's blood.

You guys are proooooobably reading too deep into this.

Do we have to analyse a messy break-up from nearly a year ago to evaluate a bloke's freaking loredev app?

Delta (and everyone else using this) STOP using this. It is not yours to use, it is mine. If I choose to bring it up on Nanos app, I will do so. You don't even talk to me, why are you quoting me. Stop it.

Nano is young, but he is more then capable of filling this position and would be better at itthen many people who have come before him. I would not imagine he would make a good moderator, but a lore dev? Definitely.

I chose that particular video because A) I've seen it before, so I knew where to find it B) there aren't really any serious games of telephone, but I was hoping people would still get the concept.

I'm honestly puzzled at this backlash. (From what I understand) As a loredev, I'd be writing stories, answering questions, and maintaining the wiki page. If I was running for headmin, yes I can understand why this is relevant, but do you people seriously not want me just writing stories this badly? On top of that, is there no other lore team member that doesn't have a negative past, or are none of them snarky at times?

I'm creative, motivated and passionate about writing about these fictional people, and work well with others.

Alright, I understand, and I won't go into it since Thundy doesn't want me talking about it anymore.

My only questions would be the following: Do you have a set plan for working as a lore developer? What do you find yourself working on in, say, the next two weeks? When do you think you'd be able to get those writing tasks done?

Also. Tell me, in any sort of writing style, of a roleplay experience (good or bad) that you remember most fondly. First thing you can think of, tell me that story. Even if it's just a bar discussion that you really enjoyed having, that'd be nice to hear.

Well that depends. I applied for to be the head of the Dionaea, but Borna says it's unlikely. If I do however get appointed to the position I applied for, then I plan on going over the Diona lore, picking out any mistakes (Spelling, gramatical) if there are any. Then I'd work with jackboot with adding more meat to the lore, adding details, events, history, things of the sort. I'd include information of the Dionaea's biology, some OOC tips/mechanics. I am however will be moving in like a week, so I won't be the most productive for three or four days, but then I'll pick back up.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, like write out the whole situation for you? I don't remember exact things people said, but one of my favourite moments of playing on Aurora was when my character had come out as being a bad guy to one of neb's characters, who did the same. At first she got upset, then said she did that line of work as well, then they talked about missions (Past nuke rounds and the such) and just talked the entire shift.

I remember you wanting to write up the head of security guide like a really long time back, but everyone forgot about it, I guess.

You should do that, you were a good HoS.

Anyway, about storytime, a short story would do, though you don't have to. Whatever you can remember, doesn't have to be 100% true/on-point.

Posted

Nano, I found it snarky specifically because instead of just going "it happened because of people passing on things" or just, SIMPLY adding "It's like a bad telephone game", you implied that I wouldn't know about such a basic concept and used a humoristic video of it. I get where you're coming from - but even if you didn't plan on seeming passive-aggressive, it would probably be a good idea to consider if things are appropriate to use and in what manner. Because at this point I honestly believe it's not conscious, it's in your writing style (not that it makes it better)

Posted

It might just be me, but I don't see a very big difference between making a direct verbal mention of the topic we're talking about or providing a link to it (for comedic effect or otherwise). It's a stylistic approach I've seen many people use on these forums and it didn't always denote snark or anything of the like.

Posted

People make a horrible mistake when they quote me on anything, but what I meant by that is that the rework of the diona lore by turning them into bloodthirsty monsters probably won't sit bwell with most diona players, so some loredevs have been very reluctant to support your app and give you full reign over the species. That said, the effort and seeming passion you've put into writing for the subject might make you a good loredev for Diona.
