[ACCEPTED] Theevildude's IPC whitelist application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: theevildude

Character Names: Richard Higgs (human), Clement Borris (human)

Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): N/A

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Of course.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: My reasons for wanting to play as an IPC are simple. I've done it on other servers and it was very enjoyable. The servers I used to play on are dead now and the nostalgia was killing me, so I decided I'd apply here. The IPC lore on this server is much richer than what I'm used to and I think it'll lead to a much more enjoyable roleplay experience. I'm really looking forward to reimagining and playing as one of my favorite characters in 2D spessmans again.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

IPCs don't have a metabolism. They don't get high. They don't eat. They don't need oxygen.

All they need is power and a suitable atmospheric pressure and temperature in order to keep cool.

The thought process of an IPC is much different from that of a human's. IPCs make decisions based on sets of logic and programmed responses. Humans make decisions based on brain chemistry, peer pressure, blind faith and a tiny bit of logic.

IPCs don't feel pain. That doesn't mean they're suicidal. Chassis are expensive despite being easy to repair.

Character Name: Lennox

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Lennox was manufactured on New Gibson and was part of a batch of IPCs commissioned by the Dewalt Appliances company. Dewalt Appliances owns several factories on New Gibson as well as a large biodome for its employees. The batch of IPCs were built and programmed to serve as firefighters for the biodome. Dewalt Appliances adopted one of Lennox's "brothers" as the company mascot to feature in several advertisements for the company. The firefigher IPCs were programmed to be amicable towards people and to have a desire to help anyone in need. They proved to be extremely capable firefighters and some would be regarded as heroes.

Lennox was one of these heroes. He saved many lives, but was taken out of service after taking severe damage to his positronic brain at the site of a house fire in the Dewalt Biodome. He was shot by a skrell employee who he was trying to lead to safety. The panicked skrell assumed that Lennox was the one who set the fire and shot Lennox twice in the chest. One of the rounds caused irreparable damage to the portion of his positronic brain responsible for speech and lightly damaged another section responsible for movement. This led to Lennox being unable to speak properly as well as making it harder for him to keep his balance. Lennox was sold off to Nanotrasen for cheap to work as a janitor as he was unfit to continue being a firefighter.

Lennox is in a state of disrepair. He has not had proper maintenance in several years and has problems with the servos in his legs and his monitor. It would be more expensive for Nanotrasen to repair Lennox than to hire another janitor. Lennox hasn't changed much despite having the IPC equivalent of brain damage. He's still happy to be around people and happy to help however he can. In most cases this means cleaning floors. He communicates through rough gestures, near illegible handwriting, occasional Morse code and more commonly a collection of beeps, chirps, buzzes, and chimes. He was programmed to be able to administer first-aid and is familiar with EVA equipment as a result of his career as a firefighter. He walks at a slow pace to avoid loosing his balance but is very persistent when he has a task. He has been known to don EVA gear and clean windows from outside the station during quieter shifts.

What do you like about this character?

I used to love playing as Lennox before I came to Aurora. It was probably the most fun I've ever had as a janitor. In many ways Lennox was similar to a puppy. He was happy just to be around people and to be doing anything. I also enjoyed the slower pace of playing as a janitor compared to the usual medical or engineering that I used to to back then.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd have to say probably somewhere around a 7 or an 8? I tend to get really into the role I'm playing.

Notes: I nearly died of nostalgia typing this out.

So, Evildude, first off, your name called my attention, no idea why, but what sold me off to look at your app was the "Doc Mitchell" joke (it really did, no joke), after i finished reading that i took a pleasent surprise, seeing the good writing and extense (but not overly extensive) backstory, so, here's my full review.

Character Names: Richard Higgs (human), Clement Borris (human)

So far, i only know Higgs a little bit, a mouthy engineer that seems to wine about everything, unless Borris is/was a security officer (i think i'm recalling wrongly) i don't know them

Everything allright here, but, you meant 2D spessbots, didn't you?

I don't know if this point is truth for all of the IPCs out there, i've seen some "with feelings", allthrough, i've only heard that they emulate said feelings, inquiring about this specific area might be good, my doubts stand for the moment

This part of the backstory is great, not just for the writing, but for myself, seeing as how this specific model of IPCs are the mascot of a big company back in New Gibson, one of my characters is from New Gibson himself, he would recognize the model of the IPC right away? if this is a yes, i would love it

The rest, not really a lot to say, it's really good to my all-forgiving eye.

Answer to my questions, and you have a +1 on the bag

no. The game is called 2D spessmen. Don't ever let anybody else tell you otherwise. You wouldn't call it 2D spesscats in a tajaran app would you?

what's that?

you would?

well fuck you.

I suppose I was being a bit too general when I described how they think. I never said that IPCs didn't have feelings or that that did. I was just saying that the choice a human would make in one situation might not always be the same choice an IPC would make. I'd imagine most IPCs tend to think more logically than most humans do but I'm not going to say there aren't any exceptions. I personally think that even emulated feelings should still be considered feelings. Afterall- humans are just really complicated machines made of flesh and bone. It doesn't actually matter if somebody else truly feels emotions if they're well programmed enough to convince you that they might.

THE PRAISE MAKES ME FEEL HAPPY INSIDE. Also I was actually hoping somebody would recognize Lennox as being the same model. That'd be pretty great to ARRRPEEE. The character description would provide some more clues to people that don't read this application though. One of the things I was thinking of is that that on the back of Lennox's monitor there'd be the words 'PROPERTY OF DEWALT APPLIANCES' but with 'DEWALT APPLIANCES' crossed out with a permanent marker and 'NT' written above it.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human

This part consists mostly of stating the mechanical differences rather then actual roleplay differences, picking the low-hanging fruit essentially.

The backstory seems quite quite solid, although the EVA qualifications+mental unstability sounds like a way to fuck with security, which has been a problem with IPC's who can't be stunned, how much would you say you are going to attempt things with EVA and things security might not like generally?

I've interacted with Theevildude somewhat, they seem to have a decent grasp of things and don't break any lore to my observations.

due to the quirky nature of IPCs I mostly tried to keep this section really general. For the sake of my application I'm going to answer this question as if it were asking me how I plan to play my character differently rather than the whole species.

My walk speed will be capped probably somewhere around 80 or 75 percent what it is normally. This is to reflect that lennox has trouble walking. There will be 'me' verbs of him stumbling occasionally. The fact that Lennox cannot speak is not going to stop me from using comms. There will be 'me' verbs of beeping, chimes, chirps, pings, and all that sort of thing. If Lennox falls down in the same hallway for the fifth time in four minutes expect to hear very loud and very angry robot noises over the radio. I also plan to be persistent and develop tunnel vision. Machines don't give up as easily as humans do usually. If Lennox is doing something and you don't like it all you need to do is ask him politely to stop a few times. If that doesn't work try asking impolitely and you'll probably get though to him. You'll also probably hear some sad robot noises.

It's pretty hard to resist arrest when you're slow and clumsy. Also- Lennox isn't mentally unstable. He's perfectly sane, just unable to form words and very clumsy. The whole EVA thing isn't so much a "fuck you security" it's more of an "the inside is clean. Time to clean the outside." It's more for the hilarity of a cargo tech watching that IPC janitor that can't speak and is somewhat clumsy float up to his shuttle bay window, take out a rag and spray bottle and start cleaning while beeping happily and waving to whoever is watching. It's more to show that Lennox is extremely devoted to his job rather than to fuck with security.

So I had misread.

Very well, I am satisfied with your answers and see no immediate reason why this application should be denied, my support is given.

When I was an administrator on Exogenesis way back when, Evildude used to play Lennox almost every day. Having already seen how he used to play IPCs, I would personally have no issue to withhold support if it means he'd play Lennox again. I really hope he gets it because not only do I believe he deserves it, but also seeing Lennox again would be the most joyous thing I've seen on-station.

You have very positive feedback and your backstory was an enjoyable read. You have a firm grasp of IPC's and I have no issue in granting this application.

There is a severe glitch with the whitelist process, so I will mark this as processing until the coders can sort that out. Message me again if you do not get your whitelist within 4 - 7 days.
