driecg36 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 (edited) Right now, fires are pretty much only caused because of phoron leaks, either accidental or not. The problem is, not only are phoron fires a rather rare occurrence (unless someone is working toxins), but also an incredibly boring one. Almost every instance of phoron fires is immediately contained by auto-shutters, and then can be dealt with remotely 99% of the time by waiting for the fire to burn, then cycling the air through the air alarm, and calling an engineer to fix whatever damage it caused. Phoron fires aren't very fun for anyone involved; the firefighter sits at a console and presses buttons; the victims are either left to burn until the fire goes out, or get out before the fire starts, since phoron spreads instantly across a room. But what about old school, solid fuel fires? I don't know how hard it would be to code, but I do think it would add a lot to not just the atmos experience, but he general station experience as well. They would just be self contained fire tiles that burn anything flammable (I get that most of the station is metal, but still) and spreads until it runs out of oxygen or gets put out. They could start a few different ways, whether it be by a cigarette that wasn't fully put out, a flamethrower, or a spark from a wire. I think this would generate a lot of fun RP and gameplay mechanics overall. People getting yelled at for fire safety, people panicking over a fire, and ACTUAL firefighting! Since the fire doesn't spread instantly over any open area like phoron fires, it would actually be a good idea to be a brave firefighter running into danger with his fire suit and fire extinguisher! Sure, it wouldn't make a massive difference for most rounds, but I really enjoy mini random "crises" that aren't antag related, and I think all the firefighting gear is criminally underused. It'd just be a neat little addition that could create some fun RP and give people something to deal with on slower rounds, while adding to the chaos on faster rounds. Edited June 13, 2017 by Guest
Fire and Glory Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 (edited) Solid fuel fires actually exist. Apply a wrench to a welder tank and the fuel will spill on the floor, which you can then ignite for a fire that won't spread. (although if there's too much then it'll still heat the room to 400C) All that's needed for your dreams is something that'd actually cause those fires. Welder fuel coming out of the scrubber backsurge when? Edited June 12, 2017 by Guest
Nikov Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Welding fuel out of scrubber backpressure is a terrifying yet interesting idea. Also, at a certain temperature, floor tiles would burn. In addition, wood and carpet would burn at much lower temperatures and the white plastic tiles of medbay are also likely rather flammable. Are you sure you want to go down this road?
NoahKirchner Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 YES! YES PLEASE! Oh gosh being a firefighter while atmos tech is the best thing ever!
driecg36 Posted June 13, 2017 Author Posted June 13, 2017 Thing is, aside from welder fuel (which is liquid not solid you scrubs), pretty much nothing is flammable, so all it does is raise the temperature. TBH I'd much rather welder tanks just have a tiny explosion when shot, but spread a shit ton of fire like a napalm grenade.
