[Accepted] Tbear's IPC App

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Tbear13

Character Names: Tyler White, Mark Sulyard, (Formerly) Vakaris Dvorak, Jake Houser

Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): N/A

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yep.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: I'll be honest, I only recently became interested in playing IPCs. I was considering making an application to play Unathi or Skrell, when I had an idea for an IPC character, which I'll get to in a bit. Once I looked at IPC lore, I found that it was much more interesting than I previously thought. Mechanically, they look fun as well. No raisin induced heart failure, being tougher save for a single, major weakness, that kinda stuff.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The biggest thing is, well, they're robots, anything they "feel" is fake, an attempt at emulating real emotion. They rely on logic, rather than feeling to make decisions, even basic ones. They have no set culture, no set way of talking, it all depends on what they were made for. They're considered tools by many people and are often treated as expendable.

Character Name: Devi

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Devi is a baseline IPC created by Hephaestus Industries, made to be a simple, relatively cheap security IPC. After being made and checked for issues, it was sold to an amateur roboticist, who lived in Mendell City, as a general servant. However, this roboticist wasn't quite as innocent, or inexperienced, as it would seem. He worked for a small, extremist wing of the Equal Rights Union, calling itself the Synthetic Independency Caucus, which believes that equal rights for synthetics need to be won by force.

Over the next month, this roboticist reprogrammed the IPC, mostly editing utilon values, making Devi enjoy activities like socializing, if only to find potential supporters for the SIC, acquiring materials and funds for the movement, and making him afraid of getting caught or leaking information. So, the plan for him was to work on a Nanotrasen station, find supporters where he could, and get funds or materials when possible. After it was programmed, the roboticist made sure everything was working, gave Devi the information of the contact he's supposed to deliver the materials, credits, and information about potential supporters to, and sold him off to Nanotrasen.

What do you like about this character? He has more depth than most IPCs I've seen. He has something to hide from everyone, but at the same time tries to socialize and find new supporters.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd give myself a 7.5 out of 10, I can roleplay pretty well, but my characters, in my opinion, lack the kind of quirks that make a character really interesting. That's something I've been trying to fix, it's definitely getting better.

The character has the potential to a bit wrong, but after a brief talk over discord I'm confident that Tbear can pull it off without going off the chain about it. He gets a +1 from me.

Glad to hear I could clear up your concerns. Thanks for putting your trust in me!

I am fearful for this character idea. It can very quickly devolve into "REEEE SYNTHETIC POWER" that most people follow anyway. I do not think it brings anything new to the table. I have not seen you play in game, so I can not judge your roleplaying aspects. I don't know if you will be up to snuff with the other IPC players. Maybe if you changed the story a bit it could have a +1, but right now it is a -1 from me. Maybe if I see you RP it will turn into a +1.

Edit: after some clarification, it's neutral for me.

I'm willing to give this a +1, I've seen Tbear13 play Tyler White and Mark Sulyard, and can say with certainty they're a capable roleplayer, and I do really think they can make this character work subtly and without being a disruption to any given round as a whole. I trust that they'd be able to play a character with this sort of "gimmick" and have it not feel one-shot or forced, but instead have it create unique interactions with the rest of the crew.

I do not recommend playing an IPC with ulterior motives as your very first IPC. A swell character idea (if done correctly), but unfortunately one I cannot support for a first-time IPC player.

Personal opinions down, next up is business. The backstory, while I don't expect any backstory to be perfect, has some flaws I cannot overlook. They worked with, and were reprogrammed, by a roboticist who they didn't even know the name of? For the entire month they were there? If you don't want to include arbitrary names that only affect the backstory, that's fine, but writing it off like that is unappealing. My advice would be to either completely remove any mention of the roboticist's persona and just keep their actions and affiliations ("The name's not important."). And what kind of reprogramming are we looking at here? Also, as always, discretion is advised when playing canon criminals.

Additionally, the name 'Augur' is already in use by another active player's IPC.

In order for your whitelist to be accepted, you should take one of two actions:

1. Rewrite the backstory a bit. Only include the roboticist as a plot element. Perhaps change the IPCs name. Expand on important elements.

OR

2. Use a different character for the backstory, flesh it out as needed.

I'll be marking this as needing attention until then.

Alrighty, I'll try to work out the issues you mentioned. It may be a few days before I can edit anything though, I won't be at my computer much until Sunday.

Hello,

Your character still seems to me to be programmed to deliver dead-drops to a contact on the Aurora? Will the IPC be breaking regulations on code green or acting against NanoTrasen, or is he just programmed to try to convince people that IPC's are equal?

Hello,

Nope, he'll be smuggling things off the station.

Will the IPC be breaking regulations on code green or acting against NanoTrasen,

Yes, he'll break regulations as a non-antag, specifically stealing things he believes will be useful to the SIC. I'll keep this relatively minor, just swiping some nanopaste or metal occasionally, for example.

or is he just programmed to try to convince people that IPC's are equal?

That.. isn't quite true, he'll focus on finding already pro-synthetic people, and trying to get them to work for the SIC.

I checked with an admin and as long as you are not stealing things like guns or the supermatter core then you should be fine. Application accepted!
