  1. Nightmare, I think you are getting too hung up in trying to be defensive. It is not your actions which I am trying to criticize here it is the SERVER'S actions. I want us to move past the specifics of Nasir's actions and focus on what is important.
  2. There is a huge difference, I mean no disrespect but playing as Hakra I have done much worse things in front of you. But as this new player I was given 30+ minutes of brig time and then had my backpack taken from me. I was unable to gain a second one. This was doing behavior that me as a regular player on this server thought was regarded as normal. I don't want to get caught up in the specifics, what you did here Nightmare was something almost every other regular would do if they were in the same position. You are not to blame, it is the product of social stigmas that are being reinforced by our server's community. I don't mean to make this seem as a personal attack. I just want to try and show that there are two sides to Aurora, the one that all us regulars know and love and the one that new players experience.
  3. I do not want to make it about this specific incident, I feel like I should summarize my points. While playing as Hakra Drat over countless shifts the number of times I have been demoted have been zero. While playing as this new character not only was I demoted but I was brig'd for 20+ minutes and had my backpack taken from me. There is a clear difference here. I hate that this post is being thought of as a complaint against any individuals. I just want to make this server a more friendly place for people to come onto if they are new.
  4. Now before I begin let me preface this with a bit of an introduction to those of you who don't know me. My name is Hartburry, I am an Aurora regular of around 7 months now. The characters you might recognize from me include Hakra Drat, an Atmos Tech and Eddie Clark a Head of Personnel/Quartermaster. I love Aurora, I play on it everyday and I love it. I want everyone to understand that this is not a complaint, it was not posted in the complaints board and if it is moved there I will delete it. I want the people who are mentioned in this post, specifically Nightmare and Nibbles to know that I love playing with them everyday as Hakra and that this could have happened to anyone. I pick on you two in this because I feel like I have an almost unmatched idea of how your character's interact with others. Now with that over you are probably asking yourself, "Why is Hartburry telling us all this? I thought this was a post about a server, not about some random dudes credentials." Well the reasoning for that is because I recently experimented with making a brand new Byond account and logging into the server as a new player. What did this character look like you might ask? Well he was bald as a bat. I made a bald player to try and test out the waters and see what it would be like if I saw this server and randomly wanted to try it out. I played a total of one and a half rounds and let me tell you this. We need to /change/ our attitude. My rules for this experiment were as followed. 1. I would fill out my character's sheet to the entirety that was possible besides his appearance. My character would have to have full records, skillset and flavor text. 2. My actions would only be something Hakra Drat would do. I would not edit my play-style at all. My character was going to be a Hakra without body fur. My playing of Hakra has been praised and is probably my most well known character. People like the character, I can name many who have personally said that they enjoy the character. 3. I would not use emotes. This was a little test, I planned on having proper grammar and spelling but I wasn't going to emote. I was doing this under the assumption that a new character would not always know how/when to emote. The first round I joined was at the end of dead-hour, if I remember correctly it was around 1 PM EST. Not many people were on and I basically just went around the station, trying to make friends. I actually got a bit of decent RP in, people were a little bit ruder than normal but for the 30 minutes or so I thought it wasn't the worst experience. However it is in the second round that things get a bit interesting. I join around 10 minutes into the round, my role is originally Engineer but I planned to immediately switch to Atmospherics to see what it is like going through the bureaucratic process as a bald. I head by the HoP's office and ask for a transfer form, the HoP checks my records and gives me the form, asking me to get it signed by Chief Engineer Nasir Ha'Kim. I go down to Engineering and ask Nasir for a signature, he tells me to come to my office and checks my records, also asking why I want to shift. I tell him I would be of more use to the team in Atmos and he finds that to be reasonable and signs/fills out the paperwork for me. I actually liked how this played out. It gave me some RP and allowed me to get to understand the way paperwork is used on the Aurora. Now here is where things get a bit tricky though. To preface, the other Atmos Tech on-board is Oliver Stefan, now I know the character of Oliver Stefan incredibly well. I have played at least 20 rounds with him as my co-worker in Atmos so I know how he normally acts. There are a couple other Engineers on this round, including Milton Schrader, a character, along with Stefan, which I personally love and have praised multiple times. There is also some chatter on the radio currently about some people using rolling chairs and extinguishers. Remember that, it comes in handy later on. The first thing I did as an Atmos Tech was something I do as Hakra Drat /every/ /single/ /round/. I head to the bar and ask for a bottle of Liqour, Hakra usually asks for Drambuie but for this character I asked for a bottle of Whisky. The Bartender, who is new, doesn't know you can pull actual bottles out of the vending machine so I ask with my character (who has worked part-time as a bartender) if he could have a look and see if there were any. The bartender lets me behind the bar and hands me his ID. I take the ID and remove a bottle of Whisky, then returning the ID and going on my way. Now mind you, I do this regularily with Hakra without any problems. However Nasir sees me showing the bottle off in front of Medbay and says that I need to keep drinking to the bar, I tell him not to worry and that I will not get drunk at the office. Nasir then decides to give me one strike. I go back to Atmos and proceed to do a few things, all of them heavily watched. I actually do some good work and prove that I am somewhat knowledgeable to Stefan at Atmospherics. However the rolling chairs and fire-extinguishers are brought up again over the radio, I then decide that is something a new player to the game would want to try out. I go out into a hallway and try it out. At that point Milton Schrader sees this and grabs me, calling Nasir. Nasir comes by and reprimands me saying he won't have his department embarrassed. I respond by saying that I was going to put the chair back and he tells me that I am wasting fire extinguishers, I then respond that Atmos itself has over 6 fire extinguishers just to themselves and that I was planning on refilling it. Nasir doesn't take that as an excuse and while he is polite and doesn't call me names he says I have another strike. I accept this and proceed to go about my duty however I KNOW that if I had done this stunt as Hakra it would just have been laughed off because if the majority of these people tried to reprimand Hakra about something as small as this he would have the IC knowledge to turn it around and call them a hypocrite because /everyone/ in the engineering department has goofed off before with no consequences besides the /occasional/ demotion which are few and /far/ in between. In fact I can say that as playing as Hakra Drat I have /never/ been demoted and what comes next in this story baffles me and if Hakra Drat had been treated like this you sure as hell know that the players involved would not hear the end of it. So as the shift begins to quiet down for me I notice that most of Engineering is off with a minor issue, I forget what it was. I decide to test something out. I place an empty fire extinguisher and a rolling chair in the hallway next to Engineering, I DO NOT USE IT AT ALL. I then head to the library to bide my time, sure enough a few minutes later I hear Oliver Stefan over the radio saying that "Whoever used the fire extingusher and rolling chair stop, you know who you are." I then head back to Engineering and Nasir stops me. After coaxing my name out of Stefan Nasir says that I am very close to a demotion. I tell him that it isn't fair and that I hadn't done anything, Nasir then replies with "Why would Stefan lie to me?" Nasir proceeds to walk away, I chase after him and tell him to stop, I say "I am here to work, not kiss your furry ass." This was outside Atmospherics and Stefan hears this, he comes up to me and whispers "If you continue to badmouth Nasir I will hurt you." Nasir then says that I will be demoted and he calls security to escort me to the HoP's office. I tell Nasir that he isn't being fair and that he has only been going after me, I even tell him what Stefan just said to me. Nasir says he will talk to Stefan, which he doesn't besides a short Stefan stop after Stefan threatens violence over the Engineering radio for the second time. Now let me say something right here. In all my shifts as Hakra Drat I had never been demoted. It took me ONE shift as a new character to be demoted. Also, not a few shifts ago Hakra was sat down by Nasir and talked to because Hakra raised his voice to a new Tajaran Atmos tech, yet Nasir was allowing Stefan to threaten severe violence against someone all because the player was not one Nasir/Nightmare cared about. Back to the incident, after some back and forth with Security and Nasir I am cuffed and am taken in the direction of the Head of Personnel's office. I was nonviolent the entire time, the only time I ever came close to violence was when I walked away from the officer's cuffing attempts. However when I arrive at the HoP's office the Officer (named Victor Kaipov)/Nasir change their mind and I am taken to the Brig. While on the way to the brig we witness an assault with a toolbox. This person is also picked up and brought to the brig. While in the brig I have all my items, including backpack and PDA taken into a locker by Nasir and he informs me that I will be demoted to Assistant. I am then given an EIGHTEEN MINUTE sentence for charges that I was denied when asked. The officer ignored me when I asked for my charges. Total time spent in the brig, including processing was 37 minutes and 16 seconds. At around 4 minutes left in the sentence the Warden comes to my cell and says he is releasing me early because he doesn't know my charges. He says that Nasir has my ID/PDA and I have to walk out of the brig to the laundry room naked, because all of my items had been taken. Eventually I find my PDA/ID and attempt to get a backpack however I had access denied on all lockers in the locker room. At this point I was essentially out of the game, no one would talk to me, I had no work to do, and everyone else who I had sustained RP with were not interested in RPing with me. I eventually begged the HoP to give me another job which ended up with me being given Cargo access however I did not have a proper title switch so I was almost arrested numerous times for trespassing. I mean no disrespect to the players I mention in this wall of text, I want you all to understand that I love this server and that I wouldn't trade it for any other server out there. However we need to understand that we have a problem. What happened here could happen to any of you. Just try it out. This is definitive proof of an elitist environment on the station and is something we definitely need to change. One note, to Nightmare and Nibbles. I know I pick on you two in this piece but I mean absolutely no disrespect when I write this piece. I think most of the regulars in this server fall into this trap and I by no means want to get either of you in trouble. Understand that I was merely testing this in a controlled environment which were you two and your reactions to the same play-style but with a different name. Finally I want people to understand this last point in all my playtime on this server I have never been demoted as Hakra Drat, it took me one try playing as a character without hair. We need to change this, I don't know how but I want people to start seriously thinking about this as a legitimate problem facing this server.
  5. Hakra and Bryce are passed out drunk in Maintenance again.
  6. +1 Another cat in Engineering? Yes.
  7. Anyone want to give me some feedback on Hakra Drat? It'd be real swell.
  8. Would you put in Hakra Drat?
  9. BYOND Key:Hartburry Character Names:Eddie Clark, Kitty Durant, Hakra Drat, Norman Hutchberry, sometimes Jace Kifer How long have you been playing on Aurora: Since June Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Diona exempt):Yellow Have you read our lore section's page on this species?:Yeah Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: Having gotten a Tajara white-list I got my first taste of playing an alien race, it was more difficult that I thought it would be. Having all new rules there were many times where I had to rethink how I play the game. With the Skrell white-list it will help me evolve my playstyle and allow me to furthur progress as a roleplayer. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The Skrell are the old guard of space travel. They have been exploring space while humanity was still in it's metaphorical diapers. Your average Skrell oftentimes has more opportunities to succeed than your average human or Tajara because the race had already truly established itself in space. It's is also important that you remember the language barrier that the Skrell experience, despite what I think many players think Skrell have emotions, they just are unable of conveying their emotions through the speech they encounter on a space station. Therefore the actions you take have an even larger role in conveying what your character wants/desires more than a human. Why does this species in particular hold your interest? They just seem cool, their understanding of life is much larger than any other alien species. Also the language barrier really makes me happy. Character Name:Dere Sular Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Well educated and well raised Dere had a lot of things going for him. He was born on Jargon IV and received high education in medicine. It was there that Dere developed a love for biology and how organisms work. He became a skilled surgeon and also learned a bit about genetics and xenobiology. With his knowledge and his financial backing Dere headed off to the inner colonies where he wanted to learn more about the species that he found most fascinating... Humans. However while traveling the inner colonies Dere was scammed and proceeded to lose most of his money, broke on the street Dere proceeded to earn money as a freelance surgeon. Working for those who could not afford the proper surgery Dere operated on a multitude of people with varying success, however he developed quite a name for himself, word spread of the Skrell surgeon who worked for cheap with cheap tools for cheap people. After a couple years of doing this Dere was visited by Nanotrasen officials who gave him two choices, be turned over to the police for his illegal work or be shipped out to Nanotrasen's state of the art space station the NSS Aurora where he would work as a surgeon in the station's medical sector. Dere chose the latter. What do you like about this character? I think I like the idea of playing this character, for one he will be played as extremely cocky and I think I might make him a bit of a specist because of his experience with humans in the slums. The cockiness will be fun to play because of the fact that humans can't recognize a Skrell's tone of voice, this also ties in with him being a specist. How would you rate your role-playing ability? 0/10 I suck, jokes aside I don't like to rate myself Notes: If anyone would be willing I wouldn't mind a concrete example of a Skrell slurring. The Skrell wiki is kinda written vaguely and I couldn't get any clear examples. The same goes for the name, I think that it is an appropriate Skrell name but if not I can easily change it. Reposting this after my other one was archived...

    The List

Eddie Clark: Simpleton turned diplomat. Devious when he wants to, recently he has been getting more and more lazy. Miley Meyers: Devious reporter, a very curious person. Friends of most, enemy of some. Hakra Drat: Ex smuggler, cat nationalist. Works mostly in atmospherics. Fierce but loyal .
  11. I would like to be added as well.
  12. Hey guys, let me just give you my two cents about the round. I was the captain during the round, Eddie Clark. I was there for the full round so let me tell you my experience. The round began with the usual centcomm report about the pay being halved so I announced it to the crew. Now with that out of the way I left the bridge for the first time that round, (probably 5 minutes into the round). I was immediately ganked by an esword weilding janitor, I would have died if admins had stepped in. I then proceeded to do my usual rounds, abit into the round after the bar had been shut down I was talking to some crewmembers who were upset, trying to reason with them. It was there where I heard one whisper to jump me... I had that person brigged. The round then went on for a bit with the usual back and forth of a Rev round. At a point I went to make a sandwich and let my dog out, I was gone 10 minutes max. when I returned I was informed that engineering was practically revolting. Due to orders from centcomm that stated something along the lines that crewmembers had to be working at all times and the report I had received from the How and the HoP I ordered engineering to be arrested, this also lead to code red being declared. I then made my way to the brig in order to reason with the revs, try and talk it out. You can see in the logs Eddie Clark attempts to talk to the prisoners multiple times however the only response I got was being assaulted with a stool. Not a single Rev would stop yelling about them being innocent, completely engulfed in this stupid RP decision, not responding to anything else. I don't know much about how sec responded but I do know that the majority of the RP in permanent was not effective at all. Sorry for the formatting, I wrote this on my phone.
  13. People probably won't recognize him as much as I'd like but feedback on my main character, Eddie Clark, I play him normally as a QM or a HoP but I played him once as a Captain (and I got a rev round first time ughhh).
  14. CKey: Hartburry Character Name(s)/Position: Eddie Clark (HoP) Extra Notes: Would love to participate.
  15. This thread has been inactive for a bit so I'm going to bump it.
  16. Yeah, I was the HoP during that shift and that was kind of annoying, like the Captain didn't even say a word I think. And the CE went to Cryo within like a minute after an argument with the command staff.
  17. I'll address those two points: In regards to your first point, I am pretty sure that I address that with the Skrell beginning space travel while humanity was in it's metaphorical diapers. This is rather true, the amount of progress Humanity has made since 2016 is remarkable which is why I used that metaphor. In regards to your second point, I was thinking more that it was impressive that he was able to preform surgery using those tools which is why Nanotrasen had interest in hiring him. I guess that is fairly Mary Sueish but I dunno, my character will definitely have his faults.

  19. He's not wanted, he has a bounty on his head by a cartel. He has no criminal record as it stands so they wouldn't know anything.
  20. BYOND Key:Hartburry Character Names:Eddie Clark, Kitty Durant, Jace Kifer (although I doubt most people will recognize him as I hardly play him) How long have you been playing on Aurora:On and off since June Species you are applying to play: Tajara Have you read our lore section's page on this species?:Yeah Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: Well, I want to develop into a better role player around this station and I think that in order to do that I should attempt to play an alien species because of the differences in role-playing you encounter when playing a species. The Tajara are a cool species because of the flexibility of the race in terms of role-playing. I think that a fault to a couple of the races is that you get thrown into playing the stereotype of the race. The Tajara are cool however because they, like the humans, have such a large population that no two Tajara really have an excuse of being alike. With all the different ethnicity of the Tajara it also allows for unique role-playing experiences with other Tajara players. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: This might make a couple of you guys mad but I think personally that out of all the alien races the Tajara are most similar to Humans. They both come from cultures where oftentimes the ruling upper class controls the lower people and they seem to have a lot of diversity in their beliefs (however they are much more excepting of other beliefs than humans because from what I can tell the upper class of the human society really still reigns supreme). Besides the obvious dialect differences Tajara have to be different than humans in terms of what they hold in their minds as valuable. Music for example has shaped Tajaran history more so than any humans history which makes it easier for stories and such to be passed in Tajaran culture because it is not required to know how to read in order to learn history. Also they are much more willing to help those in need because of their brutal history of being put down. Why does this species in particular hold your interest? I think that unlike other races what you can do with a Tajara is much more. You could play as your typical Hharar Tajaran who is simply looking for some work to support his family or you could play as a radical Njarir’Akhran who has been holding a grudge against the people who took his family out of power. There are so many possibilities. Character Name: Hakra Drat Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Hakra is a M'sai Tajaran raised into a small family. At a young age Hakra was deemed by his family very talented. Whether it was his skills at hunting or his clever words he was always receiving praise. However like many young minds nowadays Hakra was a slacker. Not one to ever work for anything he simply just assumed things would go his way. This lead him to hate the stagnation of living in a M'sai hunting family, he felt like he had experienced everything. Hakra then decided to take what money he could find and run off catching a shuttle to the inner colonies, there he was exposed to lifes "fine" aspects, within a month after a streak of bad luck playing poker Hakra found himself penniless on the streets. In an attempt to find a way home Hakra ended agreeing to work for an underground smuggling organization which ran weapons and drugs to multiple cartels. Here Hakra thrieved, his natural cunning and intelligence kept him alive and one day while running a large amount of cash he decided to run off... with the money. Now wanted by multiple Cartel's Hakra sent in an application to Nanotrasen to work on one of their space-stations with the intent of finding himself some sort of craft with which he can run off to his home world with in order to show his family all of his new-found wealth. However he now has multiple cartels all looking for his head as the smuggling company has said that the reward for Hakra's head is half of the cash he owns. For the time being though Hakra has found some safety working as a cargo technician/engineer for the NSS Aurora. What do you like about this character? I think Hakra allows me to play a devious character, kind of like one of my previous characters Kitty Durant but in comparison to her he will be much more sane. I will enjoy playing as him because he will always be trying to find new ways to make money or slack off. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Uhm I'm not sure... I think I've definitely gotten a lot better though since I got white-listed for the Heads of Staff though. Notes: I just want to make sure you guys know that even though Hakra is a slacker and is affiliated with illegal things I will not find any opportunity to grief and cause mischief. I promise you Hakra wont be some character who will beg the chemist for space drugs and proceed to go and afk at the bar while seeing all the pretty colors. I will role-play him well and with respect to the servers rules and just the general unspoken ethics of being a good role-player on the server. Edit I fixed a typo in the character biography which made it seem like Hakra was a criminal.
  21. Would there be any possibility of me still being allowed to play one? I was really excited to try it out and I think I have a couple great ideas for roleplaying situations on the station. Also custom races are awesome.
  22. BYOND Key: Hartburry Character Names: Eddie Clark is the only one who people will recognize How long have you been playing on Aurora: I started around last June but was busy with school so I had to slow down for a bit but now I have much more spare time. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes, twice Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: The Kocasslani present a new challenge for me roleplaying wise. My previous character Eddie Clark was very easy; he was a young person in over his head with Nanotrasen command. I played him as a typical white collar corporate ladder climber. Eddie was diplomatic and always trying to please, a Kocasslani is the opposite. Kocasslani rely on emotion to thrive, whether it is their practically fanatical devotion to their religion or the strict gender laws in the race with men and women having clearly defined roles in society. From a young age Kocasslani are thrown into a culture with many different spoken and unspoken rules, this I assume would put intense psychological pressure to conform and fit in. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Humans are devoted to diversity Kocasslani are devoted to conformity. In the world of Space Station 13 the human race has completely absorbed itself into the space age. They have splintered into thousands of different cultural groups, however the Kocasslani have not. Whether it is through The Blooding or their Burns of Feality Kocasslani never forget where they come from and who they are. Discovering space only strengthened the unity of the Kocasslani, scientifically speaking the chances of the Kocasslani discovering 12 different planets very similar to their own would be close to 0%. However 12 different planets were found, whether this is a stroke of great luck or perhaps divine intervention doesn't matter, the Kocasslani's faith was reaffirmed. They truly live in the Holy Land. Why does this species in particular hold your interest? I have two primary reasons, I want to be a part of expanding/supporting this server's custom lore and I also want to play a more emotionally driven character than Eddie Clark which I believe I will find in this race (I detailed the evidence why up above). Playing a good Kocasslani mean more than telling every Skrell you see to go space themselves. It means that you need to become your emotions. You need to decide what you value in life and then stick to it. A Kocasslani would keep his friends incredibly close and would hate his enemies with a passion. That is the kind of player I want to try next, also I think think the dialect of never using contractions is pretty cool and you could do some cool things with your characters speech. Character Name: Kiklisani Visilini Kiisni (referred to by the crew mainly as some form of Kik or Kikli) Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs (Note: I will refer to him as Kik for simplicities sake) Kik is a strange one, raised by his mother as a girl he was taught Science (which is frowned upon in mainstream Kocasslani culture). His father died before he was born. His mother's took solace in the fact that she could pass on her vast knowledge of Science to her soon to be born daughter however she gave birth to a boy. This pushed her past the edge, Kik's mother lied to him and made him believe that he was a women. It was until he had matured that he became aware of his mother's deception. This realization combined with the rejection from mainstream Kocasslani culture because of his knowledge of science isolated him. The only thing that hadn't abandoned him was science. Turning his back on society Kik became enthralled with the study of life and technology. He has a dream of one day morphing technology and organic life into one perfect life form. Kik also is deeply religious. Despite being a man of science Kik is also deeply religous, he has developed a close personal bond with religion and tries to blend his study of technology with prayer. Before experimenting you can oftentimes see Kik consulting with the gods or reading the Blood Book, he believes that the gods gave us life for us to discover and that you cannot truly be a Walker without attempting to learn all of the miracles of the world. Kik studied by himself for many years, however he realized that in order to learn about all of the creatures of the universe he needed to explore. He believed that his next step was to study humans. Hitching a ride with Smugglers Kik left his homeworld and traveled to Sol. It was there where he signed up with Nanotrasen as a researcher. He has however had trouble adjusting to the loose Human society, between having his religion frowned upon and being forced to interact with the Skrell (whom he blames for his fathers death) Kik has had a rough start to life with other cultures. What do you like about this character? Kik is a character who at the start I will be playing as a somewhat recluse, however I plan to naturally progress him and help him acquire some close friends. I also am excited to have im interact with the Chaplain and certain civilians especially the skrell. Also it will be interesting having him interact with other Kocasslani because of his choice to become a Scientist, these tensions will let me have an interesting round full of character development which I felt that I lacked with Eddie Clark. How would you rate your role-playing ability? C+ on a good day but I am developing. I think that I just need to play more until my characters finally click with me and I am able to fully engross myself in my character. Notes: Another thing I am eager to try out is learning how to express my distaste for Skrell players without having to resort to harassment that will end up in a physical altercation. Also I plan to play Kik primarily as a Xenobiologist or a Geneticist. However he might end up doing some work as a plain Scientist. Fuck the Skrell
