  1. As I play Research Director a lot, I punish genetics as often for breaking directive 4 as I do R&D and xenobiology for taking things out of their departments. If I see slimes in the station, you bet your ass I'm getting someone fired. Same goes for a random person with force gloves or a stun revolver in the halls. They're breaking corporate regulations, and as such should be penalized. Same goes for genetics. If someone wants to have powers outside of genetics? There's a form for that. Someone wants to give mining a mech? There's a form for that. Want to do weapons testing outside of R&D? There's a form for that. Same with giving weapons or materials to other departments. What we really need is more IAA checking paperwork and dishing out punishments if their advice isn't heeded.
  2. Why not make IPCs overload like the station androids with flashes, then? There's really no reason for that mechanic to exist. I can understand that they can weld without having goggles on, and having immunity to being tased is an advantage on its own. As for taking on IPCs ranged, lethals /do/ work quite well on IPCs due to their limbs being incredibly easy to blow off with lasers. Two shots with a laser pistol will take off a limb (The ones the Captain/HoP/HoS have) and render an IPC completely immobile. I saw it happen when the HoP had to fire Deimos and Phobos IC. This obviously is not the ideal situation, and should be looked at. As for them having brute resistance, I'm assuming that's mainly due to their limbs not breaking, but instead completely being removed in any situation. If you're an IPC, you know that depressurization is pretty much a death sentence unless you're really damn lucky. Need to crowbar open that firelock? Nope, your hands spark every 3 seconds and you drop it. Overheating and get into a safe section of the station? Nope, you're probably still going to die because you take forever to cool down after you've been overheating. Took too long putting on that suit cooler in a bad situation? Too bad, you're going to die anyway and your body will turn into gibs as you slowly melt to death. With all that in mind, I have died significantly fewer times as my IPC characters than my human characters. Half of this is because I've been playing a lot better, avoiding antags, running from dangerous situations and letting security deal with it as they see fit, and half of it is that my IPC is /just a little more sturdy/ than their human counterpart. On the flipside, I've been oneshot by wizards more than once, same with nuke ops. The race has a lot more strengths than other races, but they also have some pretty extreme weaknesses compared to other species.

  4. This almost makes me think that the EMP weakness should be added to station androids and the AI as well. This would definitely give more validity to the weapon. Also, there are quite a lot of people who play IPC now, so there are almost certainly several IPCs at any given time aboard the station. This shouldn't be something that surprises people anymore.

  6. Hang on, let's not shove this thread away from the original topic of conversation: IPCs getting their own language, something that all other species on the station have without exception. If we want to talk about having them be universal translators, that's a conversation for another topic and should be treated as a separate issue.

  8. No, but wouldn't they be programmed in such a way as to understand each other? That's the purpose of drivers in computers, to act as a translator between software and hardware/the OS. If you have Unathi technology and Tajaran technology on a Human space station, wouldn't they all have to conform to a universal standard in order to be accepted? Why would there not be an industry standard in place when the races are so mixed in the workforce? Of course they're not identical. Do they have something in common? Of course. Having IPCs dislike what they consider to be inferior uplifts/synthetics is a good thing that creates conflict. With that in mind, they already still speak the same language that all other synthetics do. The same can be said for Tajara or Unathi that don't fit along with the norm. They're heavily shunned by the rest and their life is harder because of it, so they put themselves into little groups. I'd hope not. Kate's saving grace is her uniqueness, in my opinion. The idea in my mind has always been that the synthetics are the other. They're not all from the same, nor do they all have the same origin, but they all ended up in the same place. They're all mostly mechanical and that's a significant part of their identity. Am I wrong about that? You don't all have to come from the same place to end up speaking a common language.

  10. Look at Katelynn, for example. I would have been fine having access to Sol common /instead/ of the IPC's language, as my character's backstory is based around them being born and raised on earth, then becoming a cyborg. However, that idea got stuck down, so she magically /forgot/ the language that she grew up speaking, instead suddenly knowing tradeband? Makes sense. This is the second best option. Have they ever been anything other than robot people? Only with jackfractal's update of IPCs and IPC lore were they made anything different. There is a sense of community between IPCs, even if it's significantly different than it is for the other races. It's a sign of common heritage, more than anything.

  12. For what reason? This would actually help those who can't tell, as only IPCs will start beep booping to each other. If you see a Tajaran beep booping, everybody will instantly know, "Oh, that's a robot." Additionally, why would that be a reason to deny something that /all/ other races have? Are IPCs not worth giving their own language to simply because more work has been put into them to give them more avenues of RP? This is heavy RP, it's not meant to be combat oriented. Do you know how fast an IPC's leg is taken off with a laser rifle/pistol? It takes 2-3 shots and they're out of the fight permanently.

  14. I always thought the idea was that if they are able to speak in their own language, (or communicate telepathically, like some species would) they would be able to more effectively convey an idea that would be more time consuming to convey in the other languages. At least that's how I've imagined the reason that robots speak the way they do.

  16. Furry, I've got to point this out here. Your round was shut down by you when you decided to go into cryo instead of letting me deal with things IC, which I /did/ end up doing. I spent most of that round working with Internal Affairs and the AI to get the Captain dealt with ICly. Not to be too cynical here, but you probably should have stuck around a lot longer. I'd say the Captain actually ended up creating a lot of RP, even if they weren't apart of it. We had a lengthy discussion over comms for ~20 minutes about the issue before I decided that it needed to be dealt with.

  18. I wouldn't be opposed to it being a combination of beeps, whirrs, boops, pings, etc.

  20. Since the threat regarding IPCs picking up the language of the species that they pick (If they are a shell, which is in itself a problem that needs to be resolved), we need to have a chat about whether or not IPCs should be able to have their own unique language, as all other species do. The main problem here is that IPCs currently get tradeband, which can be learned by /all/ crew members, regardless of their race. This is hardly anything near a racial language, even though IPCs are considered a different race. I'm merely recommending that IPCs get their own language, as all other species get their own languages. This wouldn't even normally be a problem for me, but with the advent of my specific character's problem, they can't speak common anymore, which can be a pain in the ass. I really wanna know if there are any good reasons why this shouldn't be a thing.

  22. Just got one thing to say about this. Butts. https://gyazo.com/0a3528cc3d2c14fbe4c897463c3dda00

  24. I guess this works for Katelynn Mcmullen. None of it needs explaining. Small Girl, Big Gun Trigger Happy Robot Girl
  25. +1. But on a more important note, something really should be done about genetics. Nobody cares that geneticists can see through walls, and nobody cares that they can have free cold resistance if they want to. But Telekinesis? That's really damn annoying to /everybody/ in the round. Something needs to be done about genetics. Making it antag only and removing the visual sprite could be pretty handy, if you made the objects thrown by it deal damage and have a higher cooldown.
