    Socks!

Like underwear created an underwear epidemic? Personally, I'd prefer not to have to think everyone's just wearing shoes without socks, because ew. We should be far more worried about the 2D foot fetish caused by space men without socks. I support socks.
  2. But what if there's an event and we get stranded on the derelict? "Where's your turtleneck, Jaylor?" "Oh, it's back on the station." Can't have that. That, and call me crazy but giving CSI's an easier time will actually help me get captured, because I've been trying to plan a proper prison break for a while now, but I can't break out of a prison if I don't get captured.
  3. Playing devil's advocate here - reports and complaints don't do anything, nor does any other action I can think of. Complaints on the forums go into a special kind of limbo, duty officers seem very fond of just demoting them to cadet for a week or two, and any IC action you want to take can be instantly rebuffed with "lol not canon, stop u metagrudge." I can think of one officer in particular with novels of complaints written about them, and then duty officers did some nonsense and ultimately nothing happened. I'm actually not aware of a single instance of security job banning since I've joined the server, they're generally more broadly administered as temporary server bans and antag bans. That said, making security whitelisted wouldn't solve anything - it'd just make the role immensely difficult to fill up, and you'd have the pseudo-police running around with stun rods and cable cuffs. That, or a cheeky Head of Personnel who hand-picks people and makes them all security. Neither circumstance is exactly ideal. However, the problem you're trying to address is a very real one - officers routinely ignore the actual corporate regulations, and nothing is done about an individual protesting their arrest (to the point where, as an antagonist security officer, saying "it's okay" while kidnapping people to form your own permabrig fight club is a legitimate strategy.) I'd prefer to see an understood increase in the expectation to create quality RP, rather than performing an arrest on a whim without so much as consulting the corporate regulations. These players will often later claim that the event was "non-canon" for the express purpose of preventing punitive action against their character. I'm not sure what hard rule could be created to combat this, since it's late for me and my cognitive functions are beginning to slip, but I'll sleep on it and revisit this, because there's definitely a problem that needs addressing, here. However, I'm firmly convinced that whitelists aren't the answer. For now, though, I'll leave you all with this: Can we provide incentive, positive or negative, for security to do its job properly?
  4. > Tries to be an asshole, creates character expressly for this purpose. > Still gets popularity votes.
  5. Forget which server I saw it on (probably Liberty) but there were "virtual reality" headsets that - when equipped - would transport the user to a virtual world while leaving an identical catatonic-esque mob staring into the VR headset in place of the player. I want our holodeck to do this, and I want our hallucinations to have a chance to do this (instead of the dumb tired old "XYZ IS HITTING ME! I HAVE A GUN! FIRE! BOMB ALERT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!") Seems like an appropriate replacement for the holodeck fire if you ninnies are absolutely dead-set on removing it.
  6. I'm still not quite sure what your concern is, though - sometimes, less is more, as they say. I could certainly weave a tale of woe and sorrow, about how this turtleneck in particular was bought for him by his mother as he was learning to fly, only to find out a day later that the space station she was staying on exploded - and how he simply cannot bear to part with it as an eternal reminder of the family he'd neglected to protect! But that's extremely corny, not to mention the "deep emotional connection" card seems to be a common theme with other accepted applications. Nothing against them, but if we keep playing the "deeply sentimental item" card, it gets very old very quickly. Sometimes, a turtleneck you bring from home is just a turtleneck you bring from home. Requests have been accepted for similar reasons in the past without a fuss. It's not like it has its own custom sprite with glowsticks on the belt and neon-colored parachute pants (amusing as that would be.)
  7. To address the original question - yes, mass murder is okay, so long as the players are having fun and you're not breaking any rules (which is indeed possible!) An example: as a wizard, I spontaneously appeared in cargo, threw a ritual knife to the ground, and demanded that the cargo crew kill themselves so that I could capture their essence and turn them into large void creatures. One guy (surprisingly) did as I said, cutting his arm off and killing himself in the process; the officer who reported to the cargo bay after the others had run away and reported my presence was given the same ultimatum, but eventually I just elected to use the Mutate spell and punch him to death after he tried to baton me. Then three officers showed up after that, vowing vengeance for my slaughter of their comrade, we had a lovely standoff and they died. By the time everyone who came to fight me was dead, I had upwards of ten minions. I didn't just order them around and such, though - I actually took the time to build a bit of lore behind them, calling them grandiose soul-powered hell-engines that were the founders of my new empire, etc etc. From there, I spent a good deal of time fortifying the bridge I'd since taken over into the seat of my new empire, threatening everyone with death if they did not submit to my will, yadda yadda yadda. I was able to create an atmosphere that the vast majority of players took the time to state that they enjoyed after all was said and done. At the end of the shift, I'd murdered the entire crew and half of the ensuing ERT that had been called after me (and the majestic wizard king died to a popped lung when he'd accidentally teleported somewhere that was vented, go figure.) Now, the difference between doing this and spontaneously flooding the station with plasma is forewarning. People like to be forewarned and they like to be involved; the more you involve them, the happier they'll be. The 'no ganking' rule states that you can't kill people without RP, and that's fair enough - you wouldn't want to be wandering down the hallway, minding your own business, only to fall over and die from plasma inhalation a split second later, would you? But think about that order you were given. Everyone on the station is hostile and you need to murder all of them - a noble goal. So how can you do that while continuing to involve them? One thing I've always wanted to do as a malfunctioning AI is gain the assistance (willfully or not) of a roboticist and force him to turn crewmembers I've slaughtered into cyborgs slaved to my laws. In the same vein as the suggestion above, it keeps them involved in the round, and people like that - but at the same time, you're completing your objective (to kill them.) It's a much more intriguing solution to dying to a plasma leak, and it keeps them engaged in the round. On the other hand, if you're absolutely dead-set on filtering plasma throughout the station, I would personally advise loudly announcing it and viciously attacking anyone who gets in your way as you chug on down to Atmospherics. Sure, you might die, but it keeps people engaged, and people like to be engaged - do that, and I doubt you'll get bwoinked (and if you do, they'll understand your methods.)
  8. We've obviously never played a game together before for you to make those sorts of comments, sir. The item isn't actually called "suspicious turtleneck" either; if you'd bothered to read the original post (you clearly didn't.) Really? Could you give me a list of names out of the approximately 50+ unique "cargonians" and others that claim to be ex-pirates? Because I'm starting to think you're using hyperbole as a means to an end, rather than simply looking at the application for what it is.
  9. One could make the same assertion about requiring a custom tobacco pipe, but that's none of my business. To stick out in a particular manner that would behoove the character in question is the very point of these applications, isn't it? I've always done whatever I can to make it glaringly obvious that Jaylor is a suspicious individual with a checkered past and has no desire to "fit in" in beyond what is required for his job, but character records and flavor text can really only go so far - for those who haven't gotten the hint already, there's this!
  10. I'm just going to throw out a ton of mechanical parts along with probable function, cherry pick as you please. Gyrostabilizer - Regulates the IPC's ability to remain upright. Auditory Sensors - As opposed to ears. Photoreceptors - As opposed to eyes. Actuators - Located in the arms, legs, and anywhere requiring movement or rotation. Disabling these would be the equivalent of breaking a bone on a human, minus the pain and whatnot. Heat Sink - IPC's don't need to breathe, but they do need to maintain a specific temperature. Damaging this would result in being swiftly overheated if not repaired soon (think of the lethality of a popped lung on a human.) Micro Engine - The "heart" of an IPC. Insert your favorite power source here.
  11. I totally forgot about this. If I'm not mistaken, this is when Jaylor beat Roy Wyatt to death with a metal bat after getting a fire axe stuck in his head.
  12. Despite the fact that the shirt hangs lower when a character is facing sideways and this bothers me a little - yes, this is correct.
  13. That's even more confusing. That means by "duster" you meant "turtleneck," which is not even remotely similar. A duster would be cool though, but it's a little too much "space cowboy" for a guy who routinely just does the quartermaster job (and on occasion, engineering.) Aw. Suggestion thread here I come. Sticking in the code I've provided should give it the tacticool sprite (as opposed to the tactical one - they do look different, if only slightly).
  14. But all I wanted was a turtleneck and knuckledusters. I don't even know where you got the idea of cuffs, sir - but these, I do not want.
  15. If nothing else, now we've got a solid reminder if this sort of thing crops up on a daily basis, as opposed to "I never did that" and nobody being able to state the contrary.
  16. For item_defines.dm /obj/item/clothing/under/syndicate/fluff/sturtleneck //Jaylor's Turtleneck - Jaylor Rameau - EvilBrage name = "\improper Borderworlds turtleneck" desc = "A loose-fitting turtleneck, common among borderworld pilots and criminals. One criminal in particular is missing his, apparently." icon_state = "tactifool" item_state = "bl_suit" item_color = "tactifool" siemens_coefficient = 1 Not even sure how coding would work for the knuckles though, if those even get approved.
  17. BYOND Key: EvilBrage Character name: Jaylor Rameau Item name: Borderworlds Turtleneck Why is your character carrying said item to work? He wears it from home because it's typically more comfortable than the ill-fitting jumpsuits provided by NanoTrasen (one size fits all, my ass.) So long as he wears other articles of clothing indicative of his job on the station (a cargo hat when in cargo, or a vest when in engineering,) who is NanoTrasen to deny the opportunity to save a few credits? Item function(s): The turtleneck serves as a message to those who don't know Jaylor, broadcasting clearly that he is suspicious as fuck. Item description: A loose-fitting turtleneck, common among borderworld pilots and criminals. One criminal in particular is missing his, apparently. Item appearance: icon_state = "tactifool" item_state = "bl_suit" item_color = "tactifool" Additional comments: I wanted knuckle dusters too (functionally, they would increase unarmed damage to alium claw levels), but I was told I probably could not have them, which makes me pretty sad. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  18. Two months have passed and not a single gripe or complaint - truly this is an indication that I've provided the most immaculate of suggestions.
  19. I'd say getting killed in-game makes people rage more than politalks and religion, but we're not about to ban that too, are we? Anyways, I'm really not seeing any new arguments here. You claim it's bad for the server, while you have no data to support that assertion apart from personal anecdotes (but you're still here, imagine that.) Sorry, but there are some people in this crazy world of ours who just want to go out and be offended so they can justify their childish behavior, and those are the kinds of toxic people we don't need on the server. Trust me when I say that if it's not politics or religion, the perpetually dissatisfied will find something else to be offended and quit over.

  21. I'm afraid I'm with Jakebot on this one, Tenz. The reason behind the rampant robusting is an inability to separate IC from OOC; painful as it is to say, I think you're giving them way too much credit, simply because their characters are an idealized version of themselves, and they never want to lose. On the other hand, the very manner in which SS13 typically plays favors quick action and aggression - the best defense is a good offense, so it may benefit an event to establish the invulnerability of the creature beforehand through a bit of micromanaging. And by "micromanaging," I mean have a robust player volunteer to get gibbed with a powerful weapon on their body. This generally indicates that the someone or something that's attacking them should not be fucked with. If they don't get the hint after that, well, they should've known better.

  23. Oh, you can complain and attempt reform all you like - after all, you're entitled to your opinion just like everyone else. What you shouldn't expect is for everyone to agree - and it seems you're equating political and religious disagreements to a fundamental degradation of self-esteem or something ridiculous like that. If a political or religious discussion is all it takes to make someone flip a shit and quit the server when there's a perfectly usable toggle button next to you, good riddance, they're obviously not mature enough to handle the lion's share of the subject matter we have here. What next? When someone is offended by gore, will we remove the gibs? Then perhaps office pets after that, because a PETA activist says it's encouraging animal captivity and cruelty? You know what - violence isn't nice, let's remove all intents except help. We are not here to coddle you and help you through your insecurities. We are not here to censor the world so that little sensitive egos will remain unscathed. We are not here to acquiesce your personal version of decency. We're here to play a game, and if OOC is too intense for you, there's functionality to block it. We already have a very generous set of rules regarding what cannot be discussed; if you'd like to continue to dumb the conversations down, you'll be pushing away individuals who prefer servers that don't so eagerly embrace an FCC style of censorship.
