A concern to levy, not that anything I have to say is important; the removal of shell IPCs and zero-consequence MMI brained IPCs (largely in combination with each other) was removed less so for its issues of transhumanist themes as much as it was essentially for the issue of the true immortality such comforts provided, as MMIs even now can almost indefinitely preserve a brain, and if the shell is destroyed you just throw the MMI (which is a biological processor essentially, more so now) into a new shell and call it a day. That's gone, thankfully, so only synthetics are technically immortal. Or are they?
The wiki does not seem to overtly mention whether or not the Aut'akh will be able to circumvent their own mortality, given the apparent transient nature of replacing the majority of someone's bodily functions into a bio-synthetic body. The wiki also doesn't mention any details about their lifespan being influenced in any way or another. I find these to be particular important details because they add certain levels of nuance to decision-making and consequence. Presently, security is essentially punished for taking acts that endanger themselves or other people if they think they can get away with "We can clone them" as an acceptable 'out' of a hostage-taking scenario.
I'd hate to see the pitfall show up regarding this issue, because the effort to hold people accountable for their behavior and also hold people to an understanding that they must play their characters as if they are mortal and generally possess aversions to decisions that would likely kill them was a very painstaking effort to keep rooted in place for as long as it has. Sensible conjecture would indicate this kind of technology likely creates its own problems of maintenance for the new body, but assuming the stars line up and an Aut'akh keeps well-oiled (so to speak), they'd live up to 15 years over what their fleshier compatriots would live up to, but still mortal as their brain would likely contract conditions such as dementia, senility or Alzheimer's due to aging.
Exact details would be greatly appreciated in addressing those issues since these are particularly important things to consider given how they will inevitably influence decision-making in the heat of a conflicted round.Aut'akh wouldn't know if their lifespans are any longer, because they've only existed for 10 years.

For reference, lore devs nor contributors cannot vote for dismissal of mechanical suggestions.
Also, voting for dismissal because instrument code is horrible, unoptimized (both for client and the server), and because this would cause a major bit of annoyance.
I was being sarcastic.

Not until instrument code is updated and made not bad.
Voting for dismissal. -
Jackboot says you can apply with Aut'akh, but 'can you wait for them to be playable.'

Two things I'll address.
One, the lore team is not one person. We do not all have the same goal. Whatever you want with Diona, take it up with the Diona loredev. We work in teams, not as a collective consciousness.
Two, retcons exist. Aut'akh are essentially being retconned in, much as any faction, to a date of 10 years ago in their current state. Oss is, of course, not on the notable synthetics list, because it is not there yet.
To 'other factions', we might work on it. If you want it to get done faster, make a thread and a design document. -

So... the Aut'akh are Unathi that have closed the tech gap... but.. Humans and other species haven't been witness to this tech before? At least not in the same manners to my knowledge. I don't think personally that NT would even go out on a limb to hire these guys if they are so hated... Say what you will but NT is a company. They are all about image. They may be evil and rich but if everyone says, "Fuck you" and stops buying. They die. End of story. I just see too many holes... This AI, Oss that produces these blueprints to make these Unathi to allow themselves to augment and change their organs.. It just.. seems like they are being reached for. And that doesn't make good story. If you're reading a book and the author is throwing the line out for an idea or topic.. it kills interest imo. It has to flow. This just doesn't flow. I'd suggest look at boosting our current listing of our species. New emotes. Fleshed out backstory. More contacts. Maybe a fucking massive Dionae showing up. I don't know.. but this just seems like a throw to build off the Lii'dra attack and its not a good one.
11Most of your post is very confusing, but I will mansplain a few things.

There's exactly two human factions that would. Eridani, and the Techno Conglomerate. Only the latter is said to have anything like this, and they are far away from Tau Ceti. However, this does not mean that eventually, humans can't have full body prosthesis.

Hated by who, exactly?
The Hegemony has no influence over NT.
Skrell have not seen this, they are probably just very wary about the 'Oss' part. Which, they'd be just as wary as the Aurora having an AI lmao.
Tajara have not seen this, we don't know how they'd feel. (They might like some cold-adapted prosthetics, maybe.)
Vaurca certainly do not care about the affairs of others in such a manner, have no influence with NT.
Dominia, we have no idea.
Elyra probably doesn't care.
Eridani probably likes it, even.
NT does not care much about what Sol thinks.

You will have to explain how it's being 'reached for', as this exists in lore already.

What do any of these things have to do with this?

What does this have to do with Aut'akh?

Here's a better idea, shamelessly copied from a fetish server.
On Vorestation, you can take a department role (colored, though it doesn't have to be,) and there is a #company-bulletins channel that will occasionally ping. Like. '@Medical, Medical staff have been requested to assist with a critically injured patient. ' -
The soul anchor is simply a connection to Oss.

What's the public reaction of Skrells to a cargo cult of self-modifying AI? I don't think they would be happy at all.
Oss is not self modifying. It's a colony management program given like 500 other functions, and only by Paradigms.

They're otherwise augmented Unathi that possess large synthetic augmentations to their bodies that make them more synthetic than Unathi. If I wanted to play an IPC, but decided against it and just played an Auto'akh like a shell IPC, that'd be iffy, wouldn't it?
Your Unathi whitelist would be stripped.

I'm personally not a fan of the look of the holographic plants. They seem kind of busy and out-of-place. Walking over them to change the color seems meh and clicking on them to change the type seems like it would get in the way of, like, actions. I assume you can't hide things in the holoplants. Side note: do they satisfy the cargo bounty for potted plants?
Hiding behind plants kind of... doesn't make sense with the holographic plants. On its own, seems like it should definitely be a thing. Really cool, actually. But
Water coolers are good. No reason not to have nice water coolers in places.
Kegs, I mean. Sure. Though the bar doesn't have a lot of room for that xuixi keg and there's plenty of juice in the boozeomat already...
3Hiding behind holoplants does not work. Also no, you cannot put items in them. Additionally, as to bounties, no, as I'm pretty sure that's a Web Interface thing.

This statement is incorrect, as cyberplants have currently a 20% chance to replace a standard plant
You see, Arrow, I actually stated that later in the thread. What I'm trying to do is establish that regular potted plants are not going away.

for A Needlessly Large PR
https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/5882
Hi, Hollywood's ParadoxSpace here. I recently made a big-ass PR. This big-ass PR has a lot of things in it, and I'm not sure which one Arrow was asking me to make a feedback thread about, and he actually has a gun to my head right now, so I'll list them all here.
First things first, holographic plants.
Cyberplants are an Eris port. The actual plant can be changed by clicking on it (I tried my best to resprite all the vanilla potted plants.) These DO NOT FULLY REPLACE THE REGULAR POTTED PLANTS. LIVING PLANTS WILL STILL EXIST. Cyberplants are their own, separate item than potted plants. The color of the plant can also be changed by walking over it, however, this will dim the plant gradually, so you will need to click it again to maintain full brightness. I have placed a few in choice locations across the station (to give off a more cyberpunk vibe, and to emphasize some areas that potted plants would not survive in, such as the dangers of engineering, and the unlivable hellscape staffed by the demons known as scientists.) I have also ported nanacode to make potted plants randomly spawn as cyberplants. This is a 20% chance. Again, living potted plants will still exist. They're pretty rare. Eventually, I can make them buildable, but this would be out of scope on an already M A S S I V E PR. Tune in next week. I have also added more potted plants in general to departments entirely free of greenery. Science still gets none.
Next, I have fixed the barsign. It is no longer visible from the backroom. You must go infront of it to change it. If you're opposed to this, I don't know what to tell you. In the place of the arcade machines, I have placed two cyberplants.
cyberpunk 2460
Next, I have made plants layer over mobs.
I don't really have a screencap for it, just imagine your character hiding behind a potted plant. Really picture yourself among the fronds.
Lastly, I have generally increased the overall moisture level of the station. Two more water coolers have been added to the map.
One in the medical lobby,
One in Security.
A soda dispenser has also been added to Cargo, along with drinking glasses.
A secret beer keg has been added to Engineering.
A keg of Xuizi juice, for Unathi drinking, has been added to the bar.
I guess the filing cabinet in robotics was moved. Had to make room for a plant.
That about covers it. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. -

They don't like changing how they normally operate because there isn't any need for it. Why dismantle the system that works?
Because it needs to be compulsory in order to collect data on how it would actually go.
-
How about a better one, that filters gasses or has armor or something?
-
No, I don't mean ultimate authority, just authority within their department.
-
Because if the department officer is being a dick or going somewhere I don't want him to be, I want the authority to tell him to not do that.
-
If they're not exclusively under the command of the head of staff, I'd atleast like them to be mostly under the command of the head of staff, or it'd be really weird.

If you don't think anyone in security would like it enough to do it when given the option, is it really something we want to add in without giving them alternatives?
There wouldn't even need to be a HoS to organize it. Some officers could stay where they want, while others could do what they want outside of department. Everyone's happy that way.
It's not about if they like it or not. It's about 'it's a new change and people don't like changing how they normally operate.' I'd rather they see how they like it or not while actually doing it.
-
23 minutes ago, tbear13 said:
I think the best way to do this would be to start officers as standard, non-department officers and let the HoS decide who goes where. Instead of forcing a different playstyle on people, just give them an opportunity to try it out. Add in the offices, and let people decide what they like more.
That's not really the point of the suggestion. If it were optional, it would never be done.
Edit:
Also, this isn't a suggestion to gimp Security. Just to emphasize the Secure part, and make security play a little less orkoid.
-
Implants are cool, but humans should not be able to understand more than like 10% of Skrellian. Plus, as we've seen with Siik'tau, it would make Skrell players extremely uncomfortable.
-
wow for once something i can't code myself
Essentially, instead of Security just being a formless mob not beheld to defending any departments, Sec would be assigned to a department.
What does this mean?
For the uninitiated, essentially, each department (Engineering, Medical, Science, Supply) would have a little Security office. Contains every console they need, a recharger, a locker, yadda. In character setup, there would be a 'Department Preference for Sec' button that would mark down what department you'd prefer to be in, and if no one else has selected that, you will get it. Your Officer will spawn with either a department armband, or maybe some kind of department-flavored helmet/vest. They will spawn with a headset with both channels, and will be at the direct command of whoever's in charge of your department at the moment.
But why?
All too often, Security never pays attention to other departments during Code Red. We are often forced to seek other avenues of defense, such as ordering guns, making pikes, creating gallons of acid, what have you. This change would be meant to pretty much force Security to actually, well, secure us.
-
What do I mean by this?
Add " The primary goal of antagonists is to DRIVE A STORY AND TO GENERATE INTERACTION." to the standards Security/Command is held to. Far too often, neither camp is very interested in driving the plot of the round, but ending it. I believe it's only fair that the burden of an enjoyable round is shouldered by all three parties.
