BurgerBB Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 >post a suggestion >a wave of people like it >finish coding the suggestion without posting the code >a wave of people dislike it pls
Aceofspades1228 Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Burger, you didn't wait 24 hours before declaring that the code you're sitting on is better then it is now. It feels like you were going to code and submit this as a PR no matter what feedback you got here, because 15 hours isn't even remotely enough time for a sufficient amount of people to come onto the forums and check suggestions and give earnest critique. As for my opinion on the matter, I do see the benefit in giving the target a brief disorientation effect (randomly moving in different directions) after being flashed, though don't think the white screen should be replaced with the 'blind' effect. I also can agree with having blurry vision immediately afterwards due to readjusting to the light of the station proper.
Ornias Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 You're looking at the flash as an offensive tool. The offensive use of it was removed, leaving it as a defensive one. This was intentional. Now, the flash is not a "DROP EM BOYS" tool. It provides a quick, effective "give me breathing room" if someone attacks you for you to either leg it or reach for another tool. These changes will make it a lot more aggressive, because it will make it a lot more effective. The fact you stumble and are slowed, combined with the ludicrously high number of charges you'd give it, and the fact you're clumsy, means you can just get spam-flashed, completely unable to defend yourself. I like the flash as it is now because it makes the flash a viable self-defense tool for all the Heads that get them (AKA: not able to insta-down antags who dare to not shoot the HoP on sight), while not losing all usage for security purposes. I'd ask that you explain your reasoning behind each change to the flash if you want people to get behind your idea.
BurgerBB Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 Wasn't expecting people to dogpile the idea tbh but here is my mindset with every flash change. Modular Flashes Flashes can be weak, okay, or strong. Weak flashes will be used by non-security, including cyborgs and heads of staff. If you're not security and you're normally supposed to have a flash, you'll spawn instead with a weak flash that breaks easier and has a bad battery. Okay flashes will be used by security, and if there is ever an issue where flashes are OP when used by security, I could just nerf the okay flashes instead. Same goes for all the other flashes. Modular flashes are for immersion purposes too. I don't like how the entire flash is useless if the bulb breaks, why not replace the bulb? Also, how does a flash get its power source? This update will give flashes interchangeable bulbs and batteries so it actually makes sense. Batteries Explained above, immersion. It also allows me to control the balance of weak flashes, and allows me to determine how many charges a flash should get and let players customize their own. Also allows for some great antagery (phoron injection, anyone?) Bulbs Different bulbs determine the strength of the flash itself. Think of it like insulted gloves and budget insulated gloves. It's difficult to use a weak flash to hit someone offensively given how easy it is to break, especially when you consider the shitty AA battery the flash also has. Research Research needs more non-lethal objects. If people don't like this idea, then perhaps bulbs can be order from cargo instead. Blindness No clue why people think I'm REPLACING the white light, or worse, no clue why people think this is a bad idea. It's adding the white light and then adding the temporary blindness to the player. The blind flag actually MAKES them mechanically blind, meaning that they won't be able to see things mechanically. If you're flashed in the current version, you can still see messages like "Rob Oster hit Urist Fag with the frying pan!" when instead it should say "You hear a metal bang." Blurry eyes Eye blur seems like it would stick around after you've been hit in the eyes with a high powered flash. it's an entirely cosmetic effect, and only lasts 10 seconds, so it's no big deal. Flashes causing confusion/disorientation If you're hit by a high power light straight into the eyes, you're going to be dazed and confused by wear your bearings are. You won't stutter around like an idiot, but it's likely you'll be a few tiles off in your intended direction. If you're in a large hallway, no big deal. If you're in a tight area, you'll be affected. Flashes causing slow I might remove this tbh just to calm the fears that flashes would be used for evil more than they should be. Besides, the taser needs to be used more. Flashes causing clumsiness You're blind. Disoriented. Dazed. You're going to be clumsy and possibly might end up shooting yourself in the foot.
Bygonehero Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 How will this effect vac who are already mucked up by any flashes?
BurgerBB Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 How will this effect vac who are already mucked up by any flashes? Unless you have a better idea, antmen would be affect the same as it currently is, but just with improved code.
