[Accepted] Elianabeth's Skrell Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Elianabeth

Character Names: Tristen Wolff, Simon Coburn, Elvin Fox

Species you are applying to play: Skrell

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Dark blue or Muddy Brown (Unsure yet)

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yep

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

Out of all the alien races, I find the Skrell to be one of the most 'alien'. I find that a problem sometimes when it comes to aliens is that they appear far too 'human', which makes sense since no actual alien is playing SS13. Skrell's speech seems alien, and their worldview I feel will be interesting to play and should differ enough from other humans in order to provide an interesting experience. They're also asexual, which I feel is easier for me to play.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

They're prideful, not willing to engage in arguments or fight unless they're certain they can win. They also come off as emotionally cold, despite actually having an expressive range of emotions. I find it challenging and fun to express an emotional character in a stunted way, as in general Skrell-dialogue seems fun to roleplay. I also enjoy expressing Sci-Fi ideas within SS13, and due to their view of implants, I think it could present good improv-opportunities to talk about the futuristic technology and culture they live with.

Character Name: Qlglinshi Glul-Joolb

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Qlglinshi was born on Jargon IV in 2331, the only surviving egg of his parent's first cluster, to a world that had just begun recovering in the aftermath of the Glorsh Rebellion. His parents were traditionalist followers of Qeblak, and instilled a deep desire on Qlglinshi to unlock the secrets of the stars for himself. Both his parents worked on navy technology - His mother on implants, his father on ship engines. As a child, he was captivated with naval ships and weapons, hope against the return of atrocities of the past. However, he did not have faith he could become an effective footsoldier, as the early anti-sterilization treatment his parents received still left him genetically weakened. Instead, when accepted to University of Qeeglios in 2351, he pursued PhDs in Nutritional Sciences and Chemistry, hoping to use these skills to guarantee the strength of others. After he graduated in 2384, he sought out employment on a naval ship in the Traverse, and ended up employed as Head of Nutritional Affairs aboard the FSS Joolb. While not a soldier, he still benefited from minor implants to improve his hand-eye coordination and ambidexterity, encouraging him to always seek to better both himself and his work.

In 2413, like many other Skrell, Qlglinshi was fascinated with news of contact with Humans. For the past approximately thirty years, he had put his effort into determining ways to most efficiently provide optimal nutrition through the use of food pills, but he was becoming bored with the limited tastes of his crew. He knew that if he wanted to grow as an intellectual, he would need to challenge himself, and studying the needs of a completely alien species seemed the best way to do so. He vowed that, as soon as his current work contract finished, he'd find employment in a facility that would properly test his skills. In 2455, he left the FSS Joolb for human space, but paid respect to the discipline and techniques he developed aboard it by amending it to his surname. After brushing up on human culinary techniques at Cypress University in Mendell, he signed an employment contract with NanoTrasen in 2460 and found himself aboard the NSS Aurora as a Chef.

What do you like about this character? Qlglinshi is a very proud, perfectionist ex-navy chef. He's pretentious and challenge-seeking. I feel he presents fun opportunities for cook-offs, striving to create the most complex dishes to appease those who dare doubt his cooking abilites. I hope his style of cooking - namely through using food pills - will also provide for entertaining interactions with the crew.

Qlglinshi is also a bit too bold - He assumes he'll be able to handle interactions with completely alien cultures, and I feel it should be fun to see how he manages the culture clash he'll face aboard the Aurora. Despite his rough exterior, he also has a soft side - He's a huge chump for Skrellian sappy war-hero movies, and enjoys three dimensional water painting to relax.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? 6/10 - I think I'm able to make slightly 'out there' characters that are still fleshed out and can be believable people, but sometimes I have a hard time roleplaying certain situations (for example, PainRP, or extreme grief). Other times, if things become incredibly hectic, I can freeze up and not know quite how to respond to a situation. Lastly, I cannot roleplay romance, which is a weakness I'll always have. I've gotten over the basic pitfalls (super edgy characters and self inserts), but I still have a lot to improve on.

I'm giving Eli a definite +1, Eli has proven themselves to be a good roleplayer over the course of the last few months that they've been here, capable of playing a multitude of characters that are fun to interact with. They're very comfortable playing a supporting role on station- not stealing the spotlight from the rest of the crew in order to play hero, nor do they make characters who have so much going on that they become hard to relate to.

Eli also is someone who helps with expanding the lore simply by interacting with them. Eli ICly is a delight because they really do make SS13 feel like a sci-fi setting- they make the Aurora really feel like it's 400 years in the future. While Eli gave themself a 6/10 on roleplay ability, I'd personally say they're higher on that scale- while they might struggle with painRP or playing out extreme grief in their own words, their ability to improvise is top notch, and I've never seen them break character during my time playing alongside their characters.

TL;DR Eli is a good roleplayer and helps with server lore by her mere presence.

Strong +1

Elianabeth is a really, REALLY good RPer. They're extremely capable and very friendly, with excellent IC and OOC attitude. Not only do I trust them to uphold a species whitelist standards, but they would serve as an excellent role model OOCly.

The character concept is awesome! Super unique, with a distinct and believable personality, without being ridiculous. Got no doubt Qlglinshi will be a really fun addition to the crew, and that any future skrell characters will be just as good. Eliana puts a LOT of effort into what they do, and it shows. I have no doubt she put a good amount of time into this app and has really examined the lore before posting.

Overall, a really nice app; I don't have any other comments or criticisms to add. Hope to see you warbling soon, Eli.

I've only just recently started getting to know Eliana and her characters, and they're REALLY good at roleplay, and very very fun to interact with. I can't give much input when it comes to Skrell lore, but I'm almost certain she'd play one very well. Huge +1.

Hey there! I'm a lore deputy for skrell in charge of whitelists atm.

This is a solid application. You've shown a decent understanding of history with your character's backstory, as well as a strong grasp of the culture, and they seem like a pretty interesting person to see on the station. I'm a big fan of how you included the skrell's liberal use of augments in your character. I just have a few questions.

This is a character with a somewhat varied background. What job/s will they be taking up on the station?

At around 129, your skrell is a proper adult age. How do they deal with cultural pressures to attempt having and raising children? Did they undergo sterilization therapy, and if so, did it fail?

Feel free to answer these in any order you desire, elianabeth.

Thanks for the quick reply -

I was planning on playing him mainly as a chef, though given his qualification he could realistically play a chemist as well. I understand Skrell are capable of job-hopping, but his interests are more nutritional research focused than medicine, and I wouldn't see him enjoying drug production as much. I'll have to see how it goes in game.

Regarding sterilization - Since extensive treatments are required, he'd decided to only undergo it after finding a Quualt'Shriapt. However, Qlglinshi wasn't the most sociable on the Joolb, he's a workaholic and perfectionist, and formed plenty of Quualt'Yiilet-s, but not any actual romantic relationships. His closest chance of that was in university - but even then, he put his studies over his relationships. He's somewhat guilty as he knows he probably should work harder at ensuring there's a future lineage of Skrell, but allows his perfectionist desires to reign over his life.

Skrell are capable of jobhopping, yeah. Just remember to get permission from administration first.

Those are both sufficient answers to my questions. You leave me no choice but to accept this whitelist, and I look forward to seeing Qlglinshi! elianabeth
